Typically, this is the time of year when we

issue our Annual Report to donors and friends.

But with our switch this summer to a fi scal year

(July 1- June 30) as our new budget cycle, it’s a bit

premature to release a full report. After all, we’ve

just begun the “new year.”

Still, we wanted to say thank you. Thank you

for your gifts in 2008. Thank you for helping us

to realize the dream of the new Froedtert &

The Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer

Center. Thank you for helping us to advance patient

care, clinical research and education in very

meaningful ways throughout Froedtert Hospital.

Your gifts are helping Froedtert become one of

our country’s leading academic medical centers.

This year, for example, our stroke, transplant,

endocrinology and respiratory disorders programs

have garnered national recognition. Froedtert was

also named the most-preferred hospital in south-

eastern Wisconsin based on the results of a

National Research Corporation consumer survey.

Philanthropy is our margin of excellence in

many areas and important to our continued success

as an academic medical center. Leading our fund-

raising efforts is Nora Sale, the new Vice President/

Executive Director of the Froedtert Hospital

Foundation. Nora has more than 20 years of

experience in health care philanthropy, including

six years at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Nora brings a passion for philanthropy and is

working to strengthen our culture of giving inside

the hospital and in the larger community. Many

of you have already met Nora during her fi rst few

months at Froedtert. We know she looks forward

to meeting all of you in the near future.

This has been a milestone year for Froedtert

Hospital in so many ways. Amidst all the excite-

ment, we pause at this time of year with profound

gratitude for what you, our generous friends, have

Philanthropy supports a wide range of programs and services throughout Froedtert Hospital.

Some projects are donor directed, others are funded when a department identifi es a need and

requests Froedtert Hospital Foundation support. Here is a sampling of how donor dollars have

been invested this year.

Patient education Management of a serious condi-tion like cancer or heart disease continues well beyond a hospital stay. For most patients, it is a life-long process. Donors to Froedtert Hospital Foundation have supported discharge kits and other support materials for patients with conges-tive heart failure. Donors have also helped to provide cancer patients with books and binders containing all the materials related to their treatment and follow-up care.

Housing for BMT patients Recovery after bone marrow transplant is a long, arduous process. Most patients are required to live within fi ve miles of Froedtert Hospital so caregivers can respond rapidly to any complications. Group housing is

not suitable for patients because of their fragile immune systems and the need for a sterile environment. In response to this need, the hospital provides an apartment nearby. Donor dollars have helped to furnish this living space.

Nursing Nurses are essential to the delivery of care. Recruiting and retaining the best nurses with a passion for patient care is a top priority. Toward that end, donors support scholarships for professional development. Charitable dollars have also helped nurses in Trans-plant Medicine, Orthopedics and Palliative Care attend professional conferences this year, allowing them to learn about advancements in nursing practice and patient care.

Helping patients with basic needs In these tough economic times, our most disadvantaged patients and their families are facing even greater challenges to meeting basic needs.The Froedtert Hospital Foundation’s indigent care fund has provided items ranging from blood pressure cuffs to grocery vouchers.

Cancer screening Early detection is key to beating cancer and regular screening can save lives. Donor dollars support free screening for prostate cancer at Froedtert Hospital every week day of the year. On average, more than 250 men are screened annually.

Physician training Teaching the next generation of health care professionals is a major part of our mission and important to addressing the future health care needs of our region. Donors to Froedtert Hospital Foundation are supporting four high-profi le fellow-ships. Fellowships provide advanced specialty training to physicians and help to address physician shortages in certain specialties. Fellowships include the Daniel M. Soref Fellow-ship for Clinical Neuroscience, the Donald J. Schuenke Cancer Fellow-ship, the Mazie Froedtert Willms & Sue Froedtert Cancer Fellowship, and the Women’s Sports Medicine Fellowship.

Bricks and mortar Green space at the entrance to Froedtert East will be transformed next year into a “Healing Plaza”— a park-like setting with trees, a water fountain, paths and benches, providing a quiet oasis for visitors. The Healing Plaza will be entirely

donor supported. Meanwhile, donor dollars will support some basic renovations to the Family Center in Froedtert West. The Family Center is the primary meeting area for families whose loved ones are in surgery or in the Intensive Care Unit. With more than 80,000 visitors annually, constant “wear and tear” is a challenge.

Infant safety Infant safety is a major focus of donor-funded educational programs.Teaching new parents about the dangers of shaking a baby is the focus of The Period of Purple Crying educational program. The Froedtert Hospital Foundation also funds portable beds, so that every baby can have a safe sleep environment.

Emotional and spiritual support Froedtert employs chaplains to help address the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and guests. The Froedtert Hospital Foundation has provided start-up dollars for the chaplaincy program’s new prayer shawl ministry. Volunteers hand-knit the shawls, which are given to patients and their loved ones as a source of comfort after a serious diagnosis or diffi cult medical procedure, or following a loss.

Art program In response to research showing that art can have a positive, almost therapeutic impact on patients, the Clinical Cancer Center has launched a new program featuring donor-funded professional art and an art therapy program.

To understand how George Riordan, his love of baseball, and the Friends of Merrill Park benefi t the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical

Cancer Center, you need to understand George’s boyhood neighborhood just after the Great Depression. It was a time when kids played baseball at the park before dinner, and went back afterward until dark. Merrill Park, once home to Irish immigrant railroad workers, was a welcom-ing place for new arrivals and the birthplace of many civic, religious and business leaders. In 2001, George lost his wife to lung cancer. A few years later, one of his best friends since kindergarten lost his wife to breast cancer. Together, they came up with an idea that took them back to their childhood neighborhood values and the annual picnic was born. For the past fi ve years, the Friends’ annual picnic reunited the “old” neighborhood for good food, fellowship, entertainment and the opportunity to raise funds for the Froedtert & The Medical

College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center. Why? Part of the Friends of Merrill Park mission reads, “In Merrill Park, neighbors offered a ‘hand up’ to people facing the challenges of a new life. Today, in keeping with the traditions and spirit of our community, and in honored memory of loved ones lost to cancer, we created a Supportive Fund to provide fi nancial support for persons facing a cancer diagnosis.” Merrill Park is a neighborhood built upon good, honest friendships that stand the test of time—70 years to be exact. Riordan said, “Regardless of where life took us, our picnic brings us home.” A sign above the fi eldhouse reads, “Working together to preserve, promote and protect our community.” George Riordan and the Friends of Merrill Park are a living testimony to those words. “Their annual donation goes directly to the Clinical Cancer Center patients and their families, supporting their needs during a critical point in time,” said Sue Derus, executive director of cancer services for Froedtert & Community Health.

The Raciest Party of the Year

Froedtert Hospital Foundation is grateful

to the Automobile Dealers Association of Mega Milwaukee.

We were selected as one of four recipients of the funds

raised through the Greater Milwaukee Auto Show Gala.

The event features great food, music, friends and a sneak peak at the new models,

concept vehicles and vintage and exotic cars at the annual

Greater Milwaukee Auto Show. Mary Ann and John Sendik stepped forward to

co-chair the event on behalf of Froedtert and we send

an enthusiastic thank you to the Sendiks and ADAMM!

Ann Ferge of Mayville, Wisconsin, is a caregiver. For most of her life, she has taken care of someone she loves—her mother, father, aunt, uncle, and husband, Ruben.

Thankfully all of her loved ones had their estates in order, which, in part, may be why she recently made her estate planning decisions. She met with her attorney and fi nancial planner. She called people she trusted and discussed her desire to give some- thing to the places that helped make a difference in her life; Froedtert Hospital is one of those places. When asked, “Why did you choose Froedtert?” her eyes light up. “My husband had health problems, which began with a bad back. It became so bad he could not walk, but after his surgery at Froedtert, he walked. We were so grateful,” said Ann. Several years later, Ruben was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Once again, Ann and Ruben found themselves back at Froedtert Hospital.

For the fi rst time in many years, Ann does not have anyone to visit at the nursing home or care for at her home. She is alone, but not lonely. “I’m my own boss,” she laughs. She is in charge of her house, gardens, special collections, organizing her 50th high school class reunion, watching the stock market, and giving back to the places that gave her more quality years with her soul mate, Ruben. While they married later in life, Ann and Ruben were in love for many years. “I broke up with him once and at the time told him that if we were meant to be together, we would be,” said Ann. Ten years later, they were married. When people ask her what was the happiest day of her life, she responds without hesitation, “My wedding day. Ours was such a special relationship, and even though he has been gone for almost 11 years, I still think of him every day. I even fi nd myself talking to him. He made me very happy and I am so grateful to those who helped him when he was sick, giving us many more wonderful years.” Froedtert Hospital could not be more grateful for her gesture. Thank you, Ann Ferge, for remembering us in your and Ruben’s estate.

Not everyone can remember when they learned to walk, but Melissa Paulson-Conger can. In less than one week she went from being an average 16-year-

old who walked to school every day to being paralyzed and on a ventilator. Diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a relatively rare neuro-logical disorder, she didn’t know if she would live much less walk again. After weeks in intensive care and rehabilita-tion, the physicians, therapists and nurses who cared for Melissa helped restore her health. That experience sparked an interest in neuro-logical medicine that led Melissa to nursing school and a career at the same hospital that saved her life. In 2007, she earned her master’s degree with the assistance of Froedtert Hospital. Froedtert supports the education of many entry-level staff who return to school to pursue nursing degrees and current nurses working for advanced degrees. Now a Neuroscience Clinical Nurse Specialist, Melissa works side-by-side with some of the nurses who cared for her 23 years ago, like Donna Johnson, program coordinator for the Spinal Cord Injury Program.

“I remember the PM shift nurse, Jeannine Lemley, who still works here. She held my hand the entire time while I had this plethora of doctors and nurses working on me because I was slowly ‘crashing’ as I would say now,” Melissa recalls. “Because my mom couldn’t be there, she was the next best thing.” Melissa sees that same compassion and commitment throughout the hospital today. She agreed to let the Froedtert Hospital Foundation feature her story in its 2008 year-end appeal letter to give back to those who give so selfl essly to others. She knows fi rst-hand the difference the scholarship fund makes. “There are these bright and wonderful and talented people here who want to stay at the bedside and want to be able to advance them-selves,” Melissa says. “From what I’ve experienced, Froedtert Hospital has given me the drive to be who I am today and has shaped who I am. To support that kind of environment is to ultimately support people in their time of greatest need and vulnerability.”

As part of Froedtert Hospital‘s dedication to nursing

professional development, a Scholarship Endowment Fund was created. In 2007,

each recipient received $2,500 funded by the

Froedtert Hospital Foundation. In our

commitment to educating the next generation of nurses,

scholarship applications are accepted from any Froedtert staff member interested in pursuing initial or ongoing formal nursing education.

Froedtert Nursing Scholarships

As part of Froedtert Hospital‘s dedication to nursing

professional development, a Scholarship Endowment Fund was created. In 2007,

each recipient received $2,500 funded by the

Froedtert Hospital Foundation. In our

commitment to educating the next generation of nurses,

scholarship applications are accepted from any Froedtert staff member interested in pursuing initial or ongoing formal nursing education.

The Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin Desert Classic is a golf event offering a warm winter destination for Wisconsin golfers and a fundraiser for The Froedtert

& The Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center. However, for Gary Zimmerman and Mark Baumgartner, co-chairs of the 2009 Desert Classic, the planning committee and the 100 participants, it is more than a golf outing. “This event is about friendship,” said Zimmerman. Going into its 15th year, the Desert Classic is successful on many levels. To date, it has raisedmore than $1 million to benefi t the Clinical Cancer Center. More importantly, it connects people to Froedtert Hospital and makes them part of its culture, work and mission. “We don’t use gimmicks—just sun, golf and a commitment to Froedtert Hospital,” said Zimmerman.

Our focus is to raise “money for the hospital and to attract participants,” said Baumgartner. “We want our participants to have fun and become a friend of Froedtert Hospital,” Zimmerman agreed. “This year, we’re offering to help our out-of-town golfers fi nd tee times on other courses for those who want to extend their trip,” said Baumgartner. “The Desert Classic gives us the opportunity to meet the hospital’s leadership and gain a better understanding of how our support affects the hospital and its patients.” Both co-chairs agree, “We are a family coming together as friends connecting to the very soulof the hospital.” “I’ve worked on this committee since its inception and I love to watch people arrive.They are smiling; coming out of the Wisconsin gray and into the Arizona sun, and the warmwelcome of Froedtert Hospital,” said Zimmerman.

Imagine a hospital, known as one of only 125 academic medical centers in the country, offering patients and families a respite to refl ect. The Healing Plaza is such

a place and is becoming a reality on the hospital campus thanks to the Froedtert Hospital Volunteer Associates. Much of the credit for making the Healing Plaza a reality is due to Mark Schaefer and the Froedtert Hospital Volunteer Associates. Mark has experience from both sides of patient care. Twelve years ago, Mark awoke with the worst headache he had ever experienced. His mother became concerned when she was unable to contact him for nearly two days. She went to his house and found him unconscious, barely breathing. Mark was rushed to Froedtert, where his family was informed he suffered an aneurysm in his brain, which ruptured and caused internal bleeding. He had a slim chance of surviving. Today, he serves as president of the Froedtert Hospital Volunteer Associates. Mark and his family understand fi rst hand the need for a place of silence and serenity that can nurture the body,

mind and spirit. “The strain of visiting and watching a loved one struggle for their life takes its toll,” said Mark. “The Healing Plaza will be a place for patients, their families, employees, physicians and volunteers to pray, grieve, hope, give thanks and remember.” The Froedtert Hospital Volunteer Associates was among the fi rst to support the project by donating a path in honor of the men and women who so generously donate their time to the hospital.
