Based on the memoirs o Sister MariaLucia de Jesus dos Santos, and thou-

sands o independent eyewitness accounts,The 13th Day is a dramatic retelling o theexperiences o three shepherd children be-tween May and October 1917.

The 13th Day, the rst major motion pic-ture by directors Ian and Dominic Higgins, opens with Sister Maria Lucia de Jesus dosSantos recalling the events that transpired between May 13, 1917 and October 13, 1917in the Cova da Iria (Cove o Irene) regiono Fatima, Portugal. The date is 1937 andSister Lucia, at the Convent o Ponteverde, has been asked by her superiors to writedown the events that she said “changedher li e orever.”

Sister Lucia places the events in time, demonstrating that they took place duringa period o great turmoil—the First WorldWar in Europe and the Communist revolu-tion in Russia.

“In Fatima,” she says, “we were lucky. It seemed to us as i our lives went on asnormal.”

Lucia introduces us to her cousins, the

other two seers, the compassionate Fran-cisco and the younger Jacinta.

Although primarily black and white, lmmakers Ian and Dominic Higgins

creatively utilize color in the lm duringthose moments when the supernatural is breaking through to our natural world.

This rst happens during the heavenlylady’s rst appearance to the three chil-dren on May 13, 1917.

At the rst apparition, the heavenlylady asks the children to pray the Rosaryevery day, and asks them to return to thesame place, at the same time, on the 13tho every month or ve months.

Although the children agree not to tellanyone, Jacinta is unable to contain her ex-citement, revealing the events to her am-ily members. Jacinta’s ather, “Ti” Marto, isone o the rst to believe the children. Oth-ers are skeptical.

Lucia’s own mother, Maria Rosa (played by Jane Lesley), is both doubt ul and hos-tile, blaming her husband or lling theirchildren’s heads with “ airy stories.”

Unable to get her daughter to recant,

ABOUT THE FILM

Maria takes Lucia to the parish priest,Father Ferreira, or urther interrogation. While not inclined to believe that the ap-parition is rom Heaven, he is willing to believe that Lucia has had some contactwith the supernatural.

As a result o the tremendous amounto disbelie , Lucia is plagued with doubts, nightmares, and the taunts o amily, neighbors, and riends.

Determined to run away and not returnto the Cova, as the 13th o June approach-es, Lucia nds hersel drawn back, “like amoth to a fame.”

“I had to return. She was so beauti ul, sogood. I had to see her ace again and eelthe love in her smile,” says Lucia.

During the second apparition, the chil-dren are again told to pray the Rosary dai-ly or peace. Additionally, Lucia is told thatshe must learn to read and write so thatshe can make the lady’s message knownto the world.

With each new apparition, more andmore visitors are drawn to the Cova, which also attracts the attention o thegovernment o Vila Nova de Ourem, spe-ci cally the attention o the administratorArturo de Oliveiro Santos (played by TarekMerlin).

The vision o July 13th is unlike the pre-vious apparitions. During this apparitionthe children are shown a vision o Hell, told about the uture role o Russia, andare given a vision o an assassination o thePope.

“The things we had seen changed us,”said Lucia. “Jacinta pre erred solitude;Francisco became more withdrawn. Wehid rom the world.”

In August, the children are kidnapped by the major and brought to Ourem, thuspreventing their attendance at the August13th apparition. Unable to get them to re-cant, he threatens each o the children withdeath by being boiled in oil.

While waiting in their prison cell, thepiety o the children impresses the otherprisoners, who end up praying with theseers.

In one o the lm’s most moving scenes, all three children bravely decide to acedeath rather than reveal Our Lady’s se-crets. The children are eventually reed.

By October 13th, the date o the prom-ised miracle, between 60,000-70,000 peoplearrive at the Cova. There, Our Lady reiter-ates to Lucia that people must turn to God.Lucia is also told that Francisco and Jacintawill be going to Heaven soon.

Lucia is worried that she will be le talone, but Our Lady tells her that she willalways be with her.

Those gathered at the Cova witness theincredible Miracle o the Sun as it spins andthen dives in the sky, drying up the groundwhich had been soaked by rain.

A ter the First World War, Francisco suc-cumbs to the Spanish infuenza and dieson April 4, 1919. Jacinta ollows on Febru-ary 20, 1920. Lucia goes to Porto to enterthe School Sisters o St. Dorothy.

“I am told that there is a language inwhich Fatima means peace,” says Lucia atthe lm’s end. “It is my hope that Fatimawill remain a light in the dark. A light thatwill lead us to peace.”

Sister Lucia died on February 13, 2005.The Shrine at Our Lady o Fatima contin-ues to receive more than 4 million pilgrimsannually. Y

To the casual observer or the individu-al who has never be ore heard o the

Church-approved apparitions at Fatima,Portugal, the events may at rst seemshocking, even unbelievable. Yet, the cul-mination o the apparitions—with the Mir-acle o the Sun—was witnessed by morethan 70,000 and testi ed to by even secular journalists. Not only that, but events pre-dicted at Fatima did come to pass in theyears a ter the visions.

While not shown in the lm, Lucia dosSantos and Jacinta and Francisco Marto’s

rst Heavenly visitor wasn’t a Heavenlylady, but a snowy, brilliant, translucent g-ure who identi ed himsel as the Angel oPeace and the Guardian Angel o Portugal.According to Catholic Church teaching, inthe hierarchy o angels, certain angels have been given the task o guarding particularcities, principalities and nations.

The angel’s appearance wasn’t revealed by Lucia until 1937.

The angel’s rst visit occurred in thespring o 1916. On that visit, the angeltaught the three shepherd children to pray.

“My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, andI love you,” taught the angel. “I ask pardon

or those who do not believe, do not adore,do not hope, and do not love you.”

During the angel’s second visit, in thesummer, he encouraged the children topray and o er sacri ces or reparation orsin. On his third and nal visit, in the all,he brought the children Holy Communion.

Thus catechized in prayer, reparativesu ering, and having received Jesus Christin the Holy Eucharist, the children werespiritually prepared or the visitations thatwould begin the ollowing spring.

May 13, 1917On the morning o the east o Our Ladyo the Blessed Sacrament, the three vision-aries, Lucia (10), Francisco (9), and Jacinta(7) led their fock o sheep rom Aljustrel, proceeding north to the slopes o theCova da Iria.

The children had been praying a short-ened version o the Rosary, saying only the beginning part o each prayer. They weresurprised by what they thought to be light-ning and a strange light in the sky.

Near a holm oak, they saw a womandressed in white, shining brighter than thesun, with rays o light coming rom her.

During the visit, the woman asked thechildren i they were willing to o er them-selves to God and bear all the su eringsHe wills to send as an act o reparation orthe sins by which He is o ended, and osupplication or the conversion o sinners. The children agreed to do so.

June 13, 1917On her second visit, the Heavenly ladysaid that her son, Jesus, wanted to estab-lish in the world devotion to her Immacu-late Heart.

July 13, 1917During this visit, the three children wereentrusted with three secrets. The rst wasa vision o Hell. The very truths that ageneration has trouble believing are thetruths that Our Lady allowed those will-ing to listen to see.

The second was a prediction aboutthe end o the war and a warning aboutanother World War, and the role o Rus-sia. The third secret was a vision o an

assassination attempt on the li e o thePope, which wasn’t revealed publicly un-til the Jubilee Year 2000.

Our Lady also established the FirstSaturday devotion, encouraging the aith-

ul to receive Holy Communion every 1stSaturday o the month or ve consecutivemonths or reparation.

August 13, 1917In the government’s attempt to silencethe children and the messages o Fatima, the children were abducted, thrown intoa prison cell, and interrogated under the

threat o death by the administrator Sen-hor Santos.

The children were not swayed by thethreats, but told the truth about the appari-tions and were eventually released.

As a result o the abduction, the childrenwere not at the Cova or the August appa-rition. Those gathered at the Cova report-ed hearing thunder and seeing a fash olightning in the clear sky. A light cloud ap-peared to hover above the holm oak tree.

The lady appeared to the children sixdays later in Valinos saying that manysouls go to hell because they have no oneto sacri ce or pray or them.

September 13, 1917

During this visit, the Heavenly lady en-couraged the children to pray the Rosary

or the end o the war. Reportedly 30,000people attended this apparition.

October 13, 1917By October, the events at the Cova had been reported ar and wide. As a result, some 70,000 people lled the countrysideto observe the predicted miracle.

During this visit, the lady identi edhersel as the Lady o the Rosary andasked the children to continue to pray theRosary daily.

Lucia stated that during Mary’s nal vis-

it, they were given three visions o Mary. Inthe rst, she appeared with the Holy Fam-ily. Mary appeared to the right o the sun.To the sun’s le t, St. Joseph appeared hold-ing the Christ-child in his arms, both trac-ing the Sign o the Cross with their hands.

Lucia stated that Mary also appeared asOur Lady o Sorrows and as Our Lady oMount Carmel.

Many o those gathered saw the sun spin-ning in the sky, and then saw it break looseand zig-zag toward the earth, looking as i itwould all upon the people. Those gathered

ell to the ground praying or mercy. Evensecular and government newspaper reportstell o the Miracle o the Sun.

After the ApparitionsFollowing the apparitions, the seers’ liveswere never the same. Pilgrims desired tosee the children, to ask them questions or

or prayers, and to have them bless ob- jects. Both Francisco and Jacinta contract-ed the Spanish fu and died within a yearo one another. Lucia entered the schoolo the Sisters o St. Dorothy in Vilar, nearOporto, in the north o Portugal. On Oc-tober 24, 1925, she entered as a postulant.

She made her rst vows on October 3,1928, and her perpetual vows on October3, 1934, receiving the name Sister Mary othe Sorrow ul Mother.

In 1946, seeking a more contemplativeli e, she entered the Carmelite convent oSt. Teresa in Coimbra, making her pro es-sion on May 31, 1949 and taking the nameSister Maria Lucia o Jesus and the Immac-ulate Heart.

In the years that ollowed, the predic-tions made by Our Lady did come to pass.World War I ended, but was ollowed bythe more horri c Second World War. Rus-

sian Communism did spread its errorsthroughout the world, but eventually thecountry was Consecrated to Mary’s Im-maculate Heart and the Berlin Wall andCommunist Russia collapsed without

ghting. And the assassination attempton the li e o Pope John Paul II on May 13,1981 ailed.

Believing that it was Our Lady’s handthat guided the bullet’s path, Pope JohnPaul II gave to the then-Bishop o Fatimathe bullet which had remained in the ve-hicle a ter the assassination attempt. Bythe Bishop’s decision, the bullet was laterset in the crown o the statue o Our Ladyo Fatima.

A ter a long illness, Sister Lucia died on

February 13, 2005 at the age o 97.The Third Secret o Fatima—that o

the assassination attempt—was nally re-vealed to the universal Church in 2000, thesame year that Francisco and Jacinta Martowere beati ed.

The messages o Fatima—prayer, re-pentance, sel -sacri ce, reparation, andpeace, are messages that the war-ravagedworld needs today, perhaps now morethan ever. Y

I hope you nd The 13th Day to be asriveting and compelling as I did. This

unique and power ul approach to present-ing the message o Fatima captures the el-ements o human sacri ce combined withDivine intervention that our world so des-perately needs today.

The Fatima message is a message oHope or all people and or all time that wasdelivered to three shepherd children. Godwants all people to know that hell existsand that war is a consequence o spiritualdecay, and He also wants us to save soulsand live on earth in peace.

The Blessed Mother taught us how toavoid the re and pain o hell not only orourselves, but also or our loved ones andothers and how to avoid war; war so devas-tating that nations will be annihilated i wedon’t ollow Heaven’s Peace Plan.

On October 13, 1917 God per ormed thegreatest miracle since Jesus walked the aceo the earth, the only miracle ever predictedas to time and place, a miracle witnessed byover 70,000 people. The miracle was so pro-

ound because God wants us to know themessage is pro ound.

Pope John Paul II said, “The Message oFatima is More Important Now Than Ever.”The Holy Father took steps to elevate theposition o the World Apostolate o Fatima(Our Lady’s Blue Army) to the highest levelavailable within the Church. He did this toincrease our responsibility and our opportu-nity to help people Learn, Live, and Spreadthe Message o Fatima. We are the onlyFatima organization that speaks with eccle-siastical authority on the message o Fatima.

Our world is at a crossroad, we canchoose a path o spiritual decay that leads to

lost souls and wars that will annihilate na-tions or we can spiritually nourish a worldin great need, which will save souls and bring peace to earth. We are all rail and weall ail; however, we can x the damage our

ailures cause by acts o reparation and bysinning less. Prayer, penance, sacri ce, actso devotion loving God, and loving eachother provide spiritual nourishment thatrepairs spiritual damage and leads to thesalvation o Souls and World Peace.

Full members o the Apostolate are askedto pray the Rosary daily while mediating onthe mysteries, wear the Scapular o MountCarmel as an act o consecration, o er toGod the sacri ces demanded by what weare required to do each day given our sta-tion in li e, and accomplish the devotion oFirst Saturday Devotion. Associate mem- bers are asked to start with prayer or thesalvation o souls and world peace and tolearn more about the message o Fatima.

Let us help you learn more aboutHeaven’s plan or the Salvation o Soulsand Peace on Earth. For the asking, wewill provide you with ree in ormation onhow to pray the Rosary that includes themysteries and a ree one year subscriptionto the widely acclaimed SOUL magazinewhich is published quarterly to help peo-ple Learn, Live, and Spread the importantmessage o Fatima.
