课程简介 Introduction of the lesson In this lesson, you will learn how to give greetings and farewells in Chinese. You
will apply what you learned in the first lesson about the pinyin system into real
life conversation practice. In addition, you will learn the basic Chinese sentence
structure and write Chinese characters that are relevant to these texts. Finally
you will practice to pronounce four simple finals in four different tones.
Before the lesson, there is a brief introduction of the names of four persons,
which will appear in the texts conversation:
wāng míng xiǎo míng
王明 昵称 (nickname): 小明
zhāng hóng xiǎo hóng
张红 昵称 (nickname): 小红
David dà wèi
中文名(Chinese translation name): 大卫
Mary mǎ lì

You will use the following words in this lesson. Please study the pinyin, the
Chinese characters and the translation carefully and then listen to the
pronunciation of the words. It is very important to learn the Chinese characters
by heart as they will be used in several parts of this lesson.

Please see the following conversation between xiǎo míng and xiǎo hóng. Start by
reading the pinyin a couple of times to understand what the conversation is
about. Then listen to the audio file several times. Next read the Chinese
characters several times. And the last step is to listen to the audio file while
looking at the Chinese characters.

小明: 你好!
xiǎo hóng ní hǎo.
小红: 你好!
xiǎo míng ní hǎo ma?
小明: 你好吗?
xiǎo hóng wǒ hén hǎo nǐ ne?
小红: 我很好,你呢?
xiǎo míng wǒ hén hǎo xiè xiè.
小明: 我很好,谢谢。
xiǎo hóng zài jiàn
小红: 再见。
xiǎo míng zài jiàn
小明: 再见。

3. 句型 Sentence pattern
In this paragraph you will learn how words are structured within a sentence.
Please study them one by one and reread them several times. Please carefully pay
attention to the differences of every number.
(1) Contrastive sentences with stative verbs
Pattern: Topic/subject stative verb
nǐ hǎo
你好
*Meaning: this literally means “you are fine”, used in daily life to say “hello”.
Please be aware that the predicate “be” is always omitted in Chinese.
Another example:
wó hǎo
我好 I am good
(2) Stative verbs with adverbial modifiers
Pattern: Topic/subject Adverbial modifier Stative verb
wǒ hěn hǎo
我很好 I’m very good
Other example:
xiǎo míng hěn hǎo
小明很好。小明 is good.
(3)Type of question: Question with the interrogative particle “吗 ma”
Pattern: Statement (你好) + particle (吗)?
nǐ hǎo ma
你好吗?How are you?
(4)Type of question: Follow-up questions, with the particle “呢 ne”
Pattern: Topic/Subject 1 + comment, topic/subject2 +呢 ne?
wǒ hěn hǎo nǐ ne
我很好,你呢?I’m good, how about you?
(5) Subject (omitted) + (Adverbial) Predicate + Object (omitted)
wǒ xiè xiènǐ

This is the idiomatic usage to express “thank you / thanks”
wǒ zài jiàn nǐ
我再见你
This is the idiomatic usage to express “goodbye”
