The 3rd BCS CMSG Conference & Exhibition 2007 | Life Cycle Management across the Supply Chain: the role of Configuration and Change Management.

The BCS Configuration Management Specialist Group are pleased to invite you to the third BCS CMSG Conference for managers, practitioners and specialists working in change, release and configuration management. This year our programme will focus on life-cycle management across the supply chain, and the vital role of configuration and change management in that process.

Enforcing mandatory process steps, meeting auditing and compliance goals, ensuring proper approvals, and communicating and managing change globally across distributed teams and supply chains. These are all challenges that organisations face as they seek to deliver higher levels of quality for their services, systems and products.

Industry analysts like Gartner, IDC, Forrester, Ovum and Meta Group have all predicted a surge in the implementation and need for comprehensive life cycle management, change management and SCM tools for enterprises around the world of whatever size. With the regulatory compliance needs driven by such as Sarbanes-Oxley, CMMI and 21 CFR Part 11 and the desire to keep up with internal quality goals and objectives, Configuration Management and Change Management are becoming increasingly important. With presentations by practitioners and world leaders in the field, we have an exciting agenda aimed at encouraging the cross fertilisation of change, configuration management and release management best practices throughout the life cycle and across the supply chain. We invite newcomers as well as old hands to Conference to share their experiences of life cycle management, and the lessons they have learned.

The event has been planned to encourage a high degree of peer-to-peer interaction and discussions in both formal and informal situations. This will be a chance to renew old acquaintances and interact with those who have real experience in the field. As delegates from previous conferences have noted, the informal networking is hugely valuable.

The exhibition running alongside the Conference is an excellent opportunity for delegates to find out about new product developments and raise questions about using new technologies.

levels are available, the value of international certifi cations, and how certifi cations can be achieved.

Track 1 Day 2, 16 May

Release Management - The Political ProcessDon Page, Marval SoftwareThis interactive workshop uses Marval’s experiences and the problems encountered during their ISO/IEC 20000 accreditation, which caused them to re-think their approach to release. It will specifi cally go through Marval’s step-by-step, practical approach; from planning to deployment, involving the Applications Team to the Service Desk.

Confi guration Management of ServicesCathy Wright, Head of Confi guration and Asset Management, BT The paper will cover BT's approach to mapping Services from an end to end view back down into the infrastructure. It will also cover the benefi ts of recording and maintaining this information to the business and to the other ITSM process areas and detail the challenges BT overcame to reach their current position.

Points of View: "Where are CM systems and tools going and where should they be going?”Marc Girod, IONA Technologies. Keith Allen, CAThis session will allow some challenging and thought provoking points of view to be expressed, as input for the open debate.

ITIL and the CMDB – What’s Next for Service ManagementKen Turbitt, Global Best Practices Director, BMC SoftwareWhat if you are part of an organization that has already successfully implemented a confi guration management database (CMDB), the heart of ITIL - what happens next? Ken answers that question in this presentation with the Gartner Hype Cycle for IT Operations Management.

Open Debate: "Where are CM systems and tools going and where should they be going?"Chair Michael KennedyDebate on the ideas raised in Points of View session, and items from the fl oor. Vendor speakers will be invited to take part.

Application Change from Cradle to Production. Keith Allen, CAThis paper walks through a CMMI approach in managing any application change request from initial request through to deployment to a production environment, together with the associated best practices required for an organisation to meet SOX and compliance audits.

Using SCM to Align Software Development Process with Business NeedsTony Smith, European Technical Services Manager, Perforce SoftwareSoftware Development is no longer a small-team process: modern software development organizations are routinely distributed across continents and time zones, but rather than embracing global developments many organizations still try to manage it as a series of local developments. By continually aligning the SCM processes with the business processes,

organizations can turn the corner and gain a competitive advantage.

Global Develop & Deploy: The Politics, Patterns and Process of Implementing Distributed Software Confi guration Management.Kevin A Lee, IBM Software GroupIn order for businesses to continue to leverage the benefi ts of a "fl at" world and globalised economy, the implementation of distributed confi guration, change and release management processes across an enterprise is key. Successful implementation of these processes should not simply concentrate on technical infrastructure, but rather on the people involved, their culture and the decisions and trade-offs that they have to make.

Track 2, Day 2, 16 May

Do It Right the First Time All the Time - Building and Deploying Software Releases using Process Centric SCM tools. Sarathi Srinivasan, Spectrum Software Inc.Wherever there is a desire for quality, everyone is aware of the Quality Doctrine “Do It Right The First Time”. With global outsourcing, process centric Source Confi guration and Management (SCM) has gained a lot of importance and has caught the attention of many CTOs and CIOs. This presentation will focus on the power and benefi ts of a Process-Centric SCM system as the gatekeeper and enforcer of the build and deployment process of your application or product.

Herding Baselines into Service – A Confi guration Management Improvement Journey Robert Cowham, VaccapernaThis presentation will describe a case study with many projects delivering into service across many different technologies from PC to mainframe, and the confi guration management improvement project which initially focused on managing baselines across the organization.

The Convergence of ITSM and ALMRyan Lloyd, MKS IncApplication Development and IT Operations teams are often managed in silos, with very little collaboration. This paper will outline the current state of the IT Service Management and Application Lifecycle Management markets and discuss the growing trend in consolidation that will enable organizations to take better advantage of all IT resources, assisting in planning / forecasting as well as capturing meaningful metrics that are pertinent to the most senior IT executives.

Track 3, Day 1, 15 May

Getting Started with ITIL: Survival Guide to Improved IT ProcessesChris White, Director International Sales Engineer, AldonAdherence to process guidelines is essential for organizations to survive and grow which is why ITIL has taken the tech world by storm. The question on the minds of many IT managers and developers is “Where do I get started?”

Using a CM Tool for Asset/Inventory ManagementPeter McLoughlin, Confi guration Patterns LimitedThis presentation explores the use of a

sophisticated Confi guration Management Tool to capture Information for Inventory/Asset Management. The presentation deals with the increasingly ambitious aims of using a tool which was itself becoming more sophisticated. It covers 3 different implementations over a period of years.

Release Management WorkshopJohn Metcalfe, Mentor IT This interactive workshop will allow participants to work through a scenario and draw appropriate lessons around the theme of release management.

Workshop Session – Show me the Money and Value!David Cuthbertson, Square Mile SystemsWorkshops: “Increasing the Value and Use of ITIL CMDB" and “Show me the money!”Justifying the fi nancial value of confi guration management is diffi cult when you try and put forward a business case. Building on a previous BCS-CMSG event this workshop should be both enlightening and fun for those involved. If you have a CMDB already, how can you get it used by technical and service teams as part of their everyday processes? In his presentation, David will show techniques and examples of using existing CI data to help improve change, release, incident, problem and business continuity processes.

Track 3, Day 2, 16 May

CMDB: Fast-Track to the Benefi ts in a Lo-Tech SituationJohn Carey Bennett, Strategic IM systems LtdA company needed to be compliant with Security Audit to ISO 27001:2005 standards; a failure to achieve the standard threatened a small business. This paper describes the introduction of continuous improvement despite cultural barriers, undocumented processes and a virtual asset list.

Variant Management Dr. Danilo Beuche, pure-systems GmbH, Mark Dalgarno, Software Acumen Limited Related products frequently share much of the same software, with only a few differences realizing product-specifi c functionality. Much of the challenge of developing related products comes from managing these differences.Variant Management is emerging as a best-practice approach to managing portfolios of related products (Product Lines) across the life cycle.

Freeride development: Continuous versus Controlled IntegrationPablo Luaces, Codice SoftwareSince agile methods went public around 2000, continuous integration techniques have been key to implement development processes worldwide. But, is continuous integration, as we know it today, the last step in the release management evolution? Obviously not.

Using well-known branching patterns and a combination of free and commercial software tools, alternative ways to traditional continuous integration will be introduced, creating a more controlled but still agile build management procedure.
