Sawadee Ka!My name is Emmy. In this guide I hope to share some of the experiences that I’ve had whilst living and working in Thailand and pass along some tips and tricks on how you, too, can do it!

At the time of writing this guide for you (April 2019) the Thai baht equates to:

1 USD = 31.88 BHT1 GBP = 41.49 BHT

SalaryMonkeys love me!Salary

30,000 Baht ($950/ £725) per month

I work in a traditional Thai school Monday to Friday, 9:00 am- 4:00 pm. I do have some free time to plan my lessons, so I manage to do all of my work within those hours and spend the majority of my weekends travelling.

You can earn a higher wage working in an International school, but they often require several years teaching experience. This can be something to aspire to if you plan on staying in the same destination for some time.

RentMy apartment is 3,500 baht ($110/ £84) per month and is a typical Thai style apartment. It’s common for Thai accommodation not to have a kitchen because eating out is so cheap and a part of their culture. So my apartment is a simple bedroom with an attached bathroom and patio. I use a fan at night so my electricity bill is roughly 500 baht ($15/ £12) per month. If you use your AC every night your bill will be up to 1,500 baht ($50/ £38)

Bills

Every month I get a new SIM card that is 150 baht ($5/ £3.80) . If you don’t want to change your SIM card every month and you want to keep the same phone number, I think it goes up to 500 baht ($15/ £12).

Transport

I have my own motorbike and spend approx 2,000 Thai baht ($63/ £50) a month on fuel.

I also like to travel around at the weekends and make the most of being so far from home!

Some months you’ll have more time to travel than others so your spending can vary drastically!

I average roughly 6,000 Thai baht ($187/ £142) per trip. In the last few months here I’ve had the opportunity to go to Khao Sok National Park, Pai, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Krabi!

FoodThere can be a huge price gap depending on how you chose to live.

Eat like a Thai native, spend like a Thai native! In other words, embrace pad Thai, fried rice, and their local markets for 40 Thai baht ($1.25/ 95p) per meal. OR spend 4 to 5 times the price and indulge on pizza and cheeseburgers for 350 baht ($11/ £8.40) per meal!

Thai food is AMAZING. Man do they know how to use their spices (and sugar).Every day I spend about 20 baht (less than $1/ 80p) on breakfast and I get lunch for free at school!

I usually spend roughly 60 ($1.87/ £1.42) baht on dinner. I average 150 baht ($4.69/ £3.57) a day because I spend at least 300 baht ($ 9.38) a day on the weekends!

Fun!In the beginning you think “Oh Thailand is so cheap”, so you spend like crazy! I quickly learned to change that mindset. If you get paid a Thai salary, you have to spend on a Thai budget. I stopped buying 600 baht bottles of wine REAL quick!

Living in Thailand on your teacher salary is 100% possible and you can TOTALLY save at least half of your earnings!
