History
On July 2, the Continental Congress declared the American Colonies free and independent states from British rule. It took
the delegates two days to agree on a formal
document announcing their actions. On July 4, the Congress adopted the
Declaration of Independence. Only Continental Congress
President John Hancock and Secretary Charles Thompson signed the
rough draft that day. The 55 other delegates
waited almost a month for the final document to be carefully written
on parchment, and they signed it on August 2,
1776. Independence Day commemorates the
adoption of the Declaration of
Independence and has been celebrated
nationwide since 1777, the first anniversary of
the signing.

Post Office* Old mailmen never die. They just lose their ZIP.
* If the world is getting smaller, how come they raise the postal rates?
* Why is it that bills travel through the mail three times as fast as checks?
* Like the letter said to the stamp, “You stick with me, and we’ll go places.
* I know why the post office charges so much for mail. They include storage.
* The new postal rates will guarantee that the post office will get new machines. That way your stuff can get mangled faster.

2015 WYTRANS Awards “Volunteer of the Year”
Nomination LetterOur Tammy Beenken was awarded the WYTRANS Volunteer of the Year. She was
nominated by the Thayne Senior Center. Tammy has volunteered as a home delivered meal driver at the center for many years. She faithfully delivers meals to our home bound seniors every Friday. She is an essential part of our day to day operations. Tammy owns a house cleaning business and works Monday thru Thursday cleaning homes and then volunteers for The Thayne Senior Center on her day off. She has an outgoing personality and a contagious smile. Tammy is always upbeat and has an intense love for each and every senior she delivers to. Every Friday she walks into our office and is so excited to go and see our homebound clients. She says that delivering meals is the highlight of her week. Tammy has a bubbly personality and is always friendly. She is willing to do anything for anyone. She is so attentive to the seniors. She always makes them laugh and is always helping them with small tasks around their homes.
Tammy is always on time and very dependable. Without fail, we know every Friday we will see a fashion-able grandma show up at the center to deliver meals. We can’t say enough wonderful things about her. Tammy is one in a million and deserves to be “Volunteer of the Year”

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. This year the American Cancer Society estimates a million-and-a-half new cases will be diagnosed. Nearly half-a-million Americans will die of the disease. While cancer can occur at any age, the number of cases increases, as we get older. Roughly 77% of cancers are diagnosed in those 55 years of age and older. As babyboomers age the number of older Americans will increase and so will the number of cancer cases. Researchers believe that by the year 2050 the number of cancers in the United States will double. As the number of older patients with cancer increases, doctors may be faced with more complex treatment issues. Other chronic age related conditions, like heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis become more prevalent with advancing age. Medication interactions, changes in drug metabolism, nutritional deficiencies and the ability to tolerate side effects of chemotherapy and radiation can influence the outcome of cancer treatment.
There are other issues of concern. According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, the goals of cancer treatment in elderly patients may differ from the goals of younger patients. Goals include: providing for adequate cancer therapy, maintaining quality of life and avoiding significant treatment toxicities. Special cancer treatment programs are springing up around the country designed specifically to support older cancer patients and their families. In these centers patients are given a thorough medical assessment. The patient is also evaluated for nutritional status, cognitive ability and memory (which can influence treatment compliance), physical limitations and mental state looking for signs of depression or anxiety. A team of health care workers including a nurse, social worker, nutritionist, physical therapist, pharmacist, geriatrician and psychiatrist then meet to develop a treatment plan along with the cancer specialist. With so many people living longer, the number of people living with and dealing with cancer is sure to increase. We need to have the tools to deal with it effectively.
