James Ainslie President & CEO CAPE AUGUSTA

Tell us about your last new project or expansion.

Cape Augusta is a US founded business seeking to develop a diverse and robust portfolio of technology investments in the information technology sector. Within this sector Cape Augusta seeks to focus on the following:

• Data Center Development. Cape Augusta’s recently formed Cape Augusta Digital Properties; a wholesale data center development company, seeks to develop a fleet of high quality (Tier 3) regional scale data centers across the US. Its ambition is to develop at least 20 facilities in the next 5 years.

• Cyber Security and • Cyber Human Capital Development.

Cape Augusta is currently focused on Augusta Cyberworks, the first of its developments, an ambitious high tech campus in Augusta, Georgia, that will include:

• Two 10 megawatt data centers.

• 1 million square feet (100,000 square meters) of proposed class-A office space to service department of defense subcontractors and federal tenants that service nearby Fort Gordon, the new headquarters for US Army Cyber Command, destined to become operational in 2019.

What is your cloud strategy?

As a wholesale DC development company our strategy is to support scale cloud environments with quality cost effective inventory. By combining low cost power infrastructure, data center friendly tax credits and efficient design it is possible to supply a tier 3 product at super wholesale rates ($80-$90 per kilowatt per month) to hyperscale operators hungry for expansion. This translates into an efficiency to market of in excess of $1mm per MW / year on a full service lease basis.

What are the key site selection criteria that you use?

• Scale utility and data proximity.

• Significant fallow industrial scale real estate parcels.

• Proximity to water

• Availability of Tax Credits and Abatement Programs.

How are you competing against the web services giants?

We are not. They are prospective clients.

How are you differentiating your client-facing products?

• Quality of infrastructure.

• Efficiency and scalability of our design.

• Flexibility of off-take.

• Price.

Jim Poole Vice President, Ecosystem Development EQUINIX

Tell us about your last new project or expansion.

Project: we just launched our DCIM (data center infrastructure management). Expansion: our “major” activities here were the acquisition of Telecity in EMEA and BitIsle in Japan.

What is your cloud strategy?

Cloud strategy: we have a 3 pronged approach: a) to be the primary gateway to the Cloud, in terms of hosting the gateways to the hyperscalers and having the largest collection of CSPs in the market; b) offer the easiest access to the Cloud, through our products Equinix Cloud Exchange (which allows near instantaneous connectivity to multiple CSPs on a single port), Performance Hub (enterprise hubs for connectivity to the Cloud), and Data Hub (environments for hybrid/multi-cloud deployments adjacent to the Cloud); and c) simplifying enterprise adoption to the Cloud (in part through a and b) by building the broadest partner ecosystem of SI, MSPs to help Enterprises with the transition to the Cloud.

What are the key site selection criteria that you use?

Site selection: we focus on Tier1 global markets with low-latency access to large population/GDP centers.

How are you competing against the web services giants?

Competing w/giants: we don’t, we help them. The hyperscalers build DC’s for themselves, not end-users. We serve as the gateway to the hyperscalers as well as providing the environment where more sophisticated enterprises build adjacent infrastructure in order to achieve high availability, throughput, security and low-latency for their hybrid deployments.

How are you differentiating your client-facing products?

Differentiating Products: We’ve been innovating our products to be more “enterprise friendly”. The MTDC market has historically been one dominated by service providers who know how to operationalize a 3rd party DC. Enterprise’s require more hand-holding and packaging of services in order to use the DC. As such, we’ve rolled out a number of new products: Cloud Exchange, Performance Hub, Data Hub, DCIM and a professional services function.

What have you found to be the newest revenue contributor to your business?

New Revenue Contributor: the Enterprise has quickly become our fastest growing collection of customers in terms of new logos to the Company.
