PACKAGING

• Is the art, science & technology of enclosing, containing and protecting products for distribution, storage, sale and use. It can also be defined as a process of design, evaluation and production of packages/packed products.• Packaging is a complex dynamic, scientific, artistic

and sometimes controversial business function. • Packaging is a service function that cannot exist by

itself , it needs a product . If there is no product, there is no need for packaging

PACKAGING

• Packaging also consists of marketing functions e.g. communication, display ,information, promotion, sale and motivation. • Packaging can be defined as the activity of

temporarily integrating an external function and a product to enable the use of the product. • It is important to note the difference between

PACKAGING as defined and PACKING (the enclosing of individual/several items in a container for shipping or delivery).

FOOD

• Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is organic in nature ,usually of plant or animal origin. Food contains essential nutrients such as Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, Vitamins and Minerals.• Foods when ingested and assimilated by organisms

including human beings, produce energy to maintain life and stimulate growth.• In essence human beings cannot survive without

food.

• Raw/fresh food• Locally consumable food- This can be ready to eat

foods like cooked food or processed food for local markets • Bulk and semi processed food- This category can be

pre-processed in the farm for ease of packaging for export to urban areas e,g cassava, yam, cocoa etc • Food prepared for export

FOOD INDUSTRY

• The Food Industry consists of :• The production of goods from raw materials especially

in factories • The people and activities involved in providing a

particular service. • The development of the food industry is determined

by the economic development of the country and the growing demand of the agricultural and industrial sectors.

FOOD INDUSTRY

In particular the development of non oil exports and the

increased penetration of

Nigerian products on the regional and

international markets depend heavily on the

performance of the food sector and its

compliance with the rules and

regulations in import markets.

WHY IS PACKAGING THE HEARTBEAT OF THE MODERN FOOD INDUSTRY?

Containment The containment function of packaging is obvious

yet it is overlooked by many. It is the basic function of packaging.

With the exception of large discrete products, all other products must be contained before they can be moved from one place to another.

The containment function makes a huge contribution to protecting the environment .

Faulty packaging (or under-packaging) can result to the pollution of the environment.

Page 24: THE 39 TH CONFERENCE AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF NIGERIAN INSTITUTE OF FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 13 TH – 16 TH OCTOBER, 2015 THEME: FOOD PROCESS INDUSTRIALIZATION

WHY IS PACKAGING THE HEARTBEAT OF THE MODERN FOOD INDUSTRY?

Protection and Preservation The primary function of packaging is protection and

preservation. Without packaging, the food industry can hardly

exist. Protection guides against damage. Preservation determines the shelf life of products. The shelf life of products is a function of many

things such as quality of raw materials, processing conditions, handling and of course type of packaging.

WHY IS PACKAGING THE HEARTBEAT OF THE MODERN FOOD INDUSTRY?

Shelf Life Elongation Packaging enables food products to stay viable much longer than their natural biological life.Implications of this are:- Reduction in post– harvest food waste Hunger is reduced. Healthy living is assured. Wealth is created.

WHY PACKAGING IS THE HEARTBEAT OF THE MODERN FOOD INDUSTRY?

Proper packaging, storage and transport techniques enables us to deliver fresh tomatoes, apples or products derived from them throughout the year and throughout the country. These products are available anywhere and anytime.

This gives the society freedom, choice and mobility. Since we are not tied to the food-producing ability

of an area, food production becomes more specialized and efficient with the growth of packaging.

WHY IS PACKAGING THE HEARTBEAT OF THE MODERN FOOD INDUSTRY?

Without packaging, International trade in consumer goods success of this will be very limited without packaging. Processed and unprocessed foods can hardly survive beyond one week without adequate packaging. Therefore, shipping and distribution of foods across nations (basis of International trade ) would have been impossible without packaging.

Page 28: THE 39 TH CONFERENCE AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF NIGERIAN INSTITUTE OF FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 13 TH – 16 TH OCTOBER, 2015 THEME: FOOD PROCESS INDUSTRIALIZATION

WHY IS PACKAGING THE HEARTBEAT OF THE MODERN FOOD INDUSTRY?

Another importance of packaging is the freedom from the natural cycles of feast and famine that are typical of societies dependent on natural regional food –producing cycles.

Central processing allows value recovery from what would have normally be wasted.

By –products of the processed –food industry form the basis of the other sub industries. e.g. waste recovery plant and Poultry feed plant.

WHY IS PACKAGING THE HEARTBEAT OF THE MODERN FOOD INDUSTRY?

The economical manufacture of food depends on good packaging .

A product ‘s cost is directly related to production volume . A factory producing thousands of food packs per year for local sale cannot make food as cheaply as millions – units plant producer.

Sound packaging is key to efficient distribution in this case.

Some food industries cannot exist without an International market.

WHY IS PACKAGING THE HEARTBEAT OF THE MODERN FOOD INDUSTRY?

Information Dissemination Through Packaging All product information, both statutory and non-

statutory is only possible through packaging. All food advertisement and promotional activities will

not fly without packaging. The new trend retail activities (supermarkets) will be

impossible without the help of packaging. Packaging is indeed the silent sales man.

WHY IS PACKAGING THE HEARTBEAT OF THE MODERN FOOD INDUSTRY?

Convenience Foods In the advanced countries of the world, people have

more money than the time . The need to save time led to the development of “convenience foods”.

Conventional ovens , microwaves ovens , eat-on- go, one portion packs are all manifestations of convenience foods.

Easy to use, easy opening , re-closure and storage features on packages are similar examples.

Usually the consumer is willing to pay a little more if the convenience feature guarantees time and energy savings.

WHY IS PACKAGING THE HEARTBEAT OF THE MODERN FOOD INDUSTRY?

Employment Creation The need for survival and the compatibility of

food and packaging lend itself to creation of employment through production of food.

Many Food entrepreneurs will not be able to function without sound packaging.

The need for other stake holders like Engineers , printers , marketers etc participation in food industry makes food packaging a fan of most people.
