The center will not tolerate any form of abuse of our volunteers or staff. There is nothing in our charter that compels us to serve those who abuse our services.” We have a cadre of volunteers that really make this place go and we sa- lute them. Heart Cards- February 18th-28th Everytime you come to the center you will receive a heart with a letter on it.

The first one to spell “HEART” will win an awesome prize!

The Thayne Senior Center is much like a duck, in that on the surface, things seem to be quietly drifting along; however, below the surface there is a great deal of paddling going on. In some respects, that perception is intentional. We strive to make this a great place to come and enjoy a peaceful and restful atmosphere while enjoying a well prepared meal. We try to keep you shielded from the hassles and frustrations that we go through to provide meals. Most of our stress comes from external sources: Can we get the product we need for this meal at a reasonable price and in a reasonable time? Do we have adequate funding? Are we complying with state standards? Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.... However, there are times our clients, either intentionally, or uninten-tionally add to the stress. A recent series of incidents have left us scratching our heads. We are in the business of providing services but we must insist on logical boundaries to those services. To shorten the story, we felt it necessary to publish a letter to our home delivered clients, included here are some excerpts. Although the letter was aimed at some of our home delivered meal clients, the basic gist of the could letter apply to any of our clients. Most of our clients are wonderful and understand the boundaries, however some need a reminder. ...”Part of the economy of our services comes from the savings realized because the meals are delivered by volun- teers. As the title ‘volunteer’ implies these special people perform this service without any pay or other reimburse- ment, only for the personal satisfaction of providing a service to others. They should be thanked and valued for what they do for the clients.” ...”Would you believe that some of our clients feel they can verbally abuse these volunteers and make unreasonable demands of them? “ “Our people are our most valued resource. Heres the Scoop... New Donation Box

We have a gorgeous new donation box graciously made by Dan Carter. Check it out when you come to the center. It was

made from wood salvaged from the Catholic Church in Jackson, so it is at least 50 years old. Thank

you so much Dan.

Nutrition Nibbles...

Eating better on a budget1. Plan, plan, plan-

Before you head to the grocery store, plan your meals and snacks

for the week.2. Get the best price-

Check local newspapers and at the stores for sales and coupons.

3. Compare and Contrast-Locate the unit price on the shelf and compare different brands and

package sizes.4. Buy in Bulk-

Choose foods that you use often and can eat within a resonable

amount of time.5. Buy in Season-

Buying fruits and vegetable when they are in season can lower the

cost and add freshness.6. Convenience Costs-

Go back to the basics, take the time to prepare your own.

7. Easy on your wallet-Certain foods like beans, potatoes,

carrots, apples, and bananas are typically low cost options.

8. Cook Once....Eat all Week-Prepare a large batch of your favorite recipe and freeze in

individual containers.9. Get Creative-

Spice up your leftovers- use them in new ways.

10. Eating Out-Save money by getting the early

bird specials or going out for lunch instead of dinner. Also, order water,

not other beverages.

Shoes are designed to protect your feet. Poorly designed or improperly fitting shoes can increase your risk of injury or foot problems. Here are some common foot problems that may be associated with footwear. -Blisters: Blisters are fluid filled sacs that form over areas where the skin is subjected to con-stant friction or rubbing. They are very common and are often associated with new shoes. They can occur when the foot slides inside the shoe, causing part of the shoe to rub against a part of the foot or ankle. -Calluses: Calluses are thickened areas of skin that appear hard and yellow. They typically form in the same areas as blisters and are caused by continued rubbing of the skin. Calluses are commonly seen on the balls of feet or the outside of the big and small toes. Tight shoes and high heel can contribute to calluses because they put extra pressure on these areas of the feet.

-Bunions: A bunion is an abnormal enlargement of the joint at the base of the big toes. It’s caused when abnormal forces are applied to the big toe, eventually forcing the toe to bend inward toward the other toes. The joint is pushed outward, causing a visible bump on the side of the toe. Bunions can be caused by tight fitting shoes. Some people are more prone to bunions than others. The jutting joint rubs against the side of the shoe causing swelling, redness and pain. -Plantar fasciitis: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. Chronic irritation or poor arch support can irritate this tissue. Eventually the tissue may stretch or tear, causing inflammation and heel pain. Some people develop a bone spur, where the tissue attaches to the heel bone. Stretching exercises often are a good treatment for plantar fasciitis. Older folks and those with diabetes tend to have more foot problems, often because of changes in circulation and skin.

Jim & Marsha Bagshaw

Jim was born and grew up in Salt Lake. Marsha was born in Afton and raised here in Star Valley (Auburn). They met when Jim was working in the data sytems department of Mountain Bell. He went to Salt Lake to help install a new computer system. Marsha was working on the manual file conversion and here they crossed paths. They kept a long distance romance for nearly a year before Marsha moved to Denver. They were married in Auburn in the old white church, which is no longer there, on October 23, 1977. Afterwards they went on a honey-moon to San Francisco. They have two children, a daughter and a son; from them, they have 7 grandchildren and 13 great-granchildren (with #14 on the way). Jim and Marsha love to vacation, which you probably already know. They love anywhere a cruise ship sails: Tahiti, New Zealand, Greece, Hawaii, Samoa, etc. They both retired from the old Bell System, Jim when the Bell System broke up, and Marsha a few years later. Jim did have some time working for Bell Telephone Labaratories in New Jersey. Jim and Marsha moved back to Auburn in 1995 and live across the street from the house that Marsha grew up in. They both work here at the Thayne Senior Center and we are happy to have them. They are always smiling and eager to meet a new face.
