Overview
The 3rd International Conference on GCED : Platform on Pedagogy and Practice
05
In recognition of the prominent role of education in addressing interconnected global challenges, Global
Citizenship Education (GCED) has emerged as one of the global goals to be achieved by 2030 as inscribed in
the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This Conference, therefore, aims to serve as a prime platform
to promote conversations on GCED, share current issues and good practices, as well as explore future steps in
the area of GCED, along with diverse participants from around the world.
The Conference, which is held annually in September, provides an excellent opportunity for participants to
deeply immerse themselves in GCED for two full days. A multiplicity of views and perspectives are shared,
and a variety of practical, hands-on experiences are offered in an atmosphere of mutual support and respect.
Including many different formats to cater to a diverse audience, the Conference aims to inspire each and every
participant to learn from fellow participants and act on their own initiative to make GCED root down firmly at
the local level.
The 3rd Conference will bring together those who have been at the forefront of GCED from all corners of
the world. Under the overarching theme of ‘GCED in Every Corner of the World: Local-Contextualization of
GCED’, the Conference intends to touch upon how GCED has been and/or can be perceived and implemented
differently based on the local, national and regional contexts. The Conference will explore and share regional,
national, local and traditional concepts which address same or similar values to those that are at the core of
GCED. Furthermore, this platform for intensive exchanges of practices and ideas will facilitate the dialogue on
diverse roles of GCED playing with different emphases depending on the contexts of societies.

Description The role of GCED reflecting the local contextsThe Conference will start by a keynote speech, addressing the role of GCED and its local contextualization. When it comes to the vision of global citizenship, he emphasizes that in the global community, it is crucial to have a sense of belonging to pursue universal values. In this sense, ‘learning to live together’ under a consensus of mutual understanding is necessary, thus GCED. Plenary Session 1GCED in the context of the Korean Peninsula-its contribution to peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts
Time & Date 10:50-12:20, 5 September 2018 (Wed)
Venue Crystal Ballroom (2F)
Session Organizers UNESCO, APCEIU, Korean National Commission for UNESCO
Description With a group of experts, plenary session 1 explores ‘learning to live together’, the main principle for peacebuilding and reconciliation and how to apply this principle in the Korean context. Obviously, GCED is rooted in this principle. For effective implementation, however, the principle needs to be contextualized. In this case, the specific political and historical contexts of the Korean peninsula must be taken into consideration. The existing educational efforts in place in the Republic of Korea to promote a culture of peace between all Korean peoples would also need to be reviewed, would also need to be reviewed, to consolidate efforts and develop coherent policies for maximum synergies
