Wasn’t it fantastic to see page after page of our Veterans in the December Blatt? All those tri-colored magnificent

faces and each expression unique. And it’s official, the #1 loved snack of Berners in New England… is pizza crust!

I hope that you are as proud as I am to be a member of this 33 year old club. And I hope you enjoy the benefits of membership and know that we are many, who are dedicated to the well-being of our Breed. As a club - we are Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise - your membership makes it so! As a club - we assist all the Berners in New England who need a second chance, through our education and rescue team Berner, Inc. - to make it so! As a club- we play together, train together & support the fundraising efforts that make all of these activities possible. I wish us all a great 33rd year! Let’s make it so!

Your submissions to the Berner Blatt and Facebook have demonstrated how much joy we all get from raising and caring for such wonderful, loyal creatures. Our chairpeople have developed, and continually update, a resource library for every member: The E-list, website, monthly newsletter, Facebook , Membership Directory & Resource Guide are your tools to help you with everything “Berner”.

Longevity of our Berners, is always on our mind. Your support of the various health studies brings us closer to the answers we need. Your membership allows you access to reach over 600 Berner owners in our region to discuss issues and exchange information on nutrition, health, and training or just to share the funny consistent way of Berners –like sitting on your foot and leaning “in”.

Our Berners have brought us together for not only social, and educational events but have provided the opportunity for their owners to make some BBFFs - Berner Best Friends Forever. I encourage you to initiate connections with other members. Check out your membership directory and note the zip codes near you. Organize a gathering in your neighborhood and get your dogs together — a win-win for you and your Berner.

Support from other members through the good and bad times is perhaps the biggest membership benefit of all. Owning a Berner means we experience many great times,

but as part of the deal, also some frightening and heart wrenching bad times. There is always an end to our loving partnership and each loss leaves us empty with heartbreak. But with each ending, we are wiser to the ways of the Berner’s spirit and heart.

Many of you attended the 2nd Retreat Weekend and once again experienced the comraderie of being with those who share your love of the breed. The Retreat Weekend is a peaceful, relaxed” Berner Hug” experience on the Coast of Maine. Mark your calendar for Veterans Day 2014 to experience this camp adventure.

Looking forward, our events calendar for 2014 includes three BMDCNV Supported events: Lowell, MA, CT River in Springfield, MA and Tunbridge VT. AKC has approved BMDCNV to plan a concurrent Specialty in June at Ladies in Wrentham, MA this year, which will be two full days of shows. The Spring and Fall Fun Days will be held at the 4-H Fairgrounds in Westford, MA and will also be the location for our 2-day Fall Draft Test. The summer picnic will be held in Kittery, Maine. And we will also sponsor another OFA/Hip Clinic this spring, as well as a Berner-Garde blood draw.

In March 2014, we will offer three distinctive Educational programs - The Breeders Forum, Training Day with Dee Ganley and Speaker Dr. Harvey Cohen. At this year’s annual meeting, Dr. Cohen will share his years of nutritional studies and opinions on longevity for our Berners. Please mark your calendar to attend the Annual Meeting - it is inspiring to see all of our titled working dogs accepting their awards and the announcement of this year’s Shelley Award Recipient on March 16th.

Best wishes for the Happiest of New Years and keep those white tips wagging with many shared nibbles of pizza crust in 2014! Warmest Regards & Smooches to your Pooches,Margie Bumen, President, Cape Neddick, ME

On Veteran’s Day weekend, 39 people and 37 dogs enjoyed another fun filled weekend at Oceanwood in Ocean Park, ME. Most people began arriving on Friday evening and several of us made our way to Jimmy the Greek’s to enjoy great food and entertainment.

Fall Retreat - Veteran’s Day, 2013

On Saturday, Matt and Melissa George ran an Obedience demonstration and workshop, which included Matt and Ryder showing several folks what an AKC Open run looks like. This was followed by Rally Obedience run-thrus, guided by Melissa George and Susan Nowak. Cheryl Brickach conducted a draft match with 3 teams entered, one of which was a brace team. Melissa George and Linda Layman discussed the “ins and outs” of grooming, showing tools and demonstrating techniques. Alise Burbridge gave an informative talk on conformation. The group was able learn about the

Fall Retreat - Veteran’s Day, 2013breed standard and what breed shows are all about, as an exhibitor and as a spectator. We also got to watch Alise stack and move her beautiful boy, Journey. Our first full day ended with Barbie Beck-Wilczek offering an intimate and inspiring talk on therapy dog work. Barbie shared her personal experiences and I think I can speak for everyone when I say it was truly moving to hear about the positive impact of this work.

Sunday began with the Wilczek’s draft workshop. Everybody participated, whether volunteering or learning. Several dogs were fitted for harnesses and hooked up to wheels for the very first time! How amazing to watch these dogs learn to do a job. In the afternoon, Lynn Jones and Jeff Nowak ran a Nosework demonstration where several dogs were able to practice locating a scent.

Of course, in between all of the events, many people were able to enjoy the gorgeous beach. Dogs were able to run in the sand and stick their feet, or whole bodies, in the cold Atlantic Ocean!

We capped off the weekend with a special surf and turf dinner with a slide show presentation that was all about the Berners we love! Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make this weekend a success!—Melissa George; Alton Bay, NH

Lloyd and I had a great time at the Retreat Weekend. We loved the flexible

schedule - do something if you want, don’t do anything, do it by yourself, or do

it with a group. We enjoyed helping out with the workshops and helping some

newbies get acquainted with how much fun you can have with draft work. The

meals were good and a great time to get to know some new friends. The facilities

allowed for a lot of room for dogs and the weather cooperated for the most part.

If you have not attended in the past, be

sure to pencil it into your calendar if one

is scheduled again next year. Whether

you stayed for the whole weekend, or

just came for the day, you would have

had a great time with your dog and

your doggie friends. — Lloyd and Lynn Jones; Intervale, NH

Maggie was surrendered for rehoming when she became too stressed to continue living in a home with several active young children. This sensitive young Berner needed a quiet home. She also has a lot of youthful energy, which was not being channeled positively for her. Maggie went into foster care with Marge and Joe Bumen. Berner, Inc. found the perfect home for Maggie, but her adoption was delayed when a cyst burst in her side. Maggie recovered quickly from surgery in the Bumens’ home. Her relieved adopter took her home with stitches. Maggie lives now in an adults-only home. Her new people have years of dog experience. Maggie has plenty of activity with the family’s young adults. They are so happy to have their new Berner that they have renamed her “Merry.”

On a fine October day, Cleo and Lucy (Berner Inc. adoptee) hiked in the White Mountains with their human

companions, Cleo’s Steve Grega and Lucy’s Gib Otten and Linda DeCelles. They set out from Crawford Notch for their objective, the twin peaks of Sugarloaf Mountain. Cleo and Lucy demonstrated why their breed is a mountain dog. They scampered up the rocky, root-strewn trails with ease, delegating the less agile, two-footed hikers to the rear. What a joyful sight it was to see the Berners’ white tail-tip “flags” light up the path ahead! True Berner companions, they waited at every bend in the trail for their humans to catch up. Except, of course, when a squirrel or chipmunk enticed them into the brush.

At the summit of North Sugarloaf, we stopped to enjoy the view and have lunch. Cleo and Lucy were delighted with their humans’ choice of picnic foods. Hikers started to congregate on the summit, and predictably, they admired Cleo and Lucy as much as the view. Cleo and Lucy were impressed by their lunches! Standing at the edge of a mountain precipice near two backpack-sniffing Berners, I was reminded of the Stephen Huneck adage, “Trust a Dog with your life, but not your lunch.”

We reconsidered hiking to the summit of Middle Sugarloaf

because the trail ascends a steep wooden ladder attached to a boulder. Could the dogs manage it? After some cookie-luring and rear-end lifting, both dogs made it up the ladder easily. Cleo and Lucy meandered around the wide-open rock summit, stopping to lap up the cool water in the rock crevices. After a last

glance at the majestic view, we headed back down—descending the ladder was easier for the dogs.

When we got back to the parking lot, it was still daytime, so we decided to do a quick walk to some falls on Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail. The dogs ambled ahead, stopping to sniff intriguing stuff along the old railroad bed as the river roared alongside our path. Something on the ground caught Steve’s eye: Two twenty-dollar bills! Without hesitation, Steve handed the cash to me and said, “This is for Bernese rescue.” Steve is a dedicated Berner Inc. volunteer and generous donor, so

it was no surprise that his “strike” in the mountains was given away to the dogs.

The sun began to go down and so did two tired but happy Berners. No doubt they dreamed about their mountain dog adventure on the car ride home.

The Faces of BERNER, Inc. Anya Wittenborg, Clerk

Honestly, haven’t you heard enough from

me? As rescue chair for the club from 2004 through 2012, I’ve been haranguing you all for quite a few years now! But why stop now? We want to be sure that our club members understand that BERNER, Inc. is an integral part of the club and, to that end, the board members are introducing (or re-introducing!) ourselves.

I got my first Berner, a 4 ½ year old boy, in 1987. He got me involved in obedience and introduced me to some great friends! I joined the BMDCNV a few years later, figuring that the club would point me in the right direction when the time came to get another Berner. When Max died at 10 ½, I took in a foster Dobe and got involved with Doberman Rescue. In 2004, when the BMDCNV was looking for a new rescue chair, it seemed like a natural fit so I signed up. In 2006, the board of the BMDCNV began to discuss how the rescue and education work of the club might benefit from being organized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable corporation. Following a vote of the BMDCNV membership, this reorganization was achieved in July of 2008. Among other things, it allows us to get discounted services from a number of vets and also means that your donations to BERNER, Inc. are tax-deductible.

Fast forward a few years (and dozens and dozens of dogs)! Linda Decelles, with the able assistance of her husband, Gib Otten, has taken over as rescue chair for the club. While Linda and Gib are in charge of the hands-on, day-to-day rescue work: responding to calls and emails and dealing with dogs, all board members meet regularly in an effort to: (1) engage more volunteers to help with rescue efforts and to educate the public about responsible acquisition and care of Berners, (2) assist in fundraising, (3) ensure that BERNER, Inc. is being fiscally responsible compliant with the requisite state and federal regulations. I encourage any of our club members who would like to help, whether it be fostering, fundraising, graphic design for promotional materials, legal assistance or whatever, to contact me.

What do I do when I’m not working for BERNER, Inc.? It’s pretty boring. I grew up on a farm in Massachusetts and attended school and college here as well. I was married briefly and operated a small air charter service for a few years. For more years than I care to say, I’ve worked as a paralegal for a huge law firm (with multiple offices on both coasts and in London and Hong Kong). The work has been interesting but somehow the hours and stress seem to increase yearly. How does that happen? Now that Linda and Gib have taken on the lion’s share of the rescue work, I hope to have a bit more time to spend with the dogs and the people I love!

The Shelley Tyre Outstanding Service Award honors someone whose service and contributions to the club and/or the breed has been exceptional. Formerly named the Kennel Ration or Gaines Good Sportsmanship Award it is now named in honor of club member, Shelley Tyre who unexpectedly passed away in March 1999. The Shelley Award is given annually to a member who has given outstanding service to our club. The membership nominates a club member in good standing, who has made an extra special contribution to the club either recently, in the past or on a regular and consistent basis. Club members send their recommendations for the award recipient to the Secretary with a short paragraph on why they believe the nominee deserves the award. The Board then takes into consideration all the recommendations and decides on the recipient. The only two restrictions are that the award may not go to a previous recipient or to any Officer or Director while they are serving. The award is presented at the annual meeting. Nominations for 2013 should be sent to the BMDCNV Secretary, Patricia Buickerood at [email protected] no later than February 1, 2014.

“Cooper”10-19-07 to 10-25-13

We enjoyed our walks and he would roll around like a goofball with people always smiling or laughing at his antics. His tongue was the longest I had ever seen and that made him even more special to me. I am devastated. I will always love and miss him. I’m sure he will find Winston and Katie at the Bridge and be running free and rolling to his hearts content now. Sweet Dreams Coop!
