Sisters and Brothers,

I just turned fifty.

Fifty is hard to believe. It seems impossible. I don’t even re-member my 30s anymore—did I skip some years? I admit having mixed feelings about growing older, but I refuse to complain of it. Fifty years of life is a gift not everyone re-ceives. Besides, life has its seasons, and seasons change.

Finally, the Kentucky winter is turning into spring. I love watching the change, especially as new leaves first begin to return to the bare limbs of trees. In a matter of days, the leaves will be green; but at first, the tender buds aren’t green at all. Look closely—they are gold. It’s a majestic transfor-mation that Robert Frost observed in one of his poems:

Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.

It’s a poem about change—how the gold of springtime yields to the green of summer, dawn turns into day. With each transition there seems to be a loss, a sinking away from para-disiacal perfection; but what Frost reveals is that, in every case, what was temporary or partial gives way to something more lasting, more full. The golden days of spring sparkle with beauty, but the green days of summer are beautiful as well (and longer lasting).

Seasons change, God knows, and the seasons of life change. It’s tempting to cling to the gold, the seeming paradise of younger years; but nothing gold can stay. Inevitably, youth goes down to age, just as spring gives way to summer, and summer to autumn. The key is not to grieve long the season passing but to look for the new beauty of the season break-ing in. With loss along the way comes gain, and what you gain is a blessed increase of years, a larger life.

In other words, life itself reflects the paradox of the gospel: loss is gain, weakness is strength, to die is to live. “I die every day,” Paul says, letting go of all the things that can never last in order to take hold of all the things that can never pass away. Turning 50, I’m learning how important it is to give up my own life—don’t cling to it as precious—and to seek the eternal life that comes in Christ.

Becoming a Disciple Maker

The Men’s Fire Team I am a part of is currently going through the book, Becoming A Disciple Maker by Billy Hanks and Randy Craig. The book is actually a small group course to train you to disciple a new Christian one-on-one. It has been a challenging study. Being a disciple is simply reading God’s Word and obeying what you read. The learned skills of lis-tening, reading, studying, memorizing and meditating on God’s Word are just tools to help us apply it to our lives and to be obedient to what we are learning. Discipleship requires us to die to self and have a desire to follow Christ. It is not an easy journey but is one that lasts a lifetime. I am learning a lot. It reminds me what Jesus said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.” I am learning that I must die to self each day in order to follow Christ. It is a constant reminder that each day we must repeat the process but also that each day brings a new opportunity to try again. The goal of our discipleship is to be like Christ but also to pass it on to others. We are accountable to those around us to help them either begin or move closer to God in their discipleship jour-ney. I am thankful for the men on my Fire Team who are with me on this journey and for what they are teaching me from their life experiences. This Easter season is a great re-minder of all that Christ did for us at Calvary and should mo-tivate us to renew our efforts to be like Him.

That’s why I have to be intentional. Our elementary friends

will be learning about peace and conflict. I don’t know a fam-

ily without conflict and who doesn't desire peace. Peace

comes from putting our trust in God, and how can we do

that without a personal relationship with Him? I’ll be praying

that our families find ways to connect this month and take

just one step closer to building stronger relationships with

God and each other. It doesn't take any grand gestures but

choosing to make the most of the time that you have togeth-

er. Pray for me too, that I would choose to use out family

times together wisely and let God use me to influence my

next generation at home.

In March I filled in for one of our preschool leaders during large group time. I haven’t really been part of their large group experience, and I was excited about seeing our little ones and helping them learn. As the students came into the room excited to sing and learn, one little boy came running over to me, grabbed my leg, and wouldn’t let go. When I tried to pull back a little to crouch down and talk to him he started to cry almost and held on tighter. It was my son, James. I became slightly embarrassed at his behavior and a little frustrated with him as well. I kept thinking, “I’ve got a job to do this morning. Why is he behaving this way? What am I supposed to do?”

Later that evening we were using the Parent Cue app on my phone for our bedtime routine. Once a week we replace our bedtime devotional with watching the story that he learned in small group on Sunday morning. Afterwards I was looking through the articles for parents and came across one called “Because, One Day, Your Kids Stop Bugging You (Really).” As I read it my eyes swelled up with tears. This is just a phase. Many of you have lovingly looked at me and reminded me of that, but I guess God knows just how much I need to be re-minded.

As I continued to read I just kept realizing that even though this whole parenting thing is hard right now – it doesn’t nec-essarily get easier. The “hard” just changes which is why so much of what I do now with the time I have James and Rory matters. They are lovingly taught and presented with God’s word each time they are here at church, but what we talk about and how Matt & I interact with them at home can either reinforce or tear down the efforts of our leaders. If I want James and Rory to have an authentic faith of their own, I have to be that daily example for them now – not just tell them to love God, but show them what unconditional love looks like. I can’t help them understand that God will always listen to them if I don’t take the time to stop and listen to them. Because to them, what they want to talk about really matters. And later when the things that really matter need to be talked about I want them to still want to talk to me.

During April our preschoolers will learn more about why

Jesus wants to be their friend forever and that they need to

share that with others too. I know I’ve had friends to come

and go in my life, but Jesus has been a constant friend. My

desire is that my kids will grow to love Jesus and choose to

have Him be their forever friend, but how will they know

that to be true if I don’t show them or talk about it with

them?

Peaceful Waters Competition

Sunday Morning Grades 1 – 6 will be collecting bottled wa-ter for Hotel Inc.’s Street Team to distribute as they work.

Two students from the group with the most water collect-ed during the month of April will get to do a messy act at the next Sunday Night Live.

The collection will take place April 5th – April 26th. Groups will store the bottled water in their designated meeting areas.

Lives Changed,

I could make music in lots of places. As a sophomore in high school I thought I might be in the Army band,

hopefully as a tuba player and then as the band direc-tor. As a junior I wondered if I’d be a high school

band director. As a senior, a choir director for the

school where I grew up.

While in college, God made it very clear to me that what had previously been “in the back of my mind I

want to be a music minister” was actually a very spe-

cific calling on my life. I knew, as a freshman at Georgetown College, that I was called by a very per-

sonal God to do ministry.

But it really wasn’t until the last few years that I have begun to grasp what is so very different about making

music and making music in church.

Well sure, I’ve been talking for decades about the

difference in singing and worshiping, about making music for people versus making music for God. But

what I’ve become increasingly compelled by is music

for life change.

I talk about it often with those in the worship minis-try. We pray before services that God would use our

meager attempts at lifting Him up through music to draw people to Jesus—where their lives can change

forever.

Before the choir shared The Story Easter musical, we

got on our knees and begged God to change the tra-jectory of the lives of people who would attend.

In my personal prayer time I keep a long list of re-quests people have shared with me. I sometimes fall

to my knees in my office and cry out to God to change lives.

Maybe that’s why I take so gladly the burden of choos-

ing the right song for the right service and the right sermon. I have seen it happen. I’ve seen it here…

A young man first came as a guest. Now he tells

me that God has radically changed the direction of his life, maybe even his vocation, because of the worship

ministry.

A young lady visits with her mother, a lovely lady

who had been treated poorly by a different church. The

music connected so deeply with her that I couldn’t help but pray for her—even as I was leading “Amazing

Grace: My Chains Are Gone.”

A great grandmother stretches her arms to heaven

in the services and afterwards talks about how she

hasn’t worshipped like that since she was a little girl, and about how it sustains her in the daily battle for her

health.

Lives changed. It’s why I live this stuff. I eat, sleep, dream, and talk about ways we can leverage the pow-

erful gift God gave us—worship music—to change lives.

If you’d like to be part of a ministry compelled like that,

please let me know. I’m always looking for vocalists,

instrumentalists, and especially sound and screens and video artists. I will shepherd you, teach you everything

I know—which is not nearly enough, and love you.

And together, maybe we can see lives changed.

Even, by the grace of God, our own.

What’s NEWS with our

It has been an exciting March. DNOW was a huge suc-cess. We had over 80 teens, 20 college students, and dozens of other leaders from Woodburn participate. We had a good number of students make decisions for Christ and many deepened their relationship with God. We served in 10 different venues on Saturday after-noon all over Warren County in our service projects. We were led in worship by John Nix and the Exodus band from Liberty University. Teens had the chance to be taught by incredible leaders in the elective sessions. We ate 400-500 pancakes on Friday night. It was fun, exciting, and life changing.

One element that I am always encouraged by was the college students and adults, who love Jesus and are living their lives for His glory, that led each student small group. It is an amazing sight to see how the stu-dents respond to our amazing college students. They show our students how the next stage of life can be lived. From here, we build on the momentum. I will spend the next few weeks following up with students who made decisions and see the direction that we need to go in youth, based on what God has done. I also want to make the turn toward the summer. We will have a few events leading up to the summer to solidify our small group ministry and focus on the pur-pose of God for our student’s summer. I am making plans for some kind of in state or regional missions endeavor this summer. More information will be forth-coming. Thank you for praying for the ministry this past month and please continue to pray for our teen-agers, college students, and leaders.

Meeting for all parents of 12th graders and teens who are in 12th grade. This is a meeting designed to open up conversation to help with the transition out of high school. We will discuss various issues, top-ics, and network together to help with the transition.

Here’s a glance to what our preschool friends will be learn in April:

Come experience an evening of fun together as a family

as you learn what God’s word has to say about honesty.

This evening is geared towards you, the family, because

even though we think that what we get to talk about

with your kids is important we believe that what you do

and talk about with them at home is even more im-

portant.

Sunday morning preschool small groups leaders meeting will be on

XTREME BIBLE GAMES

Due to the weather we experienced in March we are ex-

tending our season of XBG and the XBG Championship will

be held on April 15th in the Jam City Park. Anyone who

wishes to watch the final matches, and test your own

knowledge of God’s word, is welcome to attend. Jam City

Park is located on the second floor of the Next Center,.

*There will not be any scheduled matches held on April 1st

or April 8th.

Squeaky Clean Competition

One way that our preschoolers can “Go & Tell” is by supporting those who can actually go and tell.

We will be supporting Hotel Inc. this month by hosting a competi-tion between all our Sunday Preschool Groups: 8:30 JAM, 9:45 Purple, 9:45 Red, 9:45 Blue, and 9:45 Yellow to see who can bring in the most small, travel packs of baby wipes. The last Sunday to collect will be April 26th.

The travel packs of wipes provide a quick clean up for those on the Street Team and Medical Team with Hotel Inc.
