Introduction Most people have a fairly fixed idea of what a photo graph is: an imprint of reality, a picture, a repro duction via a camera of something that exists. But is it inherent in the nature of the photograph that it is a picture? That it is an imprint of reality?

That is at least something the artist duo AVPD ques tion in the current exhibition Thawed Time, where they investigate the ontology and method of photography. Through a number of differ ent works of an installational nature they unfold the con cept of the photographic in time and space. It is about light, the effect of light on paper, objects, space and the senses. It is about time, the time of the work and the time of experience ex tended in motion. The time of perception. Altogether the exhibition can be seen as turning the photograph inside out, as a deconstruc tion of its material essence and historical raison d’être. At Fotografisk Center we welcome the experimen tal and innovative. We are therefore truly pleased with the investigation of the identity of photogra-phy which AVPD, that is Aslak Vibæk and Peter Døssing, present here.

Kristine Kern, director of Fotografisk Center

Light Slope, 2018900 x 300 x 1800 mmWhite concrete, brackets

Light Slope is cast in solid white concrete. Four identical slopes define it. They each have a par-ticular design inspired by digital pixels configured in 3D. As the sun crosses the sky the light moves over the surfaces of the concrete. The solid structure dissolves into a play between light and shadow, thus reflecting time and space.

The exhibition hall of Fotografisk Center hosts 9 windows with 255 separate panes in total. All of these have been manually painted with PENOL 1000 blue semi-trans-parent permanent markers. During the exhibition period the UV light from the Sun will cause the colour to fade gradually.

Two Way View, 2018840 x 840 x 260 cmMDF, steel laths, two-way mirror, screws, light system, curtains

Two corridors meet in a cross. A two-way mirror is placed in the intersection. The mirror redoubles the corridors resulting in a displacement of the gaze. Through this very displacement the balance between transparency and the mirror image – the invisible and the reflection – interferes with the relation between viewers moving within the installation.

Flash, 2018380 x 100 cmStrobo, charger device, solar cell panel, cables, tripod

The installation Flash consists of a strobe lamp con-nected to a battery. The battery is powered by a solar panel situated on the roof of the exhibition hall. The energy from the solar panel is stored in the battery and when the battery is fully charged it sets off an ultra short flash of 11.000 joules from the lamp. The frequency of the flash is dependent on the position and intensity of the sun.

Colors, 2018297 x 210 mmSunlight, felt-tip pens, acid-free permanent paper

12 sheets of A4 size paper have been hand coloured, each with a separate marker from a standard box-set of 12 assorted colors. The sheets were then mounted on a window and bleached by the sun over a period of six months. The colours underwent various degrees of deg-radation.

Light Bulb, 2015Context adaptive16:9 format, Quicktime / Full HD Movie

Light Bulb is a film recording of a bulb being switched on. An ordinary light bulb, it takes about three minutes to reach full brightness. The delay is the artistic generator of the projec-tion. In the middle of the projection there is a luminous circle that slowly illuminates the space around it. The image eventually fades out completely and the circle dissolves into the illuminating surface.

Exposure, 2018700 x 500 mmSunlight, acid-free permanent paper

On August 9, 2018, a magnifying glass was fixed to a sketchbook at a distance of exactly 33 cm and placed in the sun. The rays passing through the magni-fying glass was concentrated on the center of the sketchbook. From 10:40 am the rays burned through the layered papers of the sketchbook, leaving their mark. The movement of celestial bodies caused the burning to stop at 12:39 pm, ceasing in the point where the sun dissolves the concentrated sunrays, in relation to the magnifying glass.

Two slide projectors are positioned with same distance facing a straight wall. Each projector is mounted with an empty slide. One slide is positioned horizontally, the other vertically. Both have the exact same dimensions. The empty field of light, from both, is projected onto the wall uniting in a simple overlap.

Polytones, 2016Various dimensionsAcid free cardboard, drawing paper, glue, float glass

Polytones is a series of works made up of white card-board, foil and glass. The interior core of each object is mathematically divided into a set of chambers. The foil between the cardboard core and the glass both works as a diffuser as well as a projection screen for the incoming light. The size and position of each chamber, as well as the position and the strength of the incoming light, defines the tones exposed on the exterior of the object. The objects are light machines continuously changing their tonal combinations as a product of the changing light.
