August 10, 2014 Dear Friends,

Although Jesus was not physically with them in the boat, he nonetheless had been keeping vigilant watch for them in earnest prayer on the distant shore. When Jesus perceived their trouble he came to them walking on the sea and startled them with his sudden appearance. The disciples were terrified rather than joyful when they saw Jesus' presence on the water. They thought a ghost had appeared to seal their doom. At first, they could not believe it was really the Lord who was coming to help them until they heard his reassuring voice - "I am here for you

and ready to help you - let your heart be filled with courage - and do not allow any fear or doubt to hold you back from trusting in me." Jesus calmed their fears, and he calmed the threatening waves and storm as well. This dramatic incident on the sea of Galilee revealed Peter's character more fully than others. Here we see Peter's impulsive tendency to act or speak quickly without thinking through what he was about to do. Peter often failed and came to grief as a result of his impulsive response to challenging circumstances (such a cutting off the ear of a servant who came to arrest Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemani, or Peter promising Jesus that he would never deny him shortly before his betrayal at the high priest's courtyard). When Peter saw Jesus walking on the water, he took a leap of faith only to cave in out of fear and doubt. He failed to keep his eyes on Jesus and to rely on the strength which God readily hands to those who trust in him. In Peter's moment of fear and failure, he fortunately did not give into despair or hopelessness. When his faith began to sink, Peter clutched at Jesus' hand and held firmly. Whatever weakness Peter had, he was not a quitter. Every time Peter fell, he rose again. His failures only made him draw closer to his Lord, and love him more humbly and deeply, and with greater gratitude and trust in his mercy and help. St. Augustine of Hippo, in one of his sermons, provides us with some encouraging words: "Meanwhile the boat carrying the disciples - that is, the church - is rocking and shaking amid the storms of temptation, while the adverse wind rages on. That is to say, its enemy the devil strives to keep the wind from calming down. But greater is he who is persistent on our behalf, for amid the vicissitudes of our life he gives us confidence. He comes to us and strengthens us, so we are not jostled in the boat and tossed overboard. For although the boat is thrown into disorder, it is still a boat. It alone carries the disciples and receives Christ. It is in danger indeed on the water, but there would be certain death without it. Therefore stay inside the boat and call upon God. When all good advice fails and the rudder is useless and the spread of the sails presents more of a danger than an advantage, when all human help and strength have been abandoned, the only recourse left for the sailors is to cry out to God. Therefore will he who helps those who are sailing to reach port safely, abandon his church and prevent it from arriving in peace and tranquility?" (excerpt from SERMON 75.4) (This week's reflection from Daily Reading & Meditation, a Jesuit resource.) God bless you, and always remember, now matter how difficult life may become, Jesus never abandons you. He is with you always. Fr. John Francis Murray, C.Ss.R.

Islamic State pulls down church crosses in northern Iraq as 200,000 flee! Islamic State jihadists who took over large areas of northern Iraq overnight have forced thousands of Christians to flee and occupied

churches, removing crosses and destroying manuscripts, Chaldean Patriarch Louis Sako has said. “(The Christians) have fled with nothing but their clothes, some of them on foot, to reach the Kurdistan region,” Patriarch Sako told reporters. “This is a humanitarian disaster. The churches are occupied, their crosses were taken down,” said Sako. He added that up to 1,500 manuscripts were burnt. The United Nations put the number of people who have fled as high as 200,000, and said that many thousands of people trapped by the militants on Sinjar mountain had been rescued in the past 24 hours. “We’re just receiving the information right now. We’ve just heard that people over the last 24 hours have been extracted and the UN is mobilizing resources to ensure that these people are assisted on arrival,” David Swanson, a spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told Reuters. It is a “tragedy of immense proportions”, he said. Islamic State militants overran Qaraqosh, Iraq’s largest Christian town, after pushing back Kurdish troops across a large area of the north of the country, fleeing residents and Christian clerics said. (Barney Henderson, The Telegraph, Aug 7, 2014)

Please continue to pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in the faith throughout the world.

Please remember to pray for peace in the world, especially for peace in the Middle East, the birth place of our Savior.

At Mass without a watch In a homily earlier this year the pope spoke about necessity of entering into the mystery of the Eucharist. The Pope referred to a very common behavior among Christians: “How many times”, he noted “do we count the minutes... ‘I only have a half an hour, I have to go to Mass…”. This “is not the right attitude that the liturgy asks of us: the liturgy is God’s time and space, and we must put ourselves there in God’s time, in God’s space, without looking at our watches. The liturgy is precisely entering into the mystery of God; bringing ourselves to the mystery and being present in the mystery”. The Holy Father continued, looking at the faithful who were gathered there for the celebration, saying: “For example, I am sure that all of you have come here to enter into the mystery. But perhaps someone has said ‘I have to go to Mass at Santa Marta, because it is one of Rome’s tourist excursions, to go and visit the Pope at Santa Marta every morning... No! You came here, we are gathered here, to enter into the mystery. And this is the liturgy, God’s time, God’s space, the cloud of God that surrounds all of us”. Pope Francis went on to share some childhood memories: “I remember as a child, when we were preparing for our First Holy Communion, they made us sing ‘O holy altar guarded by angels’, and this made us realize that the altar is guarded by angels, and it gave us a sense of God’s glory, of God’s space, and of his time. Then, when we were practicing for our First Communion, we brought forward the hosts and said ‘these are not the hosts which you will receive; they are not worth anything, because the consecration comes later’. It was good for us to distinguish one from the other: it is a memory of the commemoration”. Therefore to celebrate the liturgy means “to be willing to enter into the mystery of God”, in his space and his time. (Tuesday, 10 February, 2014)

The Pope’s Corner

Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary,

August 15 On November 1, 1950, Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity. There were few dissenting voices. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the Catholic Church. We find homilies on the Assumption going back to the sixth century. In following centuries the Eastern Churches held steadily to the doctrine, but some authors in the West were hesitant. However, by the 13th century there was universal agreement. The feast was celebrated under various names (Commemoration, Dormition, Passing, Assumption) from at least the fifth or sixth century. Today it is celebrated as a solemnity. Scripture does not give an account of Mary’s Assumption into heaven. Nevertheless, Revelation 12 speaks of a woman who is caught up in the battle between good and evil. Many see this woman as God’s people. Since Mary best embodies the people of both Old and New Testament, her Assumption can be seen as an exemplification of the woman’s victory. Furthermore, in 1 Corinthians 15:20 Paul speaks of Christ’s resurrection as the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. Since Mary is closely associated with all the mysteries of Jesus’ life, it is not surprising that the Holy Spirit has led the Church to belief in Mary’s share in his glorification. So close was she to Jesus on earth, she must be with him body and soul in heaven.

The Elijah Cup At Sunday Mass the celebrant will

use the Elijah Cup as the chalice. After Communion, he calls a family, individual, or couple forward to receive the Elijah Cup. They receive a blessing and take the cup home, putting it in a place of honor. Each day during prayer time they pray for an increase of vocations. They also enter a thought, prayer, or scripture verse into a prayer journal which travels with the Elijah Cup. Over time, this diary becomes a spiritual journal for the parish. Every Tuesday of the year, at Sacred Heart Parish, we hold a Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Since Sacred Heart Parish is in the care of the Redemptorist Fathers, devotion to Our Lady is very much a part of our parish life. The Redemptorists Rule of Life as written by St. Alphonsus requires that Redemptorists have an extraordinary love and devotion to

our Blessed Lady and to promote this devotion to all in their care. Each Tuesday, after the 11:00am Mass and the 7:00pm Service we have Novena Devotions to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Come and be strengthened and blessed by Our Lady.

“Never was it known that anyone who fled to her for protection, or sought her intercession was left unaided. St. Bernard
