#captainsputter About the Captain’s Putter Matches

The winning team is presented the Captain’s Putter trophy

The competition began in 1955, a few years after the Ryder Cup was held at Pinehurst Resort in 1951. With then CGA Executive Director P.J. Boatwright operating the association out of Pinehurst, no doubt the Ryder Cup had at least some motivation in creating the event. From 1955 to 1963, two matches were played each year, one at Pinehurst Country Club and another on the Cascades Course at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. The matches were streamlined to once a year beginning in 1964 and venues were changed every year, alternating between the Virginias one year and then to the Carolinas the next. The matches were renamed the “Captain’s Putter” in 2010. The individual records contained in these pages were compiled since 1966 due to the fact that results from previous years were unavailable. The first day of competition is four-ball and foursomes, and the second day is individual match play. There are 16 “regular” roster members for each side and eight seniors.

#captainsputter Match Notes

Recent years… Last year’s Captain’s Putter matches produced a close final result as the Virginias team notched a one-point victory (24½-23½) at The Club at Creighton Farms in Aldie, VA. Virginias retained the Captain’s Putter Trophy awarded to the champions and captured its fourth straight victory in the matches, a first in the history of the event for Virginias. Team Virginias, owner of a one-point advantage following the first day, kept that narrow lead after the two teams split day two’s 24 singles’ encounters, 12-12 to claim the one point win. Over the two days of matches, Virginias’ regulars outscored their opponents by four points (18-14), while Carolinas’ seniors held a three-point advantage (9½-6½). The one-point margin of victory was the closest since the event went to a one-point per match format in 2002. Perfection… Twelve players on this year’s Virginias team have won all possible points in a year, compared to just five for the Carolinas. For the Virginias (# of years): Ben Beach, Pat Carter, Matt Chandler, Keith Decker (2), Jon Hurst, Vincent Nadeau, Sam O’Dell, David Partridge, Dave Pulk, Scott Shingler, Jordan Utley, and Justin Young. For the Carolinas (# of years): Sherrill Britt, Rick Cloninger, Greg Earnhardt, Jim Grainger, Scott Harvey (2), Paul Simson (5), and Walter Todd, Sr. U.S. Four-Ball… Seven players competing in this year’s match qualified for the inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, held in May at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, California. From the Carolinas: Sherrill Britt and Greg Earnhardt finished as runner-up; Scott Harvey teamed with Todd Mitchell of Illinois and lost in the semifinals to Britt-Earnhardt; Steve Harwell and his partner lost in the round of 32. From the Virginias: Keith Decker and Jon Hurst teamed up, missing the match play cut to low 32 teams; Jimmy Delp and his partner also missed the match play cut. Top Point Earners… Each roster for this year’s match boasts three of the top-5 all-time points earners. From the Carolinas: Paul Simson (#1), Scott Harvey (T-3), and Walter Todd, Sr. (5). From the Virginias: Keith Decker (#1), Pat Carter (T-3), and David Partridge (5). Most years played … This year is Keith Decker’s 31st appearance in the Captain’s Putter Matches, tying him with Vinny Giles for the most all-time. Paul Simson’s next appearance will tie Larry Boswell for most all-time on the Carolinas team (27). Junior team matches… The Virginias junior team won the Vinny Giles Trophy this summer defeating the Carolinas team by a score of 9.5 to 6.5 at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, VA. The victory snapped Carolinas four consecutive win streak—their longest win streak since the first four years of the matches (1983-86). Carolinas leads the all-time series, 18-15. A new beginning… The 2002 meeting was the beginning for two important streaks. First, it marked the genesis of a new scoring format in which the teams only get one point per match. Prior to 2002, the format was based on a Nassau format in which teams fought for two points on the front, back and overall 18 holes, for a total of six points per match. Second, that year was also the start of a Virginias’ three-year winning streak. The Virginias own an 8-5-0 lead since 2002. Host notes… The matches are returning to Old Town Club for the first time since 2007, when the Carolinas team dominated the Virginias 32-16. That year Paul Simson went undefeated, winning each of his three matches for the Carolinas team. Old Town Club, home of Wake Forest University Golf, was designed by famed architect Perry Maxwell. It has a unique double green that is shared by two holes approaching from different directions. Hole 17, a 585-yard par-5, shares the green with the par-4,382-yard 8th hole. The renovations done in 2013 by Coore and Crenshaw have received such accolades that Old Town ranks No. 78 in Golf Magazine’s current “Top 100 Golf Courses in the United States.”
