HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

There is one representative for every several hundred thousand

people in that state.

Only this house can introduce spending bills.

To be a Representative a person must be at least 25 years old, a

U.S. citizen for at least 7 years, and when elected, must be an

inhabitant of that state in which he or she shall be chosen.

The House of Representatives was established as a result of the

Great Compromise. The House is larger than the Senate.

There were 59 members at the first session of the House of

Representatives. Today there are 435 members. Representatives are

elected to serve for a period of 2 years.

THE SENATE

Our country's legislative branch, or Congress, includes

another lawmaking body called the Senate. Voters elect two

senators from each state, regardless of population size.

To be a senator a person must be at least 30 years old, a U.S.

citizen for at least 9 years, and have fulfilled the requirements

for residency in the state that person wishes to represent.

Only the Senate can approve or reject treaties and

presidential nominations for government offices.

WHY WE NEED A GOVERNMENT

There are many reasons why we need a stable government. For one

without a proper government we would have no order and there would be

chaos. Everyone wouldn’t know what to do and either people’s rights

would be provoked or they would claim they had he power to do anything

they wanted.

The three branches are vital to America because without them how would

go on with life. The Judicial Branch makes it possible for court cases to be

settled. The Executive Branch enforces laws and controls what we spend.

The Legislative Branch makes laws and makes new bills. Without the

government the U.S. would have an extremely hard time dealing with life.
