The Annual Report is an important way for

Epilepsy Halton Peel Hamilton to reflect on

2016 as it was a very busy and exciting year.

We are so very proud of the impact EHPH

has made on individuals and families in our

ever growing community.

The Region of Peel has been instrumental in

our ability to build capacity in the epilepsy community, allowing us to have a manager for volunteers,

communications and professional financial management. Never before have we had so many volunteers to assist

staff in the execution of our programs and fundraising endeavours; We have grown and expanded our presence

on social media and with more financial management assistance, more time was allowed for other capacity

building activities such as epilepsy awareness events and building relationships with corporate partners.

People are our strength and I am grateful to have surrounded the agency with an incredible assembly of staff,

volunteers and board directors providing a cohesive environment for all to carry out our Mission, Vision and

Goals collectively.

To our Members, Funders and Partners – we commend you for your tremendous impact and we look forward

to our continued work together.

2015 – 2016 has once again been a year of steady growth with a board of

directors committed to moving the organization forward to meet the needs

of the community. As the agency grows, both the staff and the board remain

dedicated to our mission, vision, values and our code of ethics. We continue

to build our community, strengthen our community and support our

community with new ideas and strong outreach initiatives.

Epilepsy Halton Peel Hamilton and its board, continue to meet the challenges

and needs of our community. With passion and commitment, we will continue to grow, continue to succeed and

continue our commitment to providing outstanding programs and services.

On behalf of the board and everyone living with or affected by epilepsy in our service area, I would like to thank all of our

funders, volunteers and staff whose efforts have made a positive difference in the lives of so many.

This years upcoming Purple Gala will be held on Saturday March 25th, 2017

We are returning to the amazing Credit Valley Golf and Country Club where we will once again

come together to celebrate all that is purple and all that is epilepsy.

This year, we are working on the theme “Hollywood” for the event.

We have the newly designed “Hollywood Harry and Hollywood Hannah ” signature EHPH

mascot that we will bring to auction during the event raising money for Sunny Days Camp for

Kids. (design in progress)

Due to the overwhelming success of Molly Masquerade 2016 (see pic), this years

limited edition mascot may be pre-ordered...tax receipt donation applicable.

We once again had over 180 volunteers working our Annual Charity Gift Wrap at Shoppers

World Brampton,

We returned to Oakville Rib-fest,

We were present at Volunteer Fairs across our area spreading awareness,

We had volunteers working at the 2016 Purple Gala,

We participated for our 6th year at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

Special thanks to the Board of Directors who donate their time and energy everyday, without question, without

hesitation. Your dedication and support is what helps us move forward to care for those who need our

support.

Ernie & Kathy Cavallin

The H.O.P.E. Award is presented to an individual or group who

has made an outstanding commitment to improving the quality

of life for people with Epilepsy.

In 1982 Epilepsy Ontario finally received funding to expand

their services. Recognizing the need for a chapter in

Mississauga, they were ready to host their first recruitment

meeting by early 1984. That night two of the attendees that

signed up and later recognized as co-founders were Kathy

Cavallin and Mytrie Prashad. They both have epilepsy, had previously used the information and support

services provided by Epilepsy Ontario and wanted to help those in our community that were in need of these

services. This was the start of “Epilepsy Mississauga”.

With assistance and resources from Epilepsy Ontario they provided information and telephone support

services from their homes. It was in the days before the internet and social media so they depended a lot on

the Mississauga News to create awareness of the organization and to advertise services, events and meetings.

Slowly they formed a board and started fundraising. The baseball-a-thon being our most successful fundraiser

to date was organized by Ernie Cavallin. Hamilton was also starting its own chapter and created “Glad Days” as

their main fundraiser. It was so successful that the gladiola became the flower symbol for Epilepsy and the

fundraiser is still being adopted by various chapters to this day.

In Mississauga they expanded their information support to include school seminars for teachers during the PA

days. A few years later, they received a BINGO licence as their main fundraiser to expand services, finance an

office and hire a full time coordinator. They continued for as long as they could with a new board and the help

of their families, but again, the funding slowly dwindled as did their volunteer base.

As with most new organizations Epilepsy Mississauga endured many growing pains with people coming and

going. Thankfully, over the years, there were always others willing to take the chapter to its next step. Today,

Ernie continues as a board member of Epilepsy Halton Peel Hamilton and plays a vital role in the promotion of

all things epilepsy.

From then until now, there has been a tremendous growth of services and support at a level that both Ernie

and Kathy could never have imagined or conceived back in 1984. Knowing how difficult the challenges can be

and the toll that it takes both personally and emotionally we thank and commend both Ernie and Kathy for their

service and dedication in providing support to individuals with epilepsy and their families. And specifically for

being the pioneers of an agency that needed to be created, needed to grow, needed to expand and because of

these two, we have become who we are today – Epilepsy Halton Peel Hamilton.
