A warm welcome to Lowe Church, Belfast.

In a recent article for The Belfast Telegraph (23/3/18), Victoria Leonard outlines the decline of ‘community spirit’ in our society leading to social isolation and loneliness which many people experience, even here in Northern Ireland (a place renowned for its hearty welcome and generous breakfasts!) Citing a survey conducted by the Rotary Club, she summarises the realities of life today:

The highest percentage of people feeling isolated were in the 16 to 29 age group (71.5%), followed by 62.7% of those aged 30 to 44 - ending the myth that loneliness only affects the elderly.

Further analysis shows that, while nearly half of people (48.6%) see their families on a weekly basis, a small number (2.9%) never see their relatives.

While a third (34.3%) of people see their friends on a monthly basis, almost 6% admit to never seeing them.

Shockingly, the survey found 25.7% don’t know the names of their neighbours.

The majority appear to be disillusioned with life, with just a quarter saying life has “turned out the way they wanted it to” and they “couldn’t ask for more.”

Does any of this resonate with you?

At Lowe, we share life together. And this is not our idea. God made us for community, to live life in relationships with other people. It is how we are fulfilled, what it means to be human. And yet the statistics above suggest many of us are not realising our full potential as human beings.

God also made us in a unique way so that we can enjoy a relationship with God as a friend. It may sound bizarre. In fact, the actor/director Woody Allen, in one of his old wacky films, holds up a picture of the late evangelist Billy Graham and says, “Billy Graham: claimed to know God”. And he is right: it is an audacious claim.

But what if it is true? What if we can know God in a personal way?

Jesus says, “I have called you friends…” (John: 15.15)

Knowing God through Jesus is a journey we love to explore at Lowe, with one important T and C: everyone has space, time and room to be themselves. You don’t have to be a ‘certain type’ of person, or ‘churchy’, to fit into Lowe.

Some Sunday morning, why not come along

as we explore the purpose of life? We will be listening to the original story of Joseph and his technicolour coat (in HD!). Or, join one of our book-club groups (called Contact Groups) as they read together ‘What on earth am I here for?” by Rick Warren, which has sold 32 million copies worldwide. The Alpha Course is a must- do course, exploring the question, ‘Who is Jesus?’ in an open and friendly atmosphere (at White Field Coffee Shop).

You are welcome to join us in all or any of our activities, events and programmes. Please take a good look inside.

We live in such a great part of the city. Please accept this guide as your invitation to what’s on at Lowe.

Have a great autumn!

James

Name : Alec Shaw

What was life like before Church?I grew up with anger issues and a deep frustration because my father wasn’t around. I surrounded myself with the wrong people and their influence in my life was leading me down a path of self-destruction. The only way to block out who I had become was to turn to alcohol and gambling.

How did you hear about Alpha, the church and CAP?At a family wedding I ended up sitting at the table with my now minister. As we chatted he invited me to an Alpha Course run in his church. From that conversation things changed and as a result questions started to come to my mind, I wanted to change the direction of my life.

What happened through Alpha and CAP?At the Alpha Away Day I encountered the

love of God and the power of His Holy Spirit in a way that would change my life forever. All the baggage I had carried with me over the years was replaced with

His wonderful peace, love and assurance that I had been forgiven for all the wrongs in my life.

Through the CAP resource Fresh Start, an 8-week dependency course, I was able to face my demons head on. I learned how to manage my alcohol addiction and I’m now over two and a half years free of drink. The hunger to gamble just disappeared as I focused on God and along with support of family and other Christians God has equipped me to make me to be the person He created me to be.

Join us as we step into the sibling rivalry, workplace tensions and political high drama of the true story of Joseph with the fancy coat. Yes, he did exist. While Broadway and the West End wrote some fi ne tunes, playwrights did not invent the character or script. Joseph is a true story. Did you know it is the longest story in the book of Genesis, spilling over into more chapters than any of the other character accounts mentioned in the fi rst book of the Bible (Abraham, Isaac or Jacob)? So why does Joseph command so much attention?

One reason – Joseph is really a two-dimensional story. It details how one teenager fi nds his true purpose in a famine-prone society, and at the same time, how this boy’s purpose fi ts into the bigger reality of God’s overall plan of love, provision and rescue. And when we read his life story, it does more than give us an interesting biography. For us, Joseph’s story is like a window through which we clearly see our own lives and how and where we fi t into God’s plan for the world today.

The world is not a random, spinning orb in a ‘created by chance’ universe. Rather than a cosmic fl uke, earth and human existence have purpose and design. And so do you. What if God has a purpose for your life, if you dare to look?

I dare you: take a look! It could very well change your life. Join us on Sunday 22nd September at either 9.45 or 11am.

Jesus says: ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

But seek fi rst his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)

The CoachW H O D O E S L I F E B E T T E R

Everyone in the West is familiar with coaches: sports coaches, keep fi t coaches and life coaches. Some coaches are so unique in their expertise they acquire the title ‘guru’. Now mobile phone shops have IT gurus. We are all familiar with coaches and gurus.

What if there is a coach who can guide life in a way that’s different? I don’t mean new exercises or gimmicks or outlandish methods. What if this coach can simply make your life better because he understands you and your needs, your good points and bad ones, better than anyone else? Someone who has a handle on you and what is true about all people

better than anyone else?

John, one of Jesus’ disciples, writes his Gospel with such electric enthusiasm that he skips over Jesus’ birth and early years and rushes to tell the difference ‘The Coach’ makes, inserting sketches of the people he saw and and how their lives were utterly transformed.

There are many coaches today. What if Jesus is the coach you need to make your life better?

Join us on Sundays at 7pm for ‘The Coach’.

My Prayer for Personal Renewal

I pray, Lord, I will take off My sins (wrong thoughts, words and deeds)and put on your righteousness (Your Holy Spirit character: love, joy, peace…)

I pray, Lord, I will take off Self-centredness (striving after my own fame and fortune)and put on your Calling (serving You Lord for your fame and glory)

I pray, Lord, I will take off Self-reliance (which is all about what I can do)and put on Trust (which is all about what you can do)

I pray, Lord, I will take off Old desires and ambitions (making me competitive and binding me to a spirit of rivalry)and put on Your Will (Your specifi c purpose and goals for my life)

I pray, Lord, I will take off My own defences (their usage always makes me so defensive and therefore proud and touchy!)and put on the full armour of God (A perfect Spiritual Suit for all occasions)

O Lord, as I pray in sincerity of heart, meet my desire to exchange the old for the new with your Spirit’s power, love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

´

The word ‘renewal’ literally means ‘exchange’ in the Bible. The Apostle Paul picks up this word and explains it in terms of taking off

or putting on clothes – exchanging old things for new things in Jesus!

4. Individual prayer is available each Sunday after our morning and evening services.

5. At our Contact Groups which meet weekly.

6. By attending one or more of our weekly and monthly prayer meetings.

7. By joining a Prayer Triplet.

8. By joining a Special Prayer Team focusing on ministries and mission.

9. 1 in 4 Prayer initiative. We set aside a week each month to encourage everyone to pray, both individually and together, through special prayer times.

Presbyterian Women have been supporting mission in the Presbyterian Church for over 140 years and most congregations have a PW group. These groups encourage women to become disciples of Christ. The PW Group at Lowe meets at 7.30pm on the second and fourth Tuesday from October to March and all women are most welcome.

It is our passion that every Christian of whatever experience or maturity should find an opportunity to go further in their relationship with God.

Lowe is committed to ‘everyone growing together towards maturity in Christ’. This growth is facilitated through service to God, teaching, learning, and prayer ministry within the context of a church family.

Bible inOne Year

Reading the whole Bible in one year brings a particular benefit and blessing to the reader, as the teaching, stories and events are given their proper context. There are many different tools that we are excited about and believe will help you in your exploration of God’s Word including, but not limited to: Nicky Gumbel’s “NIV Bible in One Year” and “The One Year Bible”. Both have free email and online options as well: just visit www.htb.org.uk/bioy or www.oneyearbibleonline.com. There are also free mobile apps available for smartphones, such as YouVersion: just visit www.youversion.com. Won’t you join us in this adventure?

At Lowe we are passionate about reading the Bible and we encourage our members

to regularly read the Bible for themselves.
