Mary meets them in their home twice a month to support Ellen in her role as her children’s first and most important teacher. She also understands that children who spend time in single-parent families are at greater risk of having psychological problems, becoming sexually active or bearing children at an early age, dropping out of high school, and a host of other negative outcomes—compared to children who grow up with both biological parents. As each home visit passes, trust starts to build. Mary screens both girls to support the appropriate activities for their developmental progress—giving the girls a better chance of reaching their fullest potential during these early, formative years. Then a family crisis hits—mom loses her job and a place to live. Mary’s concern deepens when she cannot reach or find them. Parents who face chronic economic hardship are much more likely than their more affluent peers to experience severe stress, depression, and instability—linked to poor social and emotional outcomes for their children. Fortunately, mom reconnects and says, “I know that you can help me.” Mary adds new activities like Imprints Cares family group meetings, NC Pre-K enrollment, and connections to community resources for other needs. Mom is empowered. She starts to navigate the system so her girls could attend Whitaker Elementary School—success! Today they are thriving. Mom recently shares that Tracy and Shelly are each student of the week. Mary feels blessed to have made an imprint on Ellen, Tracy, and Shelly’s lives. What if Mom had not met Mary at Imprints Cares? What if Mary had not stepped in to bring needed support and connections? What if our community organizations didn’t open their doors to help a single mom in dire straits? This represents the goodness of our community. We cannot do this alone. At Imprints Cares, we shift the odds in a child’s favor with the support from someone like you. Please join us to make a Parent’s Wish and Child’s Future come true this holiday season. Warmest regards, Tracy and Shelly

Mary, one of our Imprints Cares Family Educators, meets Ellen, a mom of twins (Tracy and Shelly), when they are 2 years old. Mom has concerns about her children’s development. Tracy has some learning delays as well as physical disabilities. While Shelly has no physical disabilities, she more heightened social and emotional issues. As a single mom, Ellen is also dealing with multiple medical surgeries for Tracy with more in the future. This is taking an emotional toll as well as creating an underlying financial burden.

Mary welcomes and enrolls Ellen and her girls into the Imprints Cares, Ready for School-Home Visiting program.
