WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
Dear friends in the Lord:
At Baptism, each of us is marked by the Lord and en-
trusted with a special responsibility to tell the world of His mes-
sage and invitation. We are, indeed, called to serve as His mis-
sionaries.
World Mission Sunday affords all baptized Catholics an
opportunity to celebrate their missionary vocation through pray-
er and sacrifice for the missionary work of the Church.
This year's World Mission Sunday, October 21
st
, marks
the 110th Anniversary of our “mission independence.” Through
1908, the Church in the United States was the beneficiary of the
generosity of the Catholic faithful of Europe through the Society
of the Propagation of the Faith. In fact, two—thirds of the very
first collection of the Propagation of the Faith, in 1822, was sent
to the Church in America, making it possible to build churches
and schools, educate clergy and religious, provide for the good
works of religious communities, and support evangelization here
at home. By a 1908 papal decree, the designation “mission terri-
tory" was removed from the United States. More than one hun-
dred years later, as we recall our own mission history, we are
called upon to assist both spiritually and financially the more
than 1,150 “young churches” in Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands,
and Latin America, all of which have the same needs that the
United States once had.
With this in mind, please be as generous as your means
will allow this World Mission Sunday so that the Propagation of
the Faith can continue to spread the “Good News" to the grow-
ing faith communities of our day. So, too, following the call of
our Holy Father, Pope Francis, let us pray that our celebration of
World Mission Sunday will generate within us a renewed aware-
ness of the need to proclaim the Gospel to all corners of the
world.
Faithfully in Christ,

A LETTER FROM FR. JIM
“As you may have guessed, I have become more
deeply involved in everything Epiphany, and I’m no
longer able to celebrate Mass at Holy Family on Sun-
days. It began this summer when I thought I would be
able to get over there but uncertainties about my
schedule and Fr. Titus’ extended from May until late
June, and then I decided to do a repeat of my walk
across Spain on the Camino de Santiago--which effec-
tively cancelled any weekends tor Holy Family. But
then assessing the multiple new programs we are
starting here beginning this month, it became clear to
me that I couldn’t really leave the parish on Sundays
anymore.”
“I want to thank you for your gracious generosity to
me especially, for allowing me to celebrate Mass with
a community that I have been blessed to know and
love for 30 years. The good people of Holy Family
have always inspired me by their devotion, kindness
and generosity, and I learned a great deal from them
about how to serve as a priest. I am grateful for all my
brothers and sisters at both Holy Family and St Rita's,
and hope to stay in touch with many of them despite
being on a different island!”
With gratitude,
Jim Mayzik SJ

Catechism on the Real Presence
by Saint John Vianney
Our Lord is there as a Victim; and a prayer
that is very pleasing to God is to ask the Blessed Virgin to
offer to the Eternal Father her Divine Son, all bleeding,
all torn, for the conversion of sinners; it is the best prayer
we can make, since, indeed, all prayers are made in the
name and through the merits of Jesus Christ. We must
also thank God for all those indulgences that purify us
from our sins . . . but we pay no attention to them. We
tread upon indulgences, one might say, as we tread upon
the sheaves of corn after the harvest. See, there are seven
years and seven quarantines for hearing the catechism,
three hundred days for reciting the Litany of the Blessed
Virgin, the Salve Regina, and the Angelus. In short, the
good God multiplies His graces upon us; and how sorry
we shall be at the end of our lives that we did not profit
by them!
When we are before the Blessed Sacrament, in-
stead of looking about, let us shut our eyes and our
mouth; let us open our heart: our good God will open His;
we shall go to Him, He will come to us, the one to ask,
the other to receive; it will be like a breath from one to
the other. What sweetness do we not find in forgetting
ourselves in order to seek God! The saints lost sight of
themselves that they might see nothing but God, and labor
for Him alone; they forgot all created objects in order to
find Him alone. This is the way to reach Heaven.
Catechism on the Priesthood
by Saint John Vianney
My children, we have come to the Sacrament of
Orders. It is a Sacrament which seems to relate to no one
among you, and which yet relates to everyone. This Sacra-
ment raises man up to God. What is a priest! A man who
holds the place of God -- a man who is invested with all
the powers of God. "Go,” said Our Lord to the priest; "as
My Father sent Me, I send you. All power has been given
Me in Heaven and on earth. Go then, teach all nations. . . .
He who listens to you, listens to Me; he who despises you
despises Me. “When the priest remits sins, he does not say,
"God pardons you"; he says, "I absolve you.” At the Con-
secration, he does not say, "This is the Body of Our Lord;"
he says, "This is My Body.”
