Welcome to this first look at Choristers Guild’s new handbell and handchime music for fall 2013. We’re very excited to share exciting new re-sources for bell and chime choirs of all sizes and abilities, ranging from level 1 to level 4 and from 12 bells to 7 octaves!

In addition to the fall 2013 handbell CD, this booklet also includes a Bonus CD featuring stunning Choristers Guild music for choir with handbells. The Bonus CD offers something for everyone, ranging from unison to SATB choirs and from a few bells to 5 octaves. The contents of the Bonus CD are listed on pages 4 and 5, and the disc includes PDF sample music pages.

Holy Manna (A Merry Mallet Melody) – arr. Susan E. Geschke Level 2

Bursting with energy, this arrangement is played entirely with mallets but remains rhythmically easy with only a sprinkling of eighth notes. In addition to malleting the bells, ringers click their mallets together for added percussive joy. The suggested tempo gives the piece real vitality, but it can also be effectively played a bit slower. The piece may be also rung entirely on handchimes, substituting a percussion instrument for the mallet clicks. The alternate title, A Merry Mallet Melody, makes this setting an excellent choice for secular, sacred, or festival use.

Exultant Variations (Afdahl Variations) – Michael Helman Level 3

Commissioned to honor Lee Afdahl, this is a set of six variations on an original theme based upon Lee’s name. The variations use numerous handbell techniques such as martellato, echo, malleting and thumb damp. The variations go from major to minor and use various meters including a rollicking one in 6/8. Starting simply and growing in movement and energy, this setting of When Morning Gilds the Skies is perfect for any time in worship or con-cert when ringers are in short supply. The opening is simple and hymn-like, evoking the picture of the morning sunrise; while the middle, malleted section adds a lively and vibrant contrast. Special consideration has been given to accommodate the limited number of ringers by giving time to pick up mallets or to pick up an additional bell in the bass line.

Peace in Our Time – Cathy Moklebust Level 3

This large, original work for handbells and solo violin includes three movements, each based on a quote by Mother Teresa, Mohandas Gandhi, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The first movement, entitled, “Compassion,” is tender and full of feeling. The second movement, entitled “Satyagraha” (a word referring to the resistance to tyranny through mass civil disobedience), is vigorous and driving, using much martellato and mallet work. The final movement is entitled “Tribute,” is steady and stately, and is reminiscent of a freedom march led by Dr. King, coming from afar and gaining more and more momentum. This work will be an appropriate addition for any service or concert where the focus is on peace, hope, remembrance, or tribute.

Set in the keys of A minor and D minor, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen begins with alternating measures in 4/4 and 6/8, and features a treble ostinato lending interest to the melody line in the first stanza. Optional parts for bass and drum set add uniqueness and pizzazz. As the piece progresses, a rhythmic bass pattern is introduced using complex jazz chords and a syncopated melody in the treble clef. An acceler-ated tempo leads ringers into a new key with much dynamic movement. Ringers will enjoy the challenge of ringing this fast-paced and energetic piece.

When in Our Music God Is Glorified – arr. Cathy Moklebust Level 2+

This glorious festival hymn arrangement begins with a fanfare introduction, followed by a straightforward setting of the first stanza, sung in unison. The second stanza features the choir in 4 parts, accompanied by the bells and organ only. The brass and timpani join in on the third stanza, which features a malleted or plucked bass line in the handbells, creating a march-like feel. A fanfare interlude precedes the majestic fourth stanza, which features a soaring soprano descant, and a brief choral “Amen.” Perfect for worship, concert, or festival use.
