Director’s Note Good evening and welcome to Wheatland-Chili Middle School/High School’s Dra-ma Club production of Sister Act; The Musical. Welcome to Philadelphia. It’s the 1970s and Deloris Van Cartier is trying to break into the disco scene. When De-loris witnesses a mob hit, she seeks shelter in a cloistered convent under the wit-ness protection program. Deloris, disguised as Sister Mary Clarence, takes over the nun’s choir and brings it to a completely new, funky level. She unexpectedly finds a sisterhood that she never expected.

The upbeat musical comedy “Sister Act” with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, book by Cheri Steinkeller and Bill Steinkellner, and additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane, is based on the popular Touchstone Picture motion picture by the same name, written by Joseph Howard.

In selecting the show this year, I wanted to showcase the strong female voices in our Drama Club. The story highlights the sisterhood of our characters and cele-brates the bond that all these women share. In one of the songs the cast sings, “spread the love around.” The growth of friendship and heartwarming theme of love is something I wanted to bring to our audiences. I feel this is an important message that we need to keep in our minds especially in today’s troublesome times. I hope our story’s joy, love, and laughter bring some needed light into your world.

This year’s musical brought challenging lyrics, dance routines, and character de-velopment, which required many hours of preparation. For the past three months, students have been staying after school, practicing on weekends, and giving up much of their free time to prepare. You will notice that the musical version has many parallels to the original movie but the musical explores the characters more deeply and shows the complicated relationships that they share. I watched every student grow as an actor as they explored the complex scores and complicated scenes. I am so incredibly proud of our cast. I also want to acknowledge the stu-dents who worked tirelessly on our crew, sound, and lights. Your dedication and perseverance was outstanding. Finally, I want to thank our three student musi-cians in our orchestra who shined.

I want to thank the Wheatland-Chili Middle School/High School and local theatre community for supporting our spring musical. I am so grateful to everyone who lent props, costumes, scenery, resources, time, and efforts to our production. It takes a village. I also want to thank my production team. Nick, Cara, Steve, Cori, Shelbie, and Kelie: thank you for your support.

To my seniors in the cast, crew, and orchestra, I will miss you so much. Mrs. Jack-ett and I are so incredibly proud of you. BRAVO. This is your last curtain call. We love you so much.

Thank you to all the families for lending us your students and making sure they had rides to and from rehearsal. Thank you for dedicating your time backstage, providing meals, assisting with costumes and makeup, helping build the set, and setting up our concessions. Your support for our program is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to everyone tonight for supporting the arts in our school. Can I get an amen? Now sit back and relax and enjoy our production of Sister Act.
