You probably saw in the news last month that Kosair Charities has filed a lawsuit against Norton Healthcare, asking the court to require Norton to give us a better accounting of how they use the millions of dollars we donate every year. In the meantime and to show our good faith, we put money we would have given them this year – more than $6 million – into an escrow account for safekeeping.

We know that you share our goal of making sure that the care of children at Kosair Children’s Hospital, which is operated by Norton, is the absolute best it can be. But without the documentation we would expect from Norton, we simply don’t have any way of knowing, or proving to our donors, how the money has been used – whether Norton is using it to advance the quality of care children get at the hospital, or simply dropping it into their general budget and using it for other purposes. Kosair Charities continues to have tremendous appreciation and admiration for the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff who take care of the youngsters at Kosair Children’s Hospital. And this lawsuit will not affect in any way our other commitment to the health and well-being of children in Kentuckiana. But if we are to preserve our reputation as the children’s best friend in the region, we have to be responsible when it comes to our donors’ money. And when we couldn’t get Norton to give us a proper accounting, we felt we had to go to court. We also believe that Norton is exploiting the Kosair brand, using it beyond what is allowed by our agreement with them, and that could hurt our good name.

in our community during the Kentucky Derby Festival. Our Circus roadblocks began before the Festival; the Pegasus Parade Float Preview Party was well attended and I’m sure helped us win the Grand Marshal’s Award; we had great participation in the Pegasus Parade; photos of the Kosair Charities float were featured in social media by one television station; we had live TV coverage of our float and units during the parade; the Kosair Charities initiative to end child abuse made headlines during this time; our Charities board members represented us at several Derby events and Facebook buzzed with photos of Shriners and their families enjoying Derby Festival activities. All of this exposure illustrates to the community that Shriners and our mission of helping children is relevant. Thanks to all of you who participated, shared photos and represented us so well!

Just after Derby, we made our annual pilgrimage to Pigeon Forge, TN to attend the Kerbela Funfest. We had nearly 70 Nobles and ladies attend, which is the largest group in many years. Thanks to Noble Hubert Huffman for arranging the housing and to Ill. Sir Joe Myers and Lady Phyllis for providing the outstanding hospitality. As always, the Nobles and ladies of Kosair extended themselves in friendship, helping where needed to make certain the event was a success. I trust that everyone enjoyed the trip and hope that you all have some good memories to share for years to come.

On Friday, May 16th, we honored

our Past Potentates and their ladies with a dinner, short program and entertainment. The Boat Club and Past Masters Unit both moved their meetings to that night which added greatly to our attendance and fellowship. The Divan was privileged to attend the Oleika Potentate’s Ball on the 17th and represent Kosair at Shrine Hospital Days at the Lexington Unit on the 18th. We are indeed proud to have Ill. Sir Kirk Carter as Chairman of the Board of Governors as he leads during a time of transition. The partnership with the University of Kentucky continues to take shape and move forward and we know that Ill. Sir Carter is dedicated to the ultimate success of Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

Congratulations to Noble Pat Miller on another successful “Magic & Wonder” show, benefitting Kosair Charities. This is a huge undertaking that has raised thousands of dollars for Kosair Kids® over the past several years. Noble Pat and Lady Janice work very hard to make each new show better than before and they always succeed. What wonderful entertainment they bring to Louisville each year.

The month of June is filled with activities and opportunities for more fun and fellowship. On June 2nd is our annual Golf & Fishing Stag at Eagle Creek, hosted by the Kosair Golf Club and the Boat Club hosts their “Christmas in July” event on Friday, June 6th at the Temple. We will have a Kosair Family Picnic at the Bullitt County Shrine Club on Saturday, June

14th. Bring your children and grandchildren to enjoy good food, live music, clowns, activities and more. This is also Flag Day and John Phillips, Commander of the Kosair Legion of Honor will be giving a presentation on “Old Glory.” Watch your email for details and please mark your calendar for what I know will be a wonderful event.

The remodeling of our new facility continues to move forward under the leadership of Planning Committee Chairman and Assistant Rabban, Steve Hueston. Our team meets regularly and soon we will be posting more photos of the progress to the Kosair website. Stay tuned!

In closing, I want to say that I appreciate all of you who continue to contribute to our success. We are fortunate that in the midst of change and distraction, we are still able to work together, share fun and laughter and fulfill our mission of helping kids. I think my motto of “Strength & Fury” fits us well.

Lawsuit cont. from pg.1

We expect there’s going to be some legal wrangling before Norton finally realizes that it only makes sense to show us how they use our charitable dollars. We hope these issues can be resolved soon. Stay tuned for updates.

Legion of Honor

I can’t believe that half of this year is upon us….and yet, The Kosair Legion of Honor drives on. The Memorial Day Ceremony at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery was represented by our Honor Guard. We take this special Monday in May to memorize our Fallen Heroes and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. To these heroes and all veterans…we salute you!

By the time this issue of the Kosair Kolums reaches you, we would have commenced with the Kosair Legion of Honor Commander’s Ball on May 31st. I promise to have photos of this event in our next issue. The Legion of Honor Roadblock for the 2015 Kosair Shrine Circus will resume in late June. Hats off to Noble Neal Gabehart for his tireless efforts throughout each circus roadblock event. A few of our Nobles will be attending the El Hasa Temple Military Ball in June. Contact myself or other officers for date, time, and location.

For our newest members of Kosair Shrine Temple…If you are a veteran of any branch of the United States Armed Forces, we would like for you to join our “Band of Brothers”. We meet on the Third Tuesday of each month at 7pm. Come alittle early to enjoy in some camaraderie. It’s an Honor to belong to the Legion of Honor!

John Phillips, Commander

Kosair FunstersBy, Dennis (Gabby) Hardin

The Kosair Funsters unit welcomes the new Nobles and congratulates them for joining this wonderful organization. You will find various clubs and units to join. Take your time and visit each one. Take your time in picking one or two you might like to join as each club or unit meets on various nights of the month. Even though there are many different clubs and units, we all have something in common, and that is we do it for the “KIDS”, no matter the age. I know this might seem a little prejudice but I’m very fond of the Funsters unit. Our members entertain children of all ages. We visit the Kosair Children’s Hospital on the last Sunday of the month at 2 PM. We participate in many parades and other various

activities. Our main goal is to bring smiles and giggles to people of all ages from new born to a hundred and one!! If you’re thinking about joining the Funsters and you’re not sure on how to put make-up on, there are enough members to assist you in the art of make-up application and creating the perfect costume to fit your personality. We meet on the fourth Monday of the month at 7:30 PM in the basement right after the Unit Director’s meeting. Even if you’re not interested in joining at this time feel free to come to one of our meetings to see what we are all about. And then you might change your mind about joining the unit. Thank you to all of the members of the Funsters Unit that participated in the cake sale at the Friday night dinner. As the year moves forward there will be more Friday night dinners that we all need to assist with as it benefits our unit. And a BIG Thank You to the membership who bought the desserts and the raffle tickets supporting our cause.

And let’s give a big hand for the Funsters that participated in the past two parades. One was the Easter parade on Frankfort Ave. and the other was the Derby parade. We all had a good time and a nice turn out. The Easter parade weather was just beautiful! The Derby parade was a little cool but we all had a great time. There will be more parades coming up and other events so let’s all pitch in and make the rest of the year great and fantastic. Allan Bogard asked me, to say “Thank You all who assisted on the parade float.” It was many hours of putting it together and it came out pretty good. At the preview float presentation, which was held at the Kentucky Fairgrounds, there were many kids that came out along with their parents that were amazed on how everything looked. Well, it’s time for this clown to go and see what he can get into now! The Funsters hope you new Nobles come down to our meeting and see what we are all about. All are welcome. Remember, KEEPEM LAUGHING Dennis (GABBY) Hardin

Ceremonial Director’s StaffBy, Jon S. Dawson, Secretary

Nobles, is it just me or is this year flying by? May is gone & the Derby Festival events are over. Allan Bogard and his crew did another great job on the Pegasus Parade Float again this year. I hope you got the chance to attend the Derby Party at the Temple and/or the Potentate’s Day at the Races held at Churchill Downs. A great time was had by all at both events.

Speaking of our Potentate, Ill. Sir, Shawn Warren is supporting a Smoky Mountain Getaway Raffle which includes two nights stay in

a cabin/chalet, two tickets to Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede dinner, $300 in spending money & a loaded gift basket. Chances are just $5 each and are available at our monthly meetings. Winner will be drawn on October 25, 2014.

Our Roadblock Team, under the direction of Noble President and Roadblock Chairman, David Ruff, are doing another great job pounding the pavement collecting for the Circus. Will McKnight has already made it clear, based on his current pace, he is heading after the “King of the Road” title this year and from what we have seen so far, he just might earn it.

Speaking of roadblocks, as we move into the summer season the temperatures start to rise, and that blacktopped pavement gets even hotter than the “Sands” at our Ceremonials. Our roadblock team could use your help. The more Nobles we have on hand, the more lanes we can cover, and the more breaks we can take. We always have ice cold refreshments available for our team (water & soft drinks only, sorry). So if you can help out for at least one of our four June dates, slap on some sunscreen, grab you fez and come on out, it would be greatly appreciated. If roadblocks aren’t for you, how about helping out at a Buck-a-Line location or by selling a program ad or banner. Help us help the kids, by supporting the Kosair Circus.

Here are our two weekend roadblock dates for June – hope to see you there: Breckinridge & Dutchman’s on 6/20 from 5:00 PM to Dark and 6/21 from 10 AM – 2 PM Preston & Outer Loop on 6/27 from 5:00 PM to Dark and 6/28 from 10 AM – 2 PM

For our new Nobles, (or even some old ones) if you want to get more involved, we invite you to attend a Director’s Staff meeting. We meet the first Thursday each month, unless there is a conflict such as the Shrine Circus or Pegasus Parade. Our meetings start at 7:30 PM with social time before and after the meeting. Our next meeting will be on June 5, 2014.

Don’t forget to get your raffle tickets for the 1937 Ford Club Coupe giveaway for Kosair Charities this year. The Ceremonial Director’s Staff has committed to sell 100 raffle tickets again this year to support this cause. So next time you’re at a meeting plan on picking up a couple of tickets.

Oriental BandBy, Earl T. Arnett, Scribe

Es Selamu Aleikum

Greetings from the best Oriental Band in the Southeastern Shrine Oriental Band Association (SESOBA) for one more year. We just competed with other bands from the SESOBA and are a #1 band and our Drum Major or (Genie) is still the #1 Genie in the SESOBA. It was tough spending 5 days in Pensacola Beach, but someone has to do it.

We have been preparing for this competition or as we call it a “Hoedown”. We compete with Shrine Oriental Bands from

Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky and Louisiana.

Joe Graves, the Secretary & Treasurer or the Kosair Oriental Band has just been voted into the position of President of the SESOBA for this coming year. Joe makes the third Presidents we have in the Band. Earl Arnett and Chuck Strothman are the two past presidents we still have.

Our recent Easter Parade was longer than it had been according to our recent memory. We had to await two trains to pass during the parade and one at the end of the parade. However, a lot of kids were at the parade. We have to call this parade the most kid

friendly parade we have.

Last month I wrote about the Pegasus Parade. By the time you get this correspondence, the parade will have come and gone. Dawn Gee at Wave 3 is a big fan of the Oriental Band. Look up some of her articles and video of the Pegasus Parade. Not only for the Oriental Band but all unites and clubs in the parade will be featured.

We meet every Monday night at 8 PM. We gather around 6:30 to 7:00 PM. Come see us. I does not cost to look or even to join. Plenty of Camels milk available.

See Yu……….

We work with the school’s Resource Officer and have provided clothing to be kept on hand at the school in case a child has and “accident” and soil their clothing and needs a change of clothes. We adopted a family from La Grange Elementary school who was in need at Christmas and provided clothing and toys for their children and a gift card of food to the parents.

The club is having a gun “raffle” for a Smith & Wesson 38 special with an engraved barrel to be given away on June 13th at the Friday Night dinner at Kosair. Ticket are $5.00 and can be purchased from any member or

On July 5th we are cosponsoring are car show with Barnet Barnett, ”BARNEY’S CAR FEST” It will be at the Cherry House in Lagrange, Ky. We will also have a booth and will be raffling off an aluminum racing jack and a country ham. If you or your company would like to place an add on our T-shirt for $100.00 please contact Gene Crady 502-222-1717. Come out for a great event.

Who was he?He was the son of Pedaiah and the grandson of King Jeconiah, King of Judah, who was carried into Babylonian captivity. Returning to Jerusalem, he was instrumental in the beginning of the Temple’s rebuilding. This effort floundered and was to remain dormant for fifteen years.

He returned to Babylon where he took part in the famous contest on the power of wine, kings, and women, which is depicted in one of the Commandery orders. He won the contest by saying “Truth beareth away the victory.” He then returned to Jerusalem and the work of rebuilding the second Temple.

“TO THE COLORS”No place for intrusion is which was forlornCling close to the colors in which it was born.Thirteen stripes-the RED, White, and the Blue,Lord or Lord what a beautiful sight.Fifty States on a field of blue, Shed their light for a precious view.

Rejoice in our duty of guarding its beauty. This is OLD GLORY, the flag of flags,Upholding your spirit whenever it sags. This is the emblem of Liberty. This is the soul of a nation free. This is the guideline that carries us through.Flying it always as RED, White, and Blue.

Nomads

Nomads and other Nobles,

Now on to the more serious part of being a Nomads. We have volunteered to stand watch at a fallen (deceased) brother’s Noble’s home (outside, in the driveway or at the picnic table, etc.) while the family is at the funeral home so no one tries to break into their home while they are gone. If you need this service, call the office and ask Betty or Laurie to get in touch with us.

We have been asked to help Noble Bob Beatty with the Kosair Charities Car giveaway. This year it is a 37 Ford Club Coupe, tickets are $10.00. We have been asked to help with the car and ticket sales. This is a great way to meet new Nobles, plus a lot of other very interesting people. Did I tell you that they have a great big party when they give the car away and every one that buys a ticket is welcome (must have stub).. They will have free finger food, a silent auction on lots of cool stuff. We went last year and danced to the Monarchs all night long. I hear they will be there again this year. This in itself is worth the price of admittance.

Did I tell you that all moneys collected goes to support child organ transplants? So when you buy a ticket you are a winner

because you helped a child. Anyone interested in helping with the car please email me [email protected]; put Kosair Charities car in the subject, we can all ways use help.

The Nomads are moving forward and would love to have you join us at the Shrine Temple and on the road trips we are going to make. Watch the event calendar and figure out how you can get involved.

We are working on a web page just for the car so you and I can keep up with where it is and where it is going coming soon hope it is up by the time this is published.

Thanks for reading my articleNoble Alan Whitlow

At our May meeting we had, as our speaker, Louise Cecil, the owner of a costume business, she was an interesting person and a great speaker. If you ever need a costume go and see her, she will outfit you in the finest.

The Club is looking forward to our Bring and Buy Auction, this event to be held at Kosair Shriners and is always a huge success. We always have delicious food, made by our Executive Board and lots of items to bid on. So come to the event, with a pocket full of

Transportation UnitBy, Roger Hines, Unit Secretary

As I usually do, after a new group of Masons have crossed the burning sands to become

members of Kosair Shrine, is to explain what the Transportation Unit is and what we do.

This Unit doesn’t road block, or drive motorcycles, or funny cars, or act as clowns, or bowl or march in parades. Simply put, the Transportation Unit take children to medical facilities as needed.

This is a free service offered to children who would not, either because of distance or economics, get the medical help they need. Just two questions are asked, “Where do we need to go and what time do we need to be there”. All children we transport must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and we have an age limit of 18 years. Race, gender or religion is never an issue. Also, this is a scheduled service.

Some of the driver requirements we have are: you must be a member of Kosair, have a clean

money so that you can get the many bargains, that this event has to offer. This is always an event which is well attended and a big money maker for the Kids of Kosair Charities.

As we look forward, to the Autumn season – we are making plans for the Autumn Style Show, which will be held on October 19th, 2014, always a great event both in having fun and making money. There will be various accessories booths and other items for sale. Also, we still have a couple

more cake sales - “happiness is homemade”, or so they say, so dip your thumb, into the flour and make some goodies, for the cake sales.

Remember, we do not meet in July or August so enjoy the summer months, be safe and have fun. “See you in September”.

Always remember, the rooster may crow, but it’s the hen who delivers the goods!!!! B. Johnson

driving record (no drug or alcohol violations) and be retired or semi-retired. If you have an interest to help kids our monthly meetings are the held the 3rd Wednesday of the month, 10:30AM at Kosair in the dining area. Come visit; the coffee is free and the tales are beyond belief.

Concerning our trips load in the March 19th through April 15th time frame, we made 11 runs and drove 3153 miles for an average of 287 miles per trip. The longest was of 515 miles and the shortest was 225 miles (5 of these).

And since Derby 2015 is only eleven months from now I’ll pass along a gem of wisdom my deceased Father passed on to me. “Son, remember, there are a lot more horses a_ _ then horses in this world”. Until next month, Roger Hines, Unit Secretary
