With a production and marketing budget somewhere in the neighborhood of $450 million, Captain America: Civil War was expensive to produce, but the movie has justified its cost with strong earnings and a favorable audience reception that should be a boon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Looking at production and marketing cost relative to ticket sales, Deadpool stands a very good chance of remaining the year's biggest hit.

While Deadpool can be counted as an unqualified success, X-Men: Apocalypse is on track to do roughly $200 million less at the box office than its immediate predecessor and Independence Day: Resurgence is a flop.

With breakout hits Zootopia and The Jungle Book making up for a big disappointment with Alice Through the Looking Glass, and strong performance from Civil War and Finding Dory, Disney is on pace for a record year at the box office.

Disney films did roughly $1 billion in domestic ticket sales in all of 2015. Through the first half of 2016, and counting sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, domestic sales for the company's movies reached nearly $1.8 billion.
