    Happy Thanksgiving From Your......

Potentate and First LadyFinal Thoughts from 2020

This has been a year for the record books for sure. Patty and I had big plans for the year 2020. It started out nice…Our ball was fantastic in February (Patty said she felt like a princess). Then came COVID-19.

While trying to keep Hella open, Patty was diagnosed with cancer. By the Grace of God and the help from everyone through prayers, love and support, she has made great strides.

The Divan learned a lot about the running of the Temple and all the Governmental red tape. I had many conversations with Most Worshipful Paul Underwood about reopening the Shrine, but we came to an agreement and were allowed to reopen with reasonable restrictions.

Parades! Oh, how I love a Parade! But you know the story about that as well.

Patty and I did have a good year despite the downfalls. We truly wish the 2021 Divan and their ladies well and sincerely hope for a much better year in 2021.

We would like to thank all the staff, the Aides, the Directors Staff, the 101’s, the Decorating Committee, and everyone else who helped out at the Temple. I would especially like to thank Illustrious Sir Wayne Osborne Recorder and Past Potentate, for all that he has done to keep the Temple alive.

I may be out of office as of January 21, 2021 but certainly will still be active. Serving on the Divan the past five years was a learning experience and very rewarding. It has been my pleasure and honor to serve Hella in this capacity. I truly love the Shrine, and the children and families we serve. Hella will always be near and dear to my heart. Patty and I love you all.

Chief Rabban I want to start out by saying a large THANK YOU to the Nobles of Hella Shrine for voting me in as your Potentate for 2021. It is my honor to serve you for this year. I want to let you know that Santa’s Magical Variety Show was a great success even though we only had about 100 adults and children in the audience. Hella Shrine made over $30,000.00. Everyone thought the magician was awesome. Our snack bar did great plus we only had one person complain about paying $5.00 for parking. Everyone paid to park including your Divan. Imperial Sir Jim Smith’s motto is “Having Fun in 2021” - that is what we plan on doing. We start with the Installation of Officers on the 21st of January. Then we need all elected Officers of our

Units and Shrine clubs to be at Hella on the 23rd of January at 12 noon. We will serve lunch then go straight into our Potentate’s Seminar. “Having Fun in 2021” will include, in April, a picnic and the Potentate’s Golf Tournament. In June we have TSA that will be in San Antonio, Tx, and followed up by our Imperial Session in Houston, Tx. In August we are planning on having Brave Combo perform with tickets going on sale around March. Also in August we are planning a Potentate’s Bus Trip to Bran-son, Mo. These are just a few things we have on our 2021 Calendar. Just watch for the dates in your Camels Calf.

Once again, thank you for your support.

Assistant Rabban - Chief Rabban ElectIt has been an honor to serve Hella this past year. I appreciate the trust you have placed in me and have tried to live up to the responsibility. It was a difficult year as we were shut down for much of the year due to COVID-19. Despite the challenges, we have tried to keep moving forward. In the coming year, we need to bring the fun and fellowship back to Hella. As we try and put 2020 behind us, we need to find a way to have activities that are not only fun, but safe and responsible. It is not the gathering at the Shrine that brings us together, but the fraternal love that binds us to one another.

Although we had to cancel the All-Unit Christmas Party, we had the Christmas Tree Extravaganza at the December Stated Meeting. I would like to personally thank the Nobles and units that donated trees

this year. It was a lot of fun and everyone I talked to that night was excited to do it again next year. Despite a relatively small crowd at the meeting, we still raised $1,170.00 for Hella with the Extravaganza. Now that more people understand the concept, lets keep it going and do it up big in 2021. Hopefully this can become a new tradition for Hella.

There was some talk around the Temple about holding the officers over for another year. As a result of the pandemic and subse-quent shutdowns, I did not accomplish a fraction of what I wanted to in 2020. Some of this was beyond my control, but perhaps I could have done more during these trying times. I’m certain that if I had it to do over, I could find a way to accomplish more of my goals in 2020. But in life you do not get do overs. You live with the consequences of your actions and move forward. Hopefully you learn something in the process. That is why I did not support keeping the 2020 officers in place for another year. Although I would like the opportunity to prove that I could accomplish my membership goals, it is not about my goals, it is about what is good for the Temple. I believe it is better for the Temple if we advance and move forward. 2021 will be another challenging year. Despite recently announced vaccines the pandemic is still upon us. Hopefully we can find a path to resume our normal activities and bring fun and fellowship back to the Shrine. I look forward to the day when I can greet each of you in person with a handshake and a hug. But until that time, be safe and responsible. There are Nobles who are still fighting this terrible Corona Virus.

Thank you for electing me as Chief Rabban and I promise that I will continue to do my best to warrant the trust you have in-stilled in me.

    High Priest and ProphetGreeting Nobles,

Wishing you all the utmost safety and good health! The Hospital and Fund Raising meeting will remain suspended this month, with the Vaccine for Covid-19 on the horizon and being distrib-uted, hopefully some level of normalcy will prevail as a result during this year, and allow Hella to get back to the business at hand.

Steve Lang, the newly elected High Priest and Prophet, will communicate his intent for the future Hospital and Fund-Raising meeting schedule under his watchful eye in the February Camel’s Calf.

I would like to express my appreciation to the Nobility that participated in the voting of Officers at the December Stated Meeting. It’s my privilege and honor to represent Hella as Assistant Rabban and I will perform the duties of office to the best of my ability. Please step forward when asked to participate in our efforts of encouraging new members, welcoming those new members and their families to their Hella Shrine family!

We continue to encourage each of you to be safe and adhere to social distancing when possible. If you are in a high-risk category, I strongly urge you to wear the protection during any meetings at the Temple.

If you don’t feel comfortable within a group of 10+, certainly stay home and stay safe.

    Upcoming Meetings and Events:

‡ Hospital Meetings are suspended through January 2021, watch the Camels Calf for updates on Hospital activity.

‡ Fund Raiser Committee Meetings are suspended through January 2021, watch the Camels Calf for updates on Fund-Raiser activity.

‡ Hella Stated meeting is January 21st 2021 (6:30 dinner, 7:30 meeting time.) Installation of Officers for the ensuing year will be conducted during this meeting.

‡ Superbowl Party on February 7th has been Cancelled

Shrine Units and Clubs, please notify the Recorders office of meeting start-up with date/place/time. The office will ensure the communication goes out in the “Happening at Hella” distribution to the Nobility. If the membership does NOT know you are meeting, attendance will be very minimal…

All Nobles must continue to exhibit an Ambassador role when communicating our purpose and activities to Master Ma-sons within the appendage bodies we attend. This is VERY important!

We are HELLA, and we serve the greatest purpose in support of our Shriner Hospitals and your Temple.

Please stand up and be counted when called upon to lead or participate.

Be safe, diligent and stay healthy!

    Nate FullerAssistant Rabban (elect)

    Oriental GuideGreetings Nobles!

We’re not done with the pandemic, but we ARE done with 2020! Hopefully, with the vaccine, we are on the downhill side of all this! We will need to persevere the first part of 2021, but I think we may get back to “more normal” by June or July.

Unfortunately we will not be having IHOP Day this year, at least not in the way we have in the past. We will not be at the different locations welcoming patrons. All monies will be collected by donations solicited at the table by the IHOP staff.

We have some fundraising ideas planned for the first half of the year, and hopefully we can go through with them all. I know we’ve all been a little disconnected from our normal routine at Hella. We’ve had some extra free time that we don’t normally have.

I hope we can all get back to what we do to help the kids of our hospitals though. They need us to get right back at it! I have some fundraising events planned and I’ll definitely need some help with them. Our Nobility and their Ladies always come thru too!

If you have any ideas for fundraising please let me know! I’m open to any and all ideas! I would love to be able to make up for some of the fundraising monies we lost out on in 2020.

Thank you again for all you do for Hella and the hospitals! I appreciate all your efforts!

    In the fraternity,

Steve LangHigh Priest & Prophet - ElectHella Shrine

Hella Clowns Well this might be the last Clown news I write, but we are in great hands. We did have a parade, and helped at the Santa’s Magic Show, a great way to end the year. I hope to see as many as possible at the New Year’s Eve Party. We have a lot of things in the planning to make up for this year. First is Mid-Winter in Wichita Falls, then TSA in San Antonio, and then Imperial in Houston. Hopefully a parade or two in between. I miss dodging tortillas and jello shots. 2021 can not get here fast enough.

    From the Treasurer’s Chest

    HAPPY NEW YEAR ! !

Congratulations to the newly elected Divan 2021, with Illustrious-Elect Mike Hall, Chief Rabban-Elect Nick Fehrenbach, Assistant Rabban-Elect Nate Fuller and High Priest & Prophet-Elect Steve Lang. Also congrats are due for our new Oriental Guide-Elect Casey Bostain. Illustrious Sir Wayne Os-borne remains in his position as recorder as do I as your Treasurer. I want to

thank the Nobility for their confidence in me as your Divan tackles the hard issues presented by COVID. Thanks are in order for the work that almost Past-Illustrious John Krodel and his Lady Patty for their work in keeping us moving forward in 2020. Installation of officers is scheduled for January 21. As we look to the future, let’s take a quick glance at our past. We got to participate in the Rock-wall Christmas Parade and it sure felt good to be out there again. Although we didn’t get to have our All-Unit Christmas Party, it sure felt like one after the December Stated Meeting when we bid on all the trees and had a good (socially distanced) time. We raised almost $2,000.00 for that event alone and around $7,500 for our Shotgun Raffle that same night. The Holiday Santa Magi-cal Show, although lightly attended because of Covid, still raised over $30,000.00 for Hella. The Children’s Christmas Party hosted by the Clowns was sadly cancelled. At the time of this article, the plan is to present Hella’s 2021 Budget to the Nobility for approval at the January Stated Meeting. Other pieces to the budget had not been calculated preventing us from completing it for the December meeting. As stated to the Nobility at the December meeting, there are no plans for asking the Nobility to draw additional monies from reserves in the budget. We have reduced our budgeted operating reserves over $200,000.00 from last year. I will not say that we will not draw from the reserves, but only if we have to. It all depends if we can open up the rentals and being able to operate Hella at 100% after the first quarter. As of the end of No-vember, 82% of the Nobility had paid their dues. At the December meeting, we voted to suspend 200 members for nonpayment. It makes funding operations and expenses at Hella easier when the Nobility pay their dues timely and we’re not relying totally on catering to keep things going. As will be customary, look to the bulletin board outside the double doors in the middle of the ballroom before each meeting to get an overview of our present financial position. It is now 2021 and your 2021 dues are due. Please let us know if we can assist if you’re experiencing financial problems.

At Hella we strive to see to your safety at our meetings and our events. Talk to you next month. May brotherly love prevail, and peace and harmony be our chief strength and support.

    Be Safe, Be Healthy.

Daughters of the NileGreetings from Shalman Temple No. 90, Daughters of the Nile.

Happy Holidays! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and start to the new year. While the holidays may have been a little different for families this year, I hope you were all able to enjoy some time with family and friends. As we head into 2021, our hearts and minds are hopeful for a better year, and an end to the Covid craziness. 2020 was definitely not the year we all had planned, but as we come out on the other side we are hopeful for better days and a return to “normal”.

Coming up at Shalman we have our official visit of the Daughters of the Nile Supreme Queen on January 7. We won’t be having a banquet as in years past, but will have our ceremonial as always. Our normal monthly session in Janu-ary will be on the 6th and will be a virtual Zoom call. Stay safe, stay well, keep your head up and a smile on your face – this too shall pass.

My Fellow Nobles, It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that we have cancelled the 2021 East-West Shrine Bowl™ due to challenges presented by COVID-19. This decision was extremely difficult to make. Af-ter consulting with our key partner – the NFL – along with countless leaders within the intercollegiate athletics com-munity and the professional and college scouting commu-nity, we came to the conclusion that the risks were too great for the upcoming game. Once the NFL cancelled the Pro Bowl earlier this month, it became even more clear that we would need to take a one-year pause. Although it is heart-breaking for us as Shriners, I

know you will all agree that the safety and well-being of our athletes and attendees is our overriding concern. Bob Roller, our executive director of the East-West Shrine Bowl, has been working on this issue for months. “It’s terribly disappointing to have to cancel this year’s game, but there are so many issues involved with bringing in approximately 130 players and 25 NFL coaches from every corner of the United States and Canada,” he said. “It’s difficult enough currently for these college teams to provide some sort of a bubble during the regular season, but our game occurs after all players have gone home for the holidays and presented too many potential issues for this one year.” Players eligible for the 2021 game will still receive formal invitations and become a part of the historical 96-year tradition. We all look forward to when this pandemic is over and we can get back to doing all the things we love, includ-ing this well-loved Shriners tradition, the East-West Shrine Bowl.

    FUNDRAISING-FUNDRAISING-FUNDRAISING

This is the primary message that still needs to be conveyed this year to ensure success, our Nobility must get involved! New Nobles, you are the future, and we hope to see you at all our scheduled events!

It is important that all Nobles grasp the opportunity to get involved and volunteer to help, if available. This does not necessarily mean the day of the event. There are a lot of needs prior to the actual event day. We need participation! This is where a majority of the money in fundraising events is made. It is very important that volunteers help communicate to persons or businesses of our needs for each event.

The Fundraising Committee Meetings (in person) remain suspended through January 2021.

Below is a list of fundraising events we currently had on the calendar for January 2021:Flea Market/Trade Days - January 30th, 2021 (Cancelled)East West Football Game - January 23, 2021 (Cancelled)

We all have a responsibly as members, as we took the same obligation when we be-came Shriners. Your opinion matters a great deal! Get involved, voice your opinion and be proud of what your Temple can achieve through your support!

    Parades

Parades are the Backbone of Our Fraternity, and a window of Opportunity to gain support!

At this time these are no Parades for Hella Shrine scheduled; as always, watch this space! Everett Warner Marshall

Dear Fellow Nobles, Being a Shriner has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I love our Fraternity and all the opportunities it affords me: To be part of a selfless, compassionate brotherhood; to improve the world and our home communities; and to make incredible differences in the lives of children. And through it all, to have fun! Sharing these experiences with other good men is why we work so hard to increase our membership numbers. So I’m especially pleased to let you know that the all-new, revamped BeAShrinerNow.com website has launched, making it easier than ever for all of us to bring new members into our fraternity. Our Shriners International marketing and membership teams have worked hard to make this tool attractive, ef-fective and very easy to use. In addition, we’ve aimed to train at least one Noble from each Temple on the ins and outs of the new website, so if you have questions, there should be someone in your Temple who can help. Together as brothers, we improve lives and communities, and we enjoy having fun together all the while. I can’t wait to start using this amazing new website to help us spread the word and bring even more men of good character into our Fraternity.

    Yours in the faith,

Hella Flying FezzesCongratulations to the newly elected 2021 Divan! The Flying Fezzes will be always at the ready for soon to be Illustrious Sir Mike Hall to assist in whatever way we can. We participated in the Rockwall Christmas Parade and had a great time! The Flying Fezzes also participated in the Xmas Tree fund raiser at Hella. The theme of our tree of course was….planes. The four foot lit tree had airplane ornaments and even a large ape on top of the tree. Our gifts were various models and flying objects. Congrats to Diane Moore for getting the winning ticket. At the time of this writing, plans are being made to a meeting in January on our normal meeting day, which is the Third Saturday of the month. More details will be announced when that develops. ur meetings definitely involve airplanes as most members are pilots although that is not a requirement to join and all Nobles are welcome. The Flying Fezzes unit was originally formed in 1976 for the express purpose of providing air transportation for burned or crippled children to Shrine Hospitals. Our flights with the burned, crippled children have stopped, but our mission as Flying Fezzes has evolved to providing and securing appropriate transportation for burned or crippled children to a Shrine Hospital for treatment as requested.

All Nobles who would like to be in any Parade where Shriners participate, come join us with a Hella shirt of any kind and your fez to ride the plane float. The dues of the Unit are twenty-five ($25.00) dollars per year. Regular stated meetings of the Unit are normally held on the third (3rd) Saturday of the month. Come join us. Membership Committee The Membership Committee meets the first Wednesday of the month and we hope we will have our next meeting on August 5, 2020. We are always looking for motivated Nobles and their Ladies to promote Hella Shrine. The purpose of the Membership Committee is to promote the Shrine and there are many opportunities to help. We need Ambassadors to promote the Shrine in the Blue Lodges. We also are trying to put together a phone committee to reach out to Nobles to invite them to come down and enjoy the fun and fellowship that is the Shrine. We also need people to help with some of the membership events that are coming up. If you have an idea on how we can promote the Shrine, we would love to hear them. So come on down to the Shrine and join us on the Membership Committee. We will not have a light meal at 6:30 as in the past, the meeting starts at 7:00 pm on the first Wednesday of each month.

  • Page 21The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas

TOGETHER WE CAN grow our fraternity and philanthropy

A friend? A family member? A co-worker? Membership Growth If every current Shriner resolves to recruit or restore “Just One” noble to

Hella Temple, the brotherhood’s ranks will swell tremendously!

  • Page 22 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas

Are you committed to membership? The three “R”s of membership development are recruitment, retention, and

restoration. As Shriners, we all have accountability to our fraternity. It becomes our responsibility to educate others about Shriners International, create more

Shriners, recruit more Freemasons, and refer more patients to Shriners Hospital for Children. These concepts are critical to the future success of our organizations. Shriners International has developed a new approach to membership development

changing the membership paradigm with the introduction of a new referral program. With this new referral functionality, current nobles can now directly

refer names of friends, family members and acquaintances who they feel would make good Shriners.

    We’re Counting on you!

    REFER A GOOD MAN TODAY!

Dear Noble Sirs, At the Imperial Session, we saw the unveiling of new Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder’s “Just One” campaign to increase Shriner membership. A simple but powerful idea drives this initiative: If every current Shriner commits to recruiting or restoring “just one” noble to his temple, the ranks of our brotherhood will swell tremendously. In order to build enthusiasm for the Just One initiative and keep it going, we are instituting a multi-level program for recognizing and rewarding top-line signers in the creation/restoration process for their successful efforts bringing in new members or restoring suspended members. These are:• Level 1 – Upon creation or restoration of one member, the top-line signer will receive a postcard and Just One pin from Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder.• Level 2 – Upon bringing in two members, the top-line signer will be listed in the Shriner Magazine.• Level 3 – With three new creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a certificate of appreciation and a letter of commendation from Imperial Sir Sowder.• Level 4 – After five creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a personal phone call from the Imperial Potentate.• Level 5 – Top-line signers responsible for 10 additional Shriner brothers will receive a special invitation to attend a Just One VIP reception with the Imperial Divan at the 2020 Imperial Session. Along with these points of recognition, your temple will probably also want to honor your brothers who embrace the challenge of helping grow local membership. As a record-keeping aid, “Just One” prospect cards were presented at Imperial Session, and will be made available to temples to share with their members. If your temple has members using the cards, you will either need to assign someone to collect them and enter the information into the WebFez MDS, or have the member enter the information himself. (https://webfez.shrinenet.org/nextstep). If you have any questions about the Just One program, please contact the Membership Office at Shriners Internation-al by email at [email protected] or call (813) 281-0300.
