Pop Culture• Similar to today, famous people in

the nineties got into trouble, which was broadcasted.

• The following tells a few of those stories that just so happened to all take place in 1993.– In LA, rapper Snoop Dog was

arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department in connection with a drive-by shooting.

– In Ohio, a woman claimed that the Beavis and Butthead carton caused their five-year-old son to set the fire that torched their trailer park home and killed his two-year-old sister.

– The LAPD was also investigating allegations that Michael Jackson molested a twelve-year-old boy.

Headlines• National:• The 41st president of

the United States of America was elected. George Herbert Walker Bush was elected over Ronald Reagan.

• He was inaugurated on January 20th, 1989.

• He entered office at a period of change in the world; the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Clinton was elected 42nd president of the United States of America November 3rd, 1992.

• Bill Clinton ran against Republican candidate, George H. W. Bush, and third party candidate, Ross Perot.

• Clinton won with forty-seven percent of America’s vote, leaving Bush with thirty-seven point four percent, and Perot with eighteen point nine percent.

• In the past, people focused of a car design had style and speed, but in the 1990’s consumers were more interested in a car of safety and quality.

Transportation• In the beginning of

the decade, Chrysler, General Motors (GM), and ford were the main automakers.

• By the end of the decade, the Ford F-series pick-up was the best-selling American vehicle, followed by the Chevrolet C-series.

Communication• “Hundreds of

communications satellites circled the earth performing tasks undreamed of a generation before.”

• Palmtop computers allowed users to send faxes, page people, and check e-mail from wherever they were.

• Communication combined with technology transformed the world.

– In 1997, researchers in Edinburgh, Scotland created a lamb named Dolly, from a single cell of an adult sheep. They called this practice cloning.

– By 1998, more than 45 million people were wired into the World Wide Web.

Sports News• Major League Baseball:

– “Between 1984 and 1994, baseball had grown from a $600 million business to an industry worth almost $2 billion.”

• NFL:– In the 90’s there were a host

of football teams who won the Super Bowl.

– Though Barry Sanders never won any Super Bowls in the 90’s, he always managed to attract fans to his games. He was one of the most talented and electrifying players in the game.

Sports News• NBA:

– During the 90’s, the Chicago Bulls won six of the ten NBA titles of the decade.

– They were lead by the great, Michael Jordan.

• Boxing:– “In this decade,

boxing was something spectacular, not only because it had great fighters, but because it had Mike Tyson coming out of the 80’s with an undefeated record.”

Changing Roles of Individuals and Families

of the 90’s• More females had jobs and

were supported by R&B groups such as TLC and Destiny’s Child.

• The new “in” or “fad” was being independent and not needing a man to take care of the bills.

• Economically the United States was on the rise with the Dow Jones reaching record highs.

• Oil and gas were discovered in many countries, leading to economic growth and wider adoption of trade between nations.
