Golden Eagle Lands in Downtown Clarion
Golden Eagle Landing, Clarion University Book Center’s new downtown location, opened on Monday, August 13th at 650 Main Street, the former S & T Bank White Pillars building in Clarion with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony held on August 18th. The new location is a welcome addition to the business community. It will provide an off-campus site to the existing book center, where shoppers can find clothing, gifts and more. The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. According to Shelly Wilson, the lease for the building was officially signed on May 1st, and work began to quickly prepare for the August 13th opening of the store, including putting in new carpeting, bringing in merchandise displays, ordering inventory, and more. She credited John Burford and his crew for their hard work in renovations and the Goble family, who now own the building, for being so welcoming and accommodating to be able to turn the former bank into a beautiful downtown store location. The idea for the new location developed from the thought that a Main Street store focusing on Clarion University would be good for both the community and the university, particularly when it comes to improving upon the relationship between the two. Wilson pointed out that this adds to the efforts
and successes put forth by Dr. Karen Whitney, president of Clarion University, in bringing the university and the community together. “When Karen Whitney became president of Clarion University, she expressed a desire to see Clari-on University represented when you drive down Main Street. Golden Eagle Landing will provide that presence.” She went on to say that the store will employ only student workers at this time who are good Clarion University students who want to learn and work in this type of environment, with the idea of another avenue to improve the relationship between the students and the residents of Clarion. Although the community is always welcome at the main campus store, located at the Gemmell Complex on Payne Street within Clarion University, the downtown location will provide easier access to Clarion University merchandise and more. The campus store will continue to be the main location for the purchasing of books and university merchandise, where the new store will focus not only on some university merchandise, but also expand on the gift lines as well as offer some things that aren’t at the book center. This is evident when you walk into the store. You will see the expected university merchandise, but you will also see Yankee Candles, unique gifts, specialty food items and more. New inventory is being added to the store every day, with the intent to keep the merchandise in constant motion so that things are frequently changing and moving around, with changes and additions to inventory as time goes on. As they receive feedback from patrons, be it praise or constructive criticism, the plan is to try to offer new things with every effort to complement downtown Clarion without attempting to compete with or detract from the wonderful stores already established on Main Street. Wilson also described some new things coming in the future to the store, as well as unique uses for some of the rooms that were in use for banking purposes in the past. The counting rooms now make the perfect fitting rooms. The bank safe makes the perfect lockable inventory room. Just off to the right in an alcove behind the stairs will one day be a sitting room where Golden Eagle Landing will offer a place for visitors to browse trade books, including local authors, children’s books and more, while sipping a cup of coffee from the Keurig located nearby. Wilson stated they also hope to be able to arrange book signings and readings by authors. Plus, they have big plans for the former walk-up teller window. One day, hopefully in the near future, that area will serve as not only a buy-back station for text
books, but also as a ticket booth for university events. The official Grand Opening of Golden Eagle Landing is scheduled for September 29 - October 6, during The Farmers National Bank Autumn Leaf Festival™. There will be giveaways and specials during that time, with special deals for Sewing Up Sidewalk Sales days during that week. They will also have extended hours. Along with being open their normal 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, they will also be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday (Family Day). Stop by and check out the new Golden Eagle Landing to-day at 650 Main Street in Clarion.
