Soroptimist International Soroptimist International of Saratoga County (SISC) is part of an international organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in our local community and throughout the world. Soroptimist means “best for women,” and that’s what our organization strives to achieve. Headquartered in Cambridge, England, SI has consultative status with the Economic and Social Council at the United Nations and is a recognized authority on matters that women value most. SISC Efforts Include • In partnership with Wellspring (formerly Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Services), we sponsor and facilitate “Project Hope and Power,” which helps victims of domestic violence achieve financial independence. Hope and Power fosters comments such as: “I learned that I am a good person…that I am deserving and that I have rights. I learned to start believing in myself and hope in a better future. This project is aptly named! I loved every session.” “I am not a victim, I am a survivor. It is important that I model positive behavior and lead by example for my children.” • $20,000 in grants to many local nonprofit organizations throughout Saratoga County • Funding to build a birthing center and health clinic in Uganda, construct latrines and hand-wash stations in Haiti and perform surgeries in remote villages of Ecuador and • Scholarships to women and girls who are improving themselves through college education and community service. A life-long writer and graduate of St. LawrenceUniversity, Kasey Mathewsearned a Master’s degreefrom Boston College, whileteaching for ten years at

an elite Boston independent school. It was duringher teaching tenure that Kasey discovered a love of nurturingwriting in her students, and with the birth of her first child,launched her own business, The Wizard’s Way, a series of popular after school independent writing workshops.

Her debut book, Preemie: Lessons inLove, Life and Motherhood, was pub-lished by Hatherleigh Press in 2012.The book chronicles the vast array oflife lessons that ensued as a resultof the birth of her second child,born four months prematurely,weighing a mere 1 pound 11ounces. The story leads readerson a journey and the universal themes are pertinent to anyone who has faced adversity, or known someone whohas. Following her daughter’s birth, Kasey became a certifiedReiki Master, and in her book, chronicles the role complimen-tary medicine played in their family’s healing.

After the book’s release, Kasey became a featured speaker,traveling around the country, speaking to groups rangingfrom fireside book group gatherings and women’s organiza-tions; to company award banquets, medical conferences, andradio and television programs. Reader’s Choice award, and was a featured book on the Random House book site Bibliophile. Kasey has become a go-to resource and advocate for parents of premature babies,and in the words of Harvard Medical School Professor, Dr. Heidelise Als, “Kasey Mathewshas made us painfully aware ofhow far we must still go to dobetter by the parents and theirinfants in our care.” Kasey wasrecently contacted to speak before Congress and advocatefor increased funding in thearea of neonatology.

With a newly expanded mission, and the launch of her website, The Usual Magic, Kasey is inspiring women to find more meaning, purpose and balance in their lives. Her work includes The Rediscovering Me, Reclaiming Your Life Guidebook, a series of online workshops, and her blog,Awaken the Magic.

Kasey and her husband, Lee, consider themselves passionatehouse renovators and are currently living in their latest reno-vation, a 200-year-old house in Southern New Hampshire,

with their son,Tucker, daughter,Andie and theirrescue dog, Ed.
