DESCRIPTION
Although May shows some recovery from April's 'Songkran' dip, it doesn't reach February and March levels. Total production now stands at 792,000 units after 5 months...so it seems likely that Thailand might miss the 2 Mio. unit mark this year. Honda has been hit especially hard – the 60% Y-o-Y decrease in overall domestic sales is twice as high as those from Toyota and Isuzu, and difficult to explain... It will be interesting to see how new models and capacities (such as Nissan's launch of the new 2015 Navarra) will influence local demand over the next months. During the Automotive Summit last week at BITEC, the TAI announced that 10 carmakers have applied to be part of the ECO CAR Phase II initiative resulting in an additional capacity of 1.58 Mio units until 2018. Along with other investments (such as Toyota relocating from Melbourne, Australia to Thailand) and expansion of SAIC-CP Motors MG plants could push capacity up to 5 Million units until the end of the decade.TRANSCRIPT
