A key element of our work at Bow School is to broaden horizons and ensure that our students all have plenty of opportunities to have contact with a wide range of people and organisations in order to open their eyes to the wide range of careers that are open to them in their futures. We are constantly encouraging ambition and you will see in this Newsletter just some of the experiences that our students are having. The identification and development of talent across the Creative Arts, in particular, is also an important strand of the work that this school does. Today is a celebration of this and large numbers of our talented students are participating in ‘Bow School’s Day of Talent’. We have performances and workshops running throughout the day to celebrate the huge talent pool that we have on our school roll. At break time today, all those in the playground were treated to a showcase of drumming and at the end of the day there will be many youngsters (and some adults) getting involved in Bubble Football. Throughout the day there is ballet, art, music, technology and drama for our students to experience. Looking forwards, we have been running activities after school for Year 6 and 5 students to come in and experience secondary school life. Next week we have a full day for those who will be joining us in Year 7 next year and the following week a similar day for those who want to join our Sixth Form. We know and understand the importance of enabling students to have a flying start to their time at secondary school or in the Sixth Form and we therefore place huge value on these taster days. Whilst the recent warm weather has been a pleasant change from the cold and miserable days of the winter, we know that many of our students have found the heat a challenge. Please make sure that they have a bottle of water with them in school so that they can remain hydrated throughout the day. There are a number of water fountains around the school where these bottles can be refilled with chilled water at break and lunchtimes. Having plenty of water will be especially important when out on trips and visits, or being involved in Sports Day. 29 th June 2018 MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE HEADTEACHER CATH SMITH

Tower Hamlet’s writing competition winner - ‘We need to make some changes around here’ After much anticipation, the winner for the Tower Hamlet’s writing competition for Bow School has been revealed... Jannatul (10O) blew judges away with her short story exploring the challenges around race, religion and identity. Jannatul’s creative piece follows the story of a young girl trying to fit in a society where tensions are high; she is torn between two identities and her struggle to reveal who she really is stirs fury in the one she trusts the most. As part of the winning process Jannatul, alongside other winning students, was invited to take part in a writing workshop with the acclaimed children’s author Beverly Naidoo. Well done Jannatul! We hope to see many more students taking part in competitions!

On Thursday 21st June our GCSE Dance, and some younger Talented dancers, went to visit the Rothschild building in Bank. We were invited there by Rothschild and Sadler’s Wells to promote the successful partnership we have created to support the delivery of GCSE Dance at Bow School. Sadler’s Wells and Miss Anderson have been working over the past year to provide the GCSE Dance cohort with workshops from professional dancers, and visits to shows, funded by Rothschild. On Thursday 21st June our students showcased what we created as a result of these experiences, and helped promote these benefits to possible future partners.

Our students have never looked so professional …… the maturity in their performance and networking skills was appreciated by all Chief Executives and Business Managers in the room and, as a result, showcased Bow School in the best possible light. Bow School are very proud of all students and their performances - they could not have done better. Congratulations to them all!

A Night with M.J. - ELAM 25th June On Monday 25th June the Music Department took around 50 pupils to ELAM for an amazing show celebrating the life and music of Michael Jackson. We took the two Year 10 BTEC Music classes plus selected pupils from Phoenix. The show featured around 120 performers set up in bands, with solo singers and dance troupes. Each band performed an iconic Michael Jackson track, in perfect time to the original music video, which was displayed on a giant projector screen behind. The performances were first rate, with some stunning singing and instrumental playing. Hits included Thriller, Bad, Leave Me Alone, Blame it on the Boogie and many more. Each performance started with a video made especially for the event, featuring the performers describing what the songs meant to them as artists, and also facts and trivia about each of the ground breaking songs. We are very grateful to ELAM for offering this private, matinee performance to us completely free for the pupils! The pupils were really inspired by hearing the amazing music brought to life live on stage and we hope the public shows are a great success for the ELAM students.

Poetry Slam! With Spoken Word Artist Joshua Idehen 10 students in KS3 were very lucky to participate in a range of creative writing activities with spoken word artist and poet Joshua Idehen all day on Monday 25th June. The whole day involved students thinking about their identity and how they can express who they are in a thoughtful, creative and original way. As well as looking at their identity, pupils were tasked to write a poem about global issues. All the pupils worked together, rising to each challenge and respecting each other’s views. 5 students have been chosen to showcase their work at the Poetry Slam! at the Rich Mix in Bethnal Green. We wish them every success for the competition. Below is a poem inspired by the plight of the Syrian refugee crisis written by two students in Year 8:

POETRY SLAM! MS KHATUN

Her face was a mirror of sadness Her heart was a bomb waiting to explode.

Her brain, their brains were a constant movie of tragic flashbacks Her skin was dirt, alive with every movement.

Her ribs were bars holding her emotions.

How many sad or depressed people does it need to change a lightbulb? None.

It’s always dark.

Speakers for Schools Assembly – Kwame Kwaten – Thursday 14th June On Thursday 14th June, BowExtra! and the Music Department hosted the ‘Speakers for Schools’ talk, presented by Kwame Kwaten. Kwame is a British Manager, Music Consultant, musician and record producer. He owns an artist management and consultancy company called Ferocious Talent and is a co-founder of Cr8ing Vision, a non-profit company that offers young people a range of educational programmes, seminars, workshops and opportunities in both the music and sports industries. We were delighted and grateful to have Kwame take the time out of his busy schedule to talk to our BTEC Music students and students from our Music Talent register. Kwame shared his wisdom and experience in the music industry to help broaden the audience’s horizons, make them feel confident about the world of possibilities their futures hold and motivate them to fulfil their maximum potential. Our esteemed guest also kept things fun by organising an engaging interactive music industry quiz for students to take part in. The prize: Nando’s vouchers for seven of our lucky winners.

In the short time Kwame had with the students, he made a unique impression and we feel confident that he brought new direction and impetus to many.

WE Won’t Rest Celebration Event – Morpeth School On Wednesday 20th June, the WE charity hosted their first ever WE Day - ‘WE Won’t Rest Celebration’ event at Morpeth School. This grand occasion was set up to bring together and celebrate schools who have done tremendous work in shining a much needed light on the current homelessness crisis facing many parts of the UK. The afternoon consisted of workshops and activities to develop action planning, leadership and reflection skills. Students from Bow School and Yeading Primary School were asked to carry out a 2-minute presentation on their WE Won’t Rest project.

The event recognised the fantastic work our students have done so far, enabled them to reflect on their achievements and think ahead regarding their next steps. The workshops were an incredible way to educate our young people about the taboos and stereotypes surrounding homelessness and to inspire them to take world-changing action!
