President’s Message:
What Did You Say? (Part II) Last month I mentioned about the language barrier, or the
difference in our English and the English that is spoken across the big pond in England. Here’s a few more oddities.
Chocolate Chip Cookies are the most popular cookie in the U.S., Cookies are referred to Biscuits in England. Who would bake you Chocolate chip cookies, Mom of course, not in England, it would be your Mum. Super Bowl was in January, Daytona 500 was in February, many people have parties with lots of food to celebrate these events. One item that is usually at every party to munch on are Potato Chips which happens to be the number one snack in America. Well here we go again, Potato Chips are called Crisps in England. Wondering what chips are? Well of course they are what we call French Fries, as in the term “Fish ‘n Chips.”
Ok see if you can follow this one. As mentioned last month fanny is a word to us meaning our lower back side. In across the pond English Bum refers to the back side unlike here it means Hobo, however the Brits definition of Hobo is tramp which tramp over here refers to hooker. Round and round we go. Along those same lines if someone gets hooked up with a tramp the English thought process is that he got hooked up last night to go shagging.
What Did You Say (Part II) con’t As you walk into a friend’s house there is an aroma that over takes you. You say to your
friend “let me have a butchers at your spotted dick.” Of course, here in the states people would
wonder if you started with happy hour cocktails earlier than normal. You clarify things and explain to
them that “have a butchers” means to “have a look” and that the Spotted Dick is a dessert made of
pudding and dried fruit.
An English lady walks into Staples Office Supply store and is greeted by a young man. What can
I help you find today the young man asks? The English lady replied, I am a school teacher and would
like to buy some rubbers for my students. Astonished the young man blushes and does not know what
to say. Then the lady smiles and said, pardon me, I’m from England, I would like to buy some erasers
for my students.
As you read this, spring is about three weeks away, a few days later the Syracuse Motorama,
after that then it’s April. That means it time for our annual “Dust Off Run.” Now is the time to start
thinking about getting your roadster ready drive, it will be here sooner than you think.
Spring is in the air, no stopping it now.

News from NAMGAR: University Motors Announces John Twist Retirement
University Motors Announces John Twist Retirement
Posted: 09 Feb 2017 04:02 PM PST
The End of an Era Announced in University Motors Newsletter
"Grand Rapids, MI (November 7, 2016) After nearly 42 years in full time business at three locations, I
am ceasing repair and restoration operations as University Motors in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the
end of this month, November 2016. The remaining workload will be transferred to Forrest Johnson's
"Rusty Moose Garage," which will continue out of the Patterson Avenue location for now but will move
to Grand Haven, Michigan in the next several months.
"I am not so much "re-tiring" as "re-treading." I will retain the name of University Motors, but no longer operate as a brick-and -
mortar automotive repair facility. My plan is to continue to write technical articles offer technical seminars and workshops, produce
technical videos, and enter the lecture circuit.
"Forrest, who has worked for University Motors for about five years, will keep Curt Saunier in his employ. Curt has worked for UML
for about 23 years. Mike Blackport will continue throughout the transition.
"The University Motors website will remain active. You will always be able to contact me there. I will keep you apprised of changes
in locations and telephone numbers. Safety Fast!
John (Twist)"
John Twist first rode in and drove an MG in Marshall, MI, his hometown, in 1965. It was a green 1957 MGA roadster, which
belonged to his best friend. At a shop in Battle Creek, John spied a forlorn gold MG TD forgotten in a corner. This MG grabbed his
attention — forever! Understand that until this day John was not interested in automobiles. His grandfather had sold cars, his
father’s dream was to own a dealership, but John had never been interested in (and is still not intrigued by) any automobiles —
EXCEPT MGs.
By 1968 John was an MG owner (TD 28822) and quickly began servicing his car. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Army in 1970,
John began a feverish restoration of the TD, eventually slowing, then stalling. He returned to college, only to abandon his studies
to work with another MG fanatic on other people’s MGs –for money. By November 1971 John realized his goal in life was to own
an MG dealership and he began on a route which would take him to England where he worked for the original University Motors in
London for a year, 1972-1973.
John returned to Grand Rapids and went to work for the local MG dealer before moving on to a local independent foreign car
shop. During this time, he began trading MG parts and registered the name of University Motors as his own.

Let’s be honest, the Tokyo Auto Salon isn’t exactly known for its high number of classic vehicles. Instead it’s
known for all the utter insanity of its modification. When a classic shows up, it sticks out. And the WWork rich
blue Triumph TR3A is a Rembrandt at a hipster modern art gallery.
