…thank you so much for your generous support, and valuing and investing in

my education in the BSE program. The last 5 years at the UW has been a

rollercoaster and I truly appreciate your financial support, which has allowed

me to graduate with a prestigious degree while allowing me to grow as a

person.

I have also had the opportunity to apply for the environmental science and resource management minor. I

think it complements the BSE curriculum fairly well by giving a

background for the resources that we utilize, such as management of trees

that will be used in pulp and paper.

Pursuing the Bioresource Science and Engineering major initially came with challenges in the rigor of coursework and adapting to the new environment. However, the support of BSE faculty and students alike and being drawn in by the importance of the discipline itself has made my entire experience worthwhile.

Off campus, I have had many opportunities to apply my coursework in internships. This last summer, I worked at Vertellus Performance Chemicals as an intern, where I worked on several projects to improve their cooling/steam processes. Additionally, I am currently interning at Domtar’s Plymouth mill, where I have been working in their fiberline department since the start of 2018.

What I like about the BSE program is I am learning an overview of the pulp and

paper industry while exploring deeper topics such as different types of

bleaching stages. Later in the course we will also produce our own ethanol from

a lignocellulosic feedstock.

One of my favorite things about the BSE program is the small class sizes. I believe that I was able to make the most of my time here because I got to know my professors very well inside and outside the classroom.

…I am going to come out as an engineer from one of world’s best STEM universities.

I have enjoyed having the opportunity to gain hands on experience with my five month co-op at Domtar to work in their Marlboro paper mill last year, and putting the engineering economics skills from Rick Gustafson’s capstone class to use in the Alaska and Business Plan challenges.

My experience in the BSE major at the University of Washington is absolutely phenomenal. The small major size allows me to create a community within my major, where my professors and I can forge strong bonds and within my group of peers, I have met my life-long friends who have and will continue to stand by me during my roughest and happiest times.

The classes and material are both very interesting, albeit challenging, and the small class sizes help to build relationships with both my peers and professors.

I've come a long way as a BSE student in just less than a year, and I want to reiterate that the support from the Moody endowment has helped make my journey possible. I hope to grow and achieve much more over the course of my remaining college years (and beyond!). Thank you so much for all your support.

Over the past 5 years, I have developed a passion for pulp and paper science. With graduation in sight, I am eager to begin my professional career. Aside from product quality, and implementing process changes for cost savings, BSE graduates are equipped with an appreciation for the environment. It is something that makes the department and its graduates increasingly adaptive.

Now that I do not have to work anymore, I have been able to use that time to do research in the BSE department. I worked on a flotation cell project and have been working on upgrading lignin compounds using carbon nanotube catalysts under a graduate student. I have even accepted an internship at NORPAC.

My people back home along the Columbia have PhD’s in the knowledge of our land and its history but lack any form of higher education. Your donation gives me the opportunity to bring and prove that higher education is important not just to my family but my people who continue to live in the past and keep my beliefs alive. In a sense that higher education will bring us closer to our ways and drive us further.
