CONCERT BANDAlien CrossfireMcBride, JonathanProgrammatic023-4539-00

$59.80C.L. BARNHOUSEhttp://www.barnhouse.com/~barnhous/view_score.html?pdf=/~barnhous/samples/pdf/023-4539-00.pdf&mp3=/~barnhous/samples/mp3/023-4539-00.mp3“Alien Crossfire” combines contrasting themes to create musical moments that will engage younger students. Using only the first six notes taught in most beginning band methods, the piece only deals with whole/half/quarter and eighth notes. There are 4 integral percussion parts. Melody does get passed around the band and there is countermelodic movement, a great tool for reinforcing the importance of listening to the other sections in the band.Programming Suggestion: Classtime use for the teaching of fundamentals, Concert or Festival Closing selection for a first year ensemble. 1:31

AspirationsClark, LarryMarches/FanfaresPPS46

$67.50 CARL FISCHERhttp://www.carlfischer.com/shop/aspirations-3.htmlAspirations is written for the youngest and least experienced of musicians, who have only had a short time on their instruments. This piece uses minimal material, including no more than two repeated eighth notes as the most difficult rhythm. It contains fanfare gestures, marcato melodic material, and a contrasting legato theme. Every section of the ensemble is featured in this piece which does have somewhat of a sophisticated sound for beginning band music in 4/4 and B flat major.Programming Suggestion: Winter Concert for first year ensemble. 2:26

Battle of the PrimesRoszellProgrammatic45761

$59.80ALFRED/BELWINhttp://www.alfred-music.com/player/BelwinConcertBand2017/45761/player.htmlBattle of the Primes is accessible to students in the second half of their first year of instruction. This piece has everything - including distinct tongued versus slurred patterns, simple rhythms, ritardendos, multiple style/tempos, and rapid dynamic contrasts. It appears that this composer put extra thought into composing this programmatic piece with as much teachability as possible.Programming Suggestion: Festival for an advanced first year ensemble or Spring Concert. 2:00

Bringer of WarBalmages, BrianConcert/FestivalB1695

$59.80THE FJH MUSIC COMpANyhttp://www.fjhmusic.com/band/audio/B1695.mp3Inspired by The Planets by Gustav Holst, this original piece pays homage to the first movement, Mars. Using only six notes in all instruments, the music still has bold, majestic melodies and rhythmic ostinato. The students will get to learn about loud dynamic ranges and strong/accented articulations at an early stage, as well as harmonies which are not typical for beginning band repertoire, particularly given the limited number of notes used in this piece. There are great composer and music history/literature assignments to be born from housing this piece in your library. Programming Suggestion: Classroom Fundamentals and Concert Opener for a beginning band. 2:18

Swansea TownHolst/StoryConcert/Festival45762

$59.80ALFRED/BELWINhttp://www.alfred-music.com/player/BelwinConcert-Band2017/45762/player.htmlSwansea Town is originally a sea shanty from southern England and is taken from the Interlude of the first movement of Holst’s Second Suite in F. This piece makes use of the full B flat major scale. It is full of teachable concepts including simple rhythms and rest counting, countermelodies, and articulation differences.Programming Suggestion: Opening Festival Selection for a first year ensemble. 1:34

Wenceslas VariationsArr. Wagner, Douglas Holiday45763

$59.80ALFRED/BELWINhttp://www.alfred-music.com/player/BelwinConcertBand2017/45763/player.htmlThese variations are designed for performance after only a couple of months of instruction. The carol can even be performed before the concept of key signature is introduced. Besides performance, this arrangement offers superb teaching opportunities, including counting and ensemble playing, as well as brief rudimentary percussion feature segments. Utilizing only the first six notes with quarter notes, the piece is in E flat major with unison melodies and even a melodic split to teach rest counting and call and response! Programming Suggestion: holiday Concert for a grade 7 Band. 1:58

DaydreamsRomeyn, RobLyrical023-4556-00

$58.50BARNHOUSEhttp://www.barnhouse.com/view_score.html?pdf=/~barnhous/samples/pdf/023-4556-00.pdf&mp3=/~barnhous/samples/mp3/023-4556-00.mp3Daydreams carries a memorable melody which is pre-sented amid a flowing countermelody, moving through a variety of textures and colours. Teaching opportunities abound to reinforce phrasing, balance, blend and dy-namic shaping. This is also a great study for intonation. There are active percussion parts throughout the entire piece, which is set in 4/4 and in b Flat Major.Programming Suggestion: Festival Lyrical Selection for a B100/grade 1 entry. 2:50

Christmas gig Book #2Arr. Marlatt, DavidHolidayCB17337

$50.00 EIgHTH NOTE pUBLICATIONShttp://www.enpmusic.com/sound/CB17337-3-Joy_to_the_World.mp3This collection is designed for developing players to enjoy fun arrangements of Christmas music at a suitable level. All technical requirements have the younger musician in mind while still allowing for all parts to be interesting and a little different from most traditional arrangements of these carols. Pieces included are: O Come, all Ye Faithful, Silent Night and Joy to the World.Programming Suggestion: holiday Concert for a variety of grade levels. 5:40

DystopiaColes, JayConcert/FestivalCA23350

$67.50 C. ALAN pUBLICATIONShttp://c-alanpublications.com/content/mp3/dystopia-full.mp3Dystopia is a dark musical exploration of a nation severely damaged by a long war. Filled with driving rhythms, occassional dissonances, and rapid-fire tuttis, the piece has very active percussion parts throughout, including brake drum part which shouldnt be missed! This is more difficult then the publisher’s grading of 1 - closer to 1.5 - 2 in Ontario.Programming Suggestion: Concert or Festival Opening Selection. This is a good option for a grade 9 band formed from multiple feeder schools with varying ability levels. 2:25

GRADE 1 continued CONCERT BANDJourney of the BonfireOwens, WilliamProgrammaticB1719

$54.60 THE FJH MUSIC COMpANyhttp://www.fjhmusic.com/band/audio/B1719.mp3This piece is full of meat and potatoes for the young ensemble. With a 4/4 fanfare intro, the piece rockets into a 3/4 second faster section. Journey to the Bonfire can be consid-ered a great way to teach meter and tempo changes, articulation and especially accented notes, accidentals and the overall stately feel of a fanfare. There is good percussion for at least 3 players. Programming Suggestion: Concert or Festival Opening selection. 2:00

Little Bears LullabyNeufeld, MattCanadian LyricalCB17329

$45.00EIgHTH NOTE pUBLICATIONShttp://enpmusic.com/sound/CB17329.mp3This was written for this Winnipeg band director turned composer’s two children. Little Bear’s Lullaby evokes musical images of a warm bed, a cozy blanket, and falling asleep next to people that you love. The melody, countermelody and detail to phrase shaping are just a few of the concepts which are teachable in this piece. The lullaby is in 3/4 and F major, modulating into b flat to conclude the piece. Programming Suggestion: Canadian Content requirement for a B100/grade 1 festival performance. 1:58

The Lost Lady FoundGrainger/StoryConcert/Festival45771

$66.30ALFRED/BELWINhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQEvmFUMWI0The melody is most known as the basis of the last movement of Percy Grainger’s masterwork, Lincolnshire Posy. In 3/4 time, there are a few accidentals carefully listed for the conductor that may need reviewing. Attention to the articulations, phrasing, and breath marks will make this work a classroom challenge and perfect for ensemble development. This would work particularly well for a Grade 9 beginner class.Programming Suggestion: Concert or Festival Opening Selection. 1:51

Night FuryChambers, Carol BrittinConcert/FestivalBPS108

$74.50CARL FISCHERhttp://www.carlfischer.com/shop/night-fury.htmlNight Fury is intended to portray a mythological time period, full of adventure and excitement with images of dragons, castles, and other legendary creatures - the piece is influenced by well known film scores. The melody is simple, the backgrounds and syncopated ostinato parts are well written, as well as the distribution of melodic material throughout the band. At least 3 strong percussionists are needed for this piece, which is arguably a Grade 1.5 by our standards. Programming Suggestion: Concert or Festival Opening Selection for a second year/grade 8 band. 1:53

Ride21 Pilots/VLOPop45780

$72.80ALFRED/BELWINhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAKdvBcH8uAPop duo TWENTY ØNE PILØTS hit #1 on the Billboard charts with this hit tune, “Ride.” This is a very clean arrangement with many strong technical considerations. Keyed in E Flat Major, this could be accessible within the first year. Programming Suggestion: Spring Concert. 1:48

GRADE 1.5Amber SkiesMcBride, JonathanLyrical024-4538-00

$63.60C.L. BARNHOUSEhttp://barnhouse.com/~barnhous/samples/mp3/024-4538-00.mp3“Amber Skies” is a lyrical and moving work with simple melodies and coun-termelodies which are combined to use this piece as an introduction to the lyrical/expressive style. Ranges and rhythms are kept manageable , in order to focus on an expression, intonation, and dynamic variation. The low voice group completes the second half of the main statement of the melody, estab-lished by the high woodwinds. The piece is in B Flat Major throughout and is in 3/4 time. Programming Suggestion: Festival Lyrical selection for a B100/grade 1 entry. 2:10

Attack of the CyborgsBuckley, RobertCanadian ProgrammaticHL04005116

$59.80HAL LEONARD MUSICWORkShttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9D7YAtvGbc&feature=youtu.beThe british-canadian composer uses his background in crafting sci-fi scores for television to create this ecinematic composition that pits humanity against the sin-ister cyborg army. This is scored for 2nd year players, with relatively easy rhythms however the piece is full of chromaticism - a great teaching tool! Blocked chords (including many diminished) are used as well as engaging and involved parts for most players in the band. Programming Suggestion: Light or Spring Concert for a grade 8 band. 2:31

Fanfare for a CelebrationPearson, BruceMarches/FanfaresWB491

$71.50kJOS MUSIChttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TPFj938aqUAfter a brief introduction by the entire percussion ensemble, the winds enter with a stately theme with accompaniment. A contrasting section features the woodwinds playing a tender melody before the percussion brings back the initial theme and ends the piece triumphantly. Simple ranges and rhythms are used, however the piece is appropriate for the second half of the first year of study. Correlated with Tradition of Excellence Book 1, page 23.Programming Suggestion: Classroom Repertoire, Spring Concert for beginning band. 2:00

invictus REXPutnam, MatthewProgrammaticFPS148

$79.80 CARL FISCHERhttp://www.carlfischer.com/shop/invictus-rex.htmlInvictus Rex is the Latin phrase for an invincible or undefeatable king. It calls to mind a paragon of strength, boldness, and confidence in the face of chal-lenges and adversity. This is the imagery used to create this highly program-matic work by a relatively new composer to the band scene. The piece has no introduction, and launches directly into melody, which is based on simple quarter and eighth note patterns. Included are countermelodic sections, a call and response melodic section, and an interlude lyrical section in 3/4. Ranges and rhythms are very accessible throughout the piece. There are 3 integral percussion parts in the piece. Programming Suggestion: Festival Closing Selection for a second or third year ensemble. 2:57

BazaarStandridge, RandallProgrammaticGMM400

$84.50 gRAND MESA MUSIChttps://grandmesamusic.com/component/songpub/song/2208?Itemid=1386Bazaar is intended to take the listener on a musical trip to the exotic markets of the Middle East. The use of an altered scale makes the piece a great introduction to chro-maticism. Colourful percussion writing (including handheld instruments and a china cymbal) make the piece very exciting rhythmic and driving. Programming Suggestion: This is a good September piece for an older and more experienced ensemble to kick off the year successfully, or a challenging festival piece for a grade 8 band. 2:00

Eagles Among UsBalmages, BrianMarches/FanfaresB1686

$84.50THE FJH MUSIC COMpANyhttp://www.fjhmusic.com/band/audio/B1686.mp3This overture with cinematic overtones is designed to be playable by band alone, yet offers the option of band and strings combined for a massed performance. Depicting the vision of the world from the eyes of an eagle while in flight, the music includes dramatic fanfares juxtaposed with moments of lyricism that range from calming to soar-ing. This is in the fanfare category, written in the true style of Brian Balmages. Rich sonorities, full and large entrances by the lower voiced sections, active and supportive percussion parts, and well executed modulations. Programming Suggestion: Concert Opener for Band, or Closing selection for Massed school group or Symphony. 2:30

$60.00EIgHTH NOTE pUBLICATIONShttp://enpmusic.com/sound/CB17326.mp3The title of this suite refers to the headdress (the “glen”) worn by the cadets of the Lorne Scots Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps and the “galley” is the Galley of Lorne, which is displayed on the coat of arms for the Dukes of Argyll. This piece is set in 3 contrast-ing sections, each with a Scottish feel - The Sapling Grows, Colonel Parker and For Our Heritage. The piece will introduce the students to a multi movemented work, and provides numerous cross curricular options. Programming Suggestion: Themed or Spring Concert for an advanced grade 8 band or experienced grade 9’s. 3:00

Lightspeed!Buckley, RobertCanadian Concert/FestivalHL04004993

$71.50HAL LEONARD MUSICWORkShttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0Y3NQ9LvCoLightspeed is a high-velocity piece built almost entirely on fast-moving staccato eighth notes. Tempo should be at least 10 beats per minute faster than this studio recording. Inspired by the painting technique of pointillism, which uses small distinct dots of color combining to form an image, the overall effect of Light-speed is an energetic ride that is exciting and fun for the audience as well as the performers. Attention can be paid to chromaticism, layered sections, small melodic fragments, and accented notes. Programming Suggestion: Canadian Content for festival - Opening selection for a B200/grade 2 entry. 2:09

CONCERT BANDMemories from Another TimeBell, JeremyLyrical45977

$62.40ALFREDhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RopRWID--cMThe piece is set in 3/4 and b flat major throughout. Portrayal of nostalgia and serenity, this composition has a lot of teachable moments for young musicians, including low brass and woodwind melodies and opportunities for part independence and expres-sion. There is percussion writing in the piece which includes windchimes.Programming Suggestion: Lyrical /Middle piece in a festival entry for a second year ensemble. 2:48

StrykerArcari, TylerProgrammaticFPS137

$79.80CARL FISCHERhttp://www.carlfischer.com/shop/stryker.htmlThe term, “stryker” refers to an individual who assisted a blacksmith with his craft, wielding a hammer and shaping iron to their will. This is a dark and harsh piece full of percussive sounds depicting a Stryker as they assist a blacksmith. The use of a break drum provides a hammered-iron effect while a china cymbal mimics the steam of tempering steel. This is a very programmatic piece with ongoing opportunity to teach articulation, tempo, quick dynamic shifts, and melodic recognition.Programming Suggestion: Concert or Festival closing selection. 2:23

City of StarsArr. Vinson, JohnnyFLEX POP 2.5HL04005105

$69.80HAL LEONARDhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHMFUQ-GqI0The highly acclaimed movie musical La La Land took home six Academy awards, including Best Original Song for “City of Stars.” This is a 5 part arrangement of this charming song scored for flexible instrumenta-tion. Hal Leonard’s flex band series is a good option for split/combined level high school ensembles, all in the grade 2.5 range - as parts are assignable, string parts are also included so these can be used for full Symphony orchestra.Programming Suggestion: Spring or Pops Concert. 2:32

images of SpainArr. Story, MichaelTranscriptions45789

$79.80ALFRED/BELWINhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex5tVNI50hAThree contrasting and traditional Spanish melodies are interwoven as a medley with great cross cur-riular project/assignment opportunities. The medley Includes “Asturias” by Isaac Albéniz, Granados’ “Spanish Dance #5” from his Twelve Spanish Dances, and”España Cañi,” a paso doble by Pascual Marquina Narro featuring a wide variety of ensemble textures. This is a great piece for teaching (and reviewing) rhythm, articulation, metre shifts amidst rapid style changes.Programming Suggestion: Spring Concert for a grade 9 or cobined level group. 3:41

in infamyWilds, JackConcert/FestivalB1711

$71.50THE FJH MUSIC COMpANyhttp://www.fjhmusic.com/band/audio/B1711.mp3This piece is actually quite American and patriotic in its intention. It is a powerful and dramatic program-matic piece written to commemorate President Roosevelt’s Pearl Harbor Address. Realistically, this is a Grade 3 piece and appropriate for a Senior perform-ing ensemble. The piece is very Balmages-esque, the composer has heavy influences and references to his editor’s style of composition. Included are flute and oboe solos, dominant french horn and trumpet intro and fanfare lines - but totally accessible woodwind and brass parts overall. The piece is a series of fanfare and melodic fragments, yet it has a driving direction to a very loud and triumphant finish. Workable char-acteristics are definitely dynamics while maintaining the tonal centre, style changes, and very accented articulations.Programming Suggestion: Festival Closing Selection for a B300/grade 3 performing ensemble - this would work well for a combined/10-12 split as the varying ability levels would be able to pull together for the goal of making music with this piece. 4:30

Such Small ThingsDaughtrey, NathanLyricalCA23230

$94.50C. ALAN pUBLICATIONShttp://c-alanpublications.com/content/mp3/suchsmallthings-full.mp3Such Small Things is a gift to the composer’s baby daughter. The ballad simultane-ously celebrates the anticipation of life and the joy that her life has brought into the world. The composer is a percussionist, hence the continuous and at times heavy use of a variety of percussion instruments such as glockenspiel and sleigh bells. The melody is quite stunning and the piece is a great opportunity to have the entire band involved in the excercise of musical interpretation. The piece is most appropriate for a high school band.Programming Suggestion: Festival Lyrical selection for an experienced grade 9 class or a combined 10-12 split. 4:08

Twleve Carols for ChristmasArr. Wagner, DougHoliday45783

$79.80ALFRED/BELWINhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYxF4CC7JncRapidly shifting meters, styles, timbres, and dynamics pave the way for the medley of 12 Christmas Carols. Some are featured for less than 4 measures. The arrangement is clever but will require some careful study and somewhat of a philosophy. This is not a traditional holiday sing-along medley.Programming Suggestion: holiday Concert for an Experienced grade 9 ensemble. 1:58

X-FactorOare, MichaelConcert/FestivalHL04005112

$64.80HAL LEONARD MUSICWORkShttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbEDbNmtgGM&feature=youtu.beComposed entirely in a single fast tempo, this work uses a 2-measure rhythmic pattern as the underlying unifying element. There are sudden shifts in dynamics along with instrument groups added in layers, all culminating in an exciting fin-ish. Fragments are passed around between sections of the band in 3/4 time - while reasonable ranges and accidentals are comensurate with a higher level Grade 2 ensemble.Programming Suggestion: Festival Opening selection. 3:12

A Child’s LullabySheldon, RobLyrical45986

$71.50ALFREDhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4zrKoMam_sThis piece is dedicated to Olivia Caldwell---a beautiful and charming little girl who was taken by cancer at the age of 20 months. The melodic material in this piece is strong , even through the introduction. The majority of the piece is in 3/4. The initial statement of the main melody is via flute solo, with clarinet and trumpet solos later in the piece. Rich sonorities provide a perfect opportunity to teach balance, blend and overall ensemble musicianship.Programming Suggestion: grade 3/Lyrical Festival Selection for a high school (grade 10 or higher) band. 4:03

$64.80HAL LEONARD MUSICWORkShttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sywb5ZRAVKs&list=PLrbsfAlugVbDkbMM_3w8V0cUw4I7cNZTh&index=1The opening movement of Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy is the brief yet engaging “Lisbon” and has been arranged here for young players and reduced instrumenta-tion. Even with minor simplification and modest ranges, this is a very accurate arrangement with rich authentic harmonic structure resulting in thick texture. Therefore the inner parts become very important. There are still big challenges for a younger ensemble such as the two-over-three patterns and the over-dramatization of dynamics in true Grainger style. Lisbon is a fantastic way to introduce Grainger to younger students.Programming Suggestion: Class study and Festival opening selection for a grade 9 ensemble. 1:29

$84.50 gRAND MESA MUSIChttps://grandmesamusic.com/component/songpub/song/2211?Itemid=1386Sweet Little One is a lullaby, with a melody that the composer sang to his son during the first few weeks of the baby boy’s life. The piece features a simply melody and sweeping eighth note countermelodies, giving it potential to teach your students to play lyrically and expressively. The chordal structure (particularly in-versions and many close thirds in the woodwinds) make this a good piece to teach intonation and phrasing.Programming Suggestion: Remembrance Day Assembly, Festival lyrical Selection for a combined/split level high school band. 4:00

$94.50C. ALAN pUBLICATIONShttp://c-alanpublications.com/content/mp3/wondrouslove-full.mp3This free setting of the hymn song “What Wondrous Love Is This” focuses on the variety of tonal colors and instrumental textures possible with the wind band. In terms of teachability there are very rich sonorities in this piece, as well as carefully derived phrase beginnings and endings. Most of the harmonic structure is thick and close together, so this is a perfect intonation study for an advancing band. $77.50 HAL LEONARDhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-6OO5JAOMgComposed in 1925 by Spanish composer Jaime Texi-dor, this moderately paced march (paso doble) has a proven long-lasting appeal and musicality. Blue MamboSweeney, MichaelConcert/FestivalHL04005110

$91.00HAL LEONARD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPbrxwGISgIOpening with a lyric section featuring a solo for flugelhorn (or trumpet), this work includes melodies surrounded by lush and “bluesy” harmonies. The uptempo “mambo” kicks in with a percussion groove that accompanies the melodies and riffs from the full ensemble. This is quite different from Michael Sweeney’s usual menu of compositions. There are im-portant handheld percussion parts including shaker, mambo bell, and cabasa - as well as the call for both floor toms and timbales. A minimum of 5 players are needed. This piece is definitely an excercise in count-ing and paying attention to entries against opposing rhythms in other sections of the band. Rehearsal time will be spent on fitting the pieces of the rhythmic puzzle together. Programming Suggestion: Concert or Assembly Closer. 4:08

$71.50HAL LEONARDhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi5zJdrj6Mw&index=1&list=PLrbsfAlugVbDLAPkvZLxLfxzu5HAEbH4S&t=8sIn addition to being a hit single on the pop charts, this catchy and upbeat Justin Timberlake tune is featured in the animated film Trolls. The opening melody is play by alto sax solo, followed by trombones and baritones, and finally the entire ensemble. With interesting parts for all sections of the band, this is sure to be enjoyed by your players and audience alike. This is a perfect example of using a higher grade levelled arrangement for younger students to help them learn concepts such as dotted rhythms and ties (since they know the song, they will equate one to the other and use their ears! There are important mallet percussion parts, a prevalant set of technically driven flute parts, and the need for a few loud and accurate french horn players. Passerine/NFLD Folk SongArr. Strommen, CarlLyricalCPS199

$133.00 CARL FISCHERhttp://www.carlfischer.com/shop/passerine-3.htmlBased on the Newfoundland folk song “She’s like the Swallow”, Passerine refers to “the swallow” found in the lyric of this song of lost love. There is a transpar-ent orchestration to begin the work (including a moving exposed bassoon part) contrasted with the entrance of the full ensemble for the next statement which evolves into an Alto Sax/Vibes unison duet of the second verse. This is a very well scored interpretation of the folk song, with a broad yet thick texture, perfect for reinforcing balance and blend, at a high level of overall musicianship. The musical intracacies may push this grading to a 3.5 or even 4 for contest purposes.Programming Suggestion: Lyrical Festival Selection for an advanced high school ensemble. 3:47

Driving and active percussion (need 4 players with a good snare reader) and changing moods within a constant Allegro Vivace tempo create musical tension between the syncopated melodic lines and flowing harmonies. There is a short 1st trumpet solo and some prevalant french horn lines in the final statement of the piece, which is somewhat repetitive however this as-pect makes it easier to prepare for a performance, this is considered a concert-level work, and is composed using many classic band techniques from patterns from 20 years ago, representative of the majority of this composer’s library.Programming Suggestion: Festival closing selection for a high School level ensemble. 3:55

GRADE 3.5 CONCERT BANDEinherjarBell, JeremyProgrammatic46002

$99.80 ALFRED https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pxM0nuhvQMThis programmatic piece is written to evoke courage, strength, and valor of Viking soldiers with its heroic sound characterized by heavy accents, aggressive percus-sion, and driving ostinatos. The piece is a single fast tempo, with a recurring melody split by the woodwinds and trumpets. There are very reasonable technical considerations for the high woodwinds and modest brass ranges. There is a need for 4 strong percussionists and a piccolo player.Programming Suggestion: Concert or Festival opening selection for an advanced high school wind ensemble. 3:31

$114.90 gRAND MESA MUSIChttps://grandmesamusic.com/component/songpub/song/2225?Itemid=1386This work’s imagery is of a Viking Expedition into the frigid North Atlantic seas, first depicting the high spirits of the sailors as they set out to sea. The slower middle portion of the work depicts a scene of navigating in dense, icy fog, and the work culminates using an aleatoric section to help depict the Vikings attack on a sea village. The nautical sounding piece is in 12/8 time, with many variations in rhythm, very active percussion (at least 4 players are needed) and with many flowing eighth note lines. There are multiple sections to this piece which would require small sectional time. Easiest conducted in two.Programming Suggestion: Themed Concert or Festival Closing Selection. 5:30

This edition still emphasizes overexaggerated articulation, quick dynamic changes, quick modulations, while maintaining a steady March tempo . With Technical parts in the upper woodwinds and shouting entries in the brass section, the transcription is a challenge - also a great representation of Prokofiev’s large ensemble literature.Programming Suggestion: Spring or Themed Concert selection for a senior wind ensemble. 2:20

St Croix StrutStamp, JackConcert/FestivalJB101

$77.50kJOS MUSIChttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t76qDoiZ4EDr. Stamp is known for his chorale writing which is the lead-off for this multi-sectioned and multi-faceted work. This is considerably a “groove” piece, with re-peated ostinatos, a simple set of repetitive melodies. The work in this piece comes with rhythm, specifically melodic and countermelodic groups against bass groups, where it becomes a puzzle that needs to be pieced together so that the percussion groove does not fail. A strong percussion section is needed for the piece including 2 capable mallet players, there are exposed solos throughout.Programming Suggestion: This is a fantastic piece for a Concert interlude, or a Festival opening selection, arguably for a grade 4 ensemble. 5:02

GRADE 4Blue Ridge, TheSheldon, RobProgrammatic45999

$110.50ALFREDhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4zh16Z22O0The Blue Ridge is a series of folk melodies including the spirited “Jack-a-Roe, “Come All Ye Fair and Ten-der Ladies, “Tom Dooley”, and “Barbara Allen.” This is a medley with high demands on the upper wood-winds, with prevalant oboe and english horn parts as well as a great deal of rhythmic and melodic varia-tion. All sections of the band have melodic material at one stage or another as well as extremely active and interesting background parts. the piece would flourish with dedicated sectional time but by blocks (upper woodwinds/saxophones and horns/brass). Program-ming Suggestion: Opening selection for a Concert or Festival for a Grade 4/B400 level group. 6:18

Rollette’s DeceptionStamp, JackConcert/FestivalJB102

$97.50kJOS MUSIChttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyBiyXYhgewThe piece is extremely unpredictable. The main premises are constant shifting metres, based on one recurring motive that is built so well harmonically. It is passed throughout every section in the band includ-ing exposed soloists (such as alto sax and piccolo). The middle lyrical section is a variation of the main mo-tive, set in 3/4, it carries rich and powerful harmonies and climaxes. The final section is a recapitulation which unravels and expands into a bigger combina-tion of sounds. This is one of Dr. Stamps better Grade 4 band compositions. Programming Suggestion: Con-cert or Festival Closing selection for a Senior Wind Ensemble. 5:07

$123.60THE FJH MUSIC COMpANyhttp://www.fjhmusic.com/band/audio/B1694.mp3This innovative work uses colours to convey the abstract concept of optical prisms spinning freely in space while reflecting light in numerous directions. With a strong nod toward Impressionism, the music has a significant focus on harmony, texture and or-chestration. One recurring motive is the basis for the entire piece. Many strong and full modulations, and many of them unpredictable. A willing and aggressive percussion section of at least 5 players with two strong mallets players is needed for the piece. The main ini-tial statement is written for English Horn, but cued in Alto Sax. Depth is needed in every section of the ensemble, but particularly in the high woodwinds and percussion.
