The HISTORY of Fondi!!!Our Town Has An Ancient History. It Begins With Early Settlements About 1000 BC. Later The Area Was Settled By The Italic Tribes Of Aurunci And Volsci. According To The Legend, Fondi Was Founded By Hercules In Memory Of The Killing Of Cacus.The First Historical Reference To Fondi Dates To 338 BC, At The Time Of The Latin War, When It Became Part Of The Roman Empire.The Importance Of Fondi Lay In Its Position Across The Old Via Appia, That Was The Main Roadway From Rome To Southern Italy. In Medieval Times Fondi Became Part Of The Papal State And The Duchy Of Gaeta. In 1534, Fondi Was Sacked By Barbarossa, Who Tried To Kidnap The Beautiful Giulia And Bring Her As A Gift To His Emperor Suleiman. However, She Managed To Escape. In The 19th Century Started The Decline Of The Town, Caused By Malaria-infested Marshes And Brigandage.

The Castle Was Built In The 14th Century By Onorato I Caetani Over Ancient Roman Walls. In The 16th Century It Was The Seat Of Giulia Gonzaga's Court Of Literates And Artists. Since 1987 It Houses The City's Museum.

• The Palazzo Del Principe ("Prince's Palace"), Next To The Castle, Was Built In 1466-1477.

• The Cathedral Of St. Peter, Built In The14th Century) Over Roman Ruins, Maybe A Temple Of Jupiter. It Houses The Sepulchre Of Cristoforo Caetani.

•The Collegiata Di Santa Maria Assunta, (St. Mary’s Church) Built In The 15th Century By Onorato II

The Territory Of Fondi Is Included In The Regional Natural Park Of Aurunci Mountains And In The Regional Natural Park Of Riviera Of Ulysses.

The Riviera Of Ulysses Extends Along The Coast In The Lazio Region Between Rome And Naples. It Offers A Variety Of Colours. It Is An Area Rich In Nature, Culture, Art, History And Traditions With The Sea And Green Spaces, Archaeological Sites And Medieval Villages, Traditional Sea And Mountain Dishes ,Myths And Legends.
