    short -a- in and, as, aftershort -e- in pen, hen, lend

    short -i- in it, in short -o- in top, hop short -u- in under, cup

    The 6 Long Vowel Sounds

    sounds. (The C sound is found in the k sounds

    found in ks words like kicks.)

    Take, for example, the difference between "hard c"(as in cat) and "soft c" (as incell). After collectingmany words containing the letter "c," studentsdiscover that "c" is usually hard when followed byconsonants (as in clue and crayon) and the vowels

    "a," "o," and "u" (as in cat, cot, and cut). Incontrast, "c" is usually soft when followed by "i", "e,"and "y" (as in circus, celery, and cycle).

    Of course, for every rule there are exceptions thatthreaten the rule. Students learn, though, thatspelling patterns exist and that these patterns helpto explain how to spell, read, and write words.

    Word study is also designed to build word knowledgethat can be applied to both reading and spelling(Henderson, 1992; Zutell, 1998). Because it isclosely tied to reading instruction, it also developsstudents' abilities in phonics, word recognition, andvocabulary (Baker, 2000).
