It is the Mass at which the oils Sacred Chrism, Oil of Catechumens, and Oil of the Sick are blessed by the bishop. These newly blessed oils are then brought to the parishes in the diocese for sacramental use in the parishes. It is also at the Chrism Mass that the priests of the diocese renew the promises they made when they were ordained to the ministerial priesthood. It is expected that the priests of the diocese who are able to participate in concelebrating the Mass should do so. The concelebration of the Mass is a sign of the unity and communion of the priests with their bishop. The Chrism Mass is most appropriately celebrated on Holy Thursday. Remember, the Church observes Holy Thursday as the time when Jesus instituted the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper and while at the Last Supper commissioned his disciples as priests “Do this in memory of me.” Jesus had declared the bread to be his Body and the wine to be his Blood. With the statement, “Do this in memory of me,” Jesus gave the disciples the power to make the miracle of the Last Supper happen. This power is handed on down through the ages in the ordained priesthood by bishops who are the successors of the apostles. While the Chrism Mass is most appropriately celebrated on Holy Thursday, the Church allows the bishop to set another day for the Chrism Mass so that priests may be able to be present. If the Chrism Mas is held on Holy Thursday, it takes place in the morning; in the evening is Mass of the Lord’s Supper. No other Masses may be celebrated on Holy Thursday (so you’ll notice I’ll not have Mass at Highmore Health on Thursday morning). By the way, if some members of St. Mary Parish plan to attend the Chrism Mass on March 10, they may collect the newly blessed oils. Mass is at 11:00 am. And may you have a blessed week!

Father Bill Osborn is celebrating 50 years of Ordination to the priesthood. His “first” Mass was in

Miller on March 13th

. He is coming to St. Ann’s for Mass on March 13, 2016. For that weekend we’ll switch

Mass times for Highmore/Miller. So Mass on March 13, 2016 in Highmore will be at 9:00 AM and in Miller at

11:00 AM.

Fr. Murtha’s Musings: You’ll notice there is no Mass at Highmore on Thursday this week. Bishop Swain has

scheduled Thursday, March 10 as the day for the Chrism Mass in the diocese. It is the Mass at which the oils –

Sacred Chrism, Oil of Catechumens, and Oil of the Sick – are blessed by the bishop. These newly blessed oils are

then brought to the parishes in the diocese for sacramental use in the parishes. It is also at the Chrism Mass that the

priests of the diocese renew the promises they made when they were ordained to the ministerial priesthood. It is

expected that the priests of the diocese who are able to participate in concelebrating the Mass should do so. The

concelebration of the Mass is a sign of the unity and communion of the priests with their bishop.

The Chrism Mass is most appropriately celebrated on Holy Thursday. Remember, the Church observes Holy

Thursday as the time when Jesus instituted the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper and while at the

Last Supper commissioned his disciples as priests – “Do this in memory of me.” Jesus had declared the bread to be

his Body and the wine to be his Blood. With the statement, “Do this in memory of me,” Jesus gave the disciples the

power to make the miracle of the Last Supper happen. This power is handed on down through the ages in the

ordained priesthood by bishops who are the successors of the apostles. While the Chrism Mass is most appropriately

celebrated on Holy Thursday, the Church allows the bishop to set another day for the Chrism Mass so that priests

may be able to be present. If the Chrism Mas is held on Holy Thursday, it takes place in the morning; in the evening

is Mass of the Lord’s Supper. No other Masses may be celebrated on Holy Thursday (so you’ll notice I’ll not have

Mass at Highmore Health on Thursday morning).

By the way, if some members of St. Mary Parish plan to attend the Chrism Mass on March 10, they may collect

the newly blessed oils. Mass is at 11:00 am. And may you have a blessed week!
