EDITORIAL :

Every year in the Month of October the President of the United States designates by Proclama-tion, “National Italian American Heritage and Culture Month”. The Proclamation is in recognition of the many achievements, contributions , and successes of Italian Americans over the years. There are over 26 million people of Italian descent in the U.S. today. As Italians we should em-brace our culture and Italian identity. At this time I would like to ask you to talk to your kids and grand-kids and ask them to join the SIA. Our culture and Italian heritage belongs in there hands, If we do not celebrate and recognize it we will wither and just be a foot note in the history of this country.

EVENTS :

For all the Chicago Cub’s fans out there, here are some quotes from Anthony Rizzo

“I will respect the limits of my experience but that won't stop me from trying to lead by example of my work. Being a good teammate and picking them up on and off the field is a simple goal of mine “

“One game, one pitch can change everything for a hitter. The way I like to approach it is that every at-bat is its own unique op-portunity to go out there and do something really good.”

“I believe that everything you work at and want in life is a great challenge.”

FAMOUS ITALIANS :

This year our club is teaming up with the members of the Belizzi-MacRae American Legion and the St. Anthony Knights of Columbus to fill and distribute Christmas stockings to the kids. December 17th at 4:00pm will be when the stockings will be given away by Santa at the legion hall. As you can see we have a lot going on as a club and I hope to see as many of you as possible, if not all of you at all the functions scheduled. Again, please accept my sincere apologies for the lateness of the newsletter getting out to you. Happy Holidays! Frank L. Morano, Jr. President, Society of Italian Americans

Congratulations to SIA Member, Officer Ned Chiodo of the Des Moines Po-lice Dept. on August 2 he was featured in an article in the Register. Here is a copy of the article:

Officer Ned Chiodo is a school resource officer at Hoover High School by day. But

during a busy Friday morning commute on July 22, he spotted a stopped car in the

merging lane of traffic on 2nd Avenue.

“I thought man, she’s gonna get hit,” Chiodo said.

He pulled over and discovered the woman had a flat tire, and couldn’t find anybody to

come pick her up. Chiodo thought about changing the tire for her, but decided the intersec-

tion was too dangerous to try — the woman didn't have a spare anyway.

So, he offered her a ride to her job at a factory on the west side of town.

“We had a nice conversation. Her daughter just graduated Iowa State (University) and

wants to get on the police department or fire department,” Chiodo said. “She shook my

hand and said, 'God bless you. Thanks so much for helping me.'”

Chiodo said he didn’t think much about the gesture, and his years on the force haven’t

jaded him.

“If my mom’s car broke down, I would want someone to help her,” Chiodo said.
