OBJECTIVES FOR TODAY

• What a Reader/Scribe/Notetaker (R/S/N) is.

• When a R/S/N may be used.

• RSN’s & Accessibility.

• Looking ahead to the fall.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN

• Designing classes, webinars and meetings so that they can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people.

• Universal Design makes your meeting accessible to all participants, not just those with disabilities.

• The time and effort you put into designing your class, webinar or meeting to be accessible to blind/low vision students will save a great deal of time and effort later on.• Create accessible class materials

• Tactile as well as visual when possible

• Be mindful of language & specific about visual content

ACCOMMODATIONS AND THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT

Students, faculty and staff with disabilities are entitled to specific accommodations because of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

These accommodations are in addition to Universal Design.

These accommodations cannot be denied because of policies, practices or procedures.

R/S/N- READER/SCRIBE/NOTETAKER• The Disability Support Services office assigns R/S/Ns when indicated in a

student’s Memorandum of Accommodation.

• Students hired each semester & trained by the DSS Office.

• R/S/Ns are employed by the college and are held to the same standards as any other NOVA employee.

Step 1- Students email [email protected] with their schedule.Step 2- DSS Office coordinates with an available scribe.Step 3- RSN Manager emails the professor requesting Canvas access.

Why Canvas?- streamlined receiving Zoom links.- helps navigate inaccessible content.

Step 4- Reader/Scribes are added as an “Observer” to Canvas classes.

The student- scribe dynamic in classes

Scribe Role- Maintain confidentiality and neutrality at all times.• Does not engage with any other students in the class.

• Does not discuss class content except to clarify notes for the student.

• Does not participate in the class discussion

• Does not ask or answer questions for the student.

SCRIBE RESPONSIBILITIESNote-taker Responsibilities• Provide notes only for the time the student is present.

• Remain in class as long as the student remains.

• Determine the best way to provide the notes to the student.

• Agree upon the amount of time in which to provide the notes to the student.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

• Communicate the best way for the note-taker to share the notes.

• Communicate the appropriate time-line for you to receive the notes.

• Only receive notes for the time present in class.

• Notify the professor and note-taker immediately of absence.

• Knowing course deadlines, assignments, and other course information provided in the syllabus.

• Do not ask the note-taker to ask or answer questions for you.
