This is the 35th year of the Livestock Markets Association of Canada Convention and the 17th year of the Canadian Livestock Auctioneer Championship. We are also hosting a Masters competition. We hope you enjoy listening to and watching the best – and the future of the industry. Congratulations to all this year’s participants.

A bit of history about Heartland…

Cattle ranches began being established in the southwestern part of Saskatchewan in the 1870s when herds of American cattle were driven north to the lush pastures along the Missouri Coteau and benchlands of the Cypress Hills. But it was the arrival of the railway to Moose Jaw Bone Creek in 1882 that the potential of the location as a centre for the livestock industry was first recognized.

It was largely through the efforts of Olaf (Ole) Olafson that the Moose Jaw livestock yards came into being. Olafson, who immigrated to Canada from Iceland to work with the CPR, became an expert horseman and developed a deep love for the open prairie range. In 1897, he started cattle ranching on the plentiful grass near Old Wives Lake with 25 Shorthorn cows and a bull.

As homesteaders began encroaching on rangeland, Olafson con-vinced ranchers to become more organized about marketing their cattle. Olafson and his colleagues successfully launched the Southern Saskatchewan Co-operative Stock Yards in 1919. The existing CPR yards were leased and additional adjacent facilities were constructed on city-owned land. The Livestock Exchange Building, still in use to this day, was also erected.

Moose Jaw auctioneer Vern Brown, along with Jay Blackmore of Davidson, held the first commercial livestock sale by auction at the Moose Jaw stockyards on November 9, 1950. This marked a new page in the history of the stockyards. For many years livestock were sold through commission houses such as Dewey-Garner, Lloyd Wills and the Co-op.

Challenges and changes

The Moose Jaw stockyards have survived the appalling drought and depression of the 1930s, World War II, a devastating outbreak of foot and mouth disease in 1951, BSE in 2003, as well as four major blazes in 1956, 1964, 1979 and 2013.

In 1994, the livestock services and marketing functions of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and Manitoba Pool Elevators were rolled into a new company called Heartland Livestock Services. Currently, there are five auction markets in the province under the Heartland name, one of those being the Moose Jaw yards.

Over the years, changes in the marketing of livestock in Saskatchewan have affected Heartland, from the discontinuance of marketing hogs and slaughter cattle through the rings, to transportation from rail to truck, and the closure of a local packing plant in 2010. Despite these challenges, Heartland Livestock Services in Moose Jaw continues to thrive and evolve. We look forward to serving the cattle industry well into the future.
