FROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome back to Term 3. It‟s good to see all students and staff returning rested and relaxed after the holidays. We look forward to another exciting term of learning challenges and opportunities for the students, staff and parents

at Milgate PS. There are many learning activities happening this term both in classrooms and outside of the school including camps, excursions, Year 5/ 6 Musical, House Athletics, Level 1 and 2 swimming program, Public Speaking competition, Book Fair, other Maths and Literacy learning opportunities. MATHS TALENT QUEST Many students and classes participated in Maths Talent Quest challenges. These are displayed in the corridor outside the staffroom and many parents and students have viewed these excellent projects. They are all based around maths problems which the students have investigated and presented their findings. This provides open ended challenges that give students the opportunity to think in different ways. Some of these have been selected to be submitted in the state Maths Talent Quest. These are judged by teachers across the state and the final results will be available later in August. Well done to all who participated and also to those who were selected for the state competition. Come and view these excellent learning challenges produced by our students. PUPIL FREE DAY – MONDAY 9 AUGUST ULTRANET AND EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY The last pupil free day will be on Monday 9 August. This is a state-wide pupil free day for all state schools. On this day there will be no school for students and teachers will be involved in professional learning about the Ultranet and its implementation. The Ultranet is an online learning environment which will support high quality learning and teaching, and connect students, parents, teachers and school administrators, anywhere, anytime. The Ultranet will be rolled out to schools in stages during Terms 3 and 4 beginning with the teacher portal. The student and parent portals will come at a later date. The Ultranet is designed to:

Ensure that every child will have a complete record of achievement across all years of schooling.

Give students their own online workspaces

Allow students to learn in an environment that will ensure that they have the cutting edge ICT skills they will need to in the 21st century workforce.

Allow teachers and schools to use the Ultranet for recording attendance, school reports, timetabling and school events, to pool schools‟ resources and give teachers access to a vast central database of classroom resources.

ASSEMBLY NEXT WEEK – MONDAY 26 JULY at 2:45pm – The NED Show Next Monday at assembly the 45 minute NED show will be presented to the students in the stadium beginning at 2:45pm. This will take the whole of the assembly time so the normal assembly will not take place. Parents are welcome to attend. It is based on the N- Never give up, E – Encourage others, D- Do your best, and is based around achieving your best, following your dreams and includes student participation. Further information is available in the attachment with this WHAM. BUILDING PROGRESS The new basketball court is nearing completion. The boundary fences went up during the holidays and the cement pathways around the basketball court are still to be completed. Once they are finished and all work associated with it are completed, we will be able to use the basketball court. The learning centre is progressing well with brickwork and windows being installed. It is expected to be completed in September.

NEW BIKE RACKS New bike racks funded by the P&F will be installed in the next couple of weeks in the bike area at the back of the community room. The bike area will now be locked during the day so it will be safe for students to leave their bikes and scooters there. Student leaders will lock it each morning at 9am and then unlock it at 3:30pm. The P&F have funded the new bike racks which will cost approximately $700 and the synthetic grass for the new basketball court at a cost of: $9,700. Many families have contributed to this through the P&F fundraising events and have contributed to providing these facilities for our students. Thank you. MEET WITH THE PRINCIPAL AFTERNOON TEA – Monday 2 August This is an opportunity for parents to meet informally with me and to ask questions, hear about what is happening in the school and meet other parents. It will be from 1:50pm – 2:50pm on Monday 2 August before assembly in the staffroom. All parents are welcome to come and meet together at anytime during that time. SAFETY IN TRAVELLING TO SCHOOL Vic Roads have produced a number of informative brochures about road safety around schools. Attached to this WHAM is a very good brochure „Safe to School – How to drop off and pick up children safely‟ . It is a good reminder to students and parents about the importance of safety around schools on the roads. Further information is available from the Vic Roads website at: www.vicroads.vic.gov.au . CHINESE STUDENT VISIT The Chinese student visit that Milgate was to host in July with students from a school in China, has been postponed by the school in China. It is likely to take place in 2011. Term 3 Already!! Can you believe that we are already half way through

the year. There are some great things happening in the

level during this term. We will be continuing to build on

our skills in Literacy and Numeracy as well as focusing

our attention on Australian history. To add to the

classroom program, we will also be heading off to camp

at Mount Evelyn in Week 8 and the Year 4’s will be

undertaking a bike education program in Week 9. So

there are lots of rich learning experiences planned to

help our Level 3’s continue on their learning journey.

Level 3

Years 3 and 4

A B C

Year 4 Bike Education Notices with more information on the

bike education program will be sent

home in the early part of the term. It is

important that all students have their

bike and safety helmet checked and in

good working order ready for the

program. Cooperation from parents

with this preparation would be greatly

appreciated.

Australia’s Got Talent Our Integrated Studies unit has a history focus. We

will be learning about our country by looking at

famous Australians and the contributions they have

made throughout history. We will be using media

such as video clips, songs and pictures as well as

written material to identify Australian icons and

discover Australians who have impacted our society

over time.

Active Maths This term we will be focusing on areas in maths

such as fractions and decimals. Maths learning

is easier when it is applied to real life situations

so wherever possible we try and make

connections between everyday experiences

and our maths. We also try to make maths

hands on or active to facilitate learning

Safe to school How to drop off and pick up children safely

keeping victorians connected

Obey these signs

40km/h sign All school speed limits across the State are clearly signposted. Look out for the speed signs near schools and slow down to improve safety for children.

Children crossing When the flags are displayed at a children‟s crossing, you must stop for pedestrians who are waiting to cross or who have started crossing. You must remain stopped until the

crossing is clear. These rules apply even if there is no crossing supervisor.

No parking It is important that you don‟t park in any area where this sign is displayed. No standing No standing means you must not stop at the kerb for any reason.

Bus zone Take extra care and be on the lookout near school bus stops as children may be trying to cross the road nearby.

What you can do

Supervise children in or near traffic.

The best way for children to learn to be safe on the roads is under your guidance, in real traffic, in everyday situations. Until children are about 10 or 11 years of age they do not have the necessary skills and physical abilities to be safe on their own so providing supervised practice is important.

Walk or cycle to school with your child.

Take the healthy option. If you can‟t walk the whole way, consider parking a few streets away and walking the rest of the way. Children under the age of 12 are allowed to ride on footpaths and so can adults riding with them.

Respect the road rules and parking signs.

It is important that parents park legally to provide a safer environment for children.

Double parking restricts the view of drivers, forces children onto the road and obstructs the flow of traffic.

Parking within 20 metres before a designated school crossing or 10 metres after is illegal.

Wait on the same side of the road as your child.

Meet your child at the school gate to avoid your child dashing across the road.

If picking up your child from the bus stop, wait on the same side as the bus.

If you need to drive to school, get your child into the habit of using the car’s kerbside doors and ensure your child is using a booster seat or correctly adjusted seatbelt.

The safest doors are kerbside doors, away from traffic. For information about Victoria‟s child restraint road rules, visit vicroads.vic.gov.au/ChildRestraints

Participate in the development of a safe drop off and pick up strategy for your school.

Raise this issue with your school council and participate in the development of a „safe to school‟ strategy. Visit vicroads.vic.gov.au/safetoschool for more information.
