Our mission at First Presbyterian
Church of the Covenant is: To
awaken all people to our need for a
life-changing encounter with the
living Lord Jesus Christ, and to
encourage and equip each one to
become His fully devoted follower.
It’s time to celebrate! Britney Knight is going to be
ordained and installed as a Minister of
Word and Sacrament at First Presbyterian
Church of the Covenant!
On Saturday, March 7th at 3:30 we will gather in the sanctuary for a service of ordination and installa-tion. This is a life-changing step in Britney’s call to ministry and an exciting new chapter in the life of our church!
After the worship service we will enjoy dinner together in Knox Hall, Reservations required for the dinner. Don’t miss this special event in the life of our congregation!!
Don’t forget to set your clocks one hour ahead, when you go to bed on Saturday night, March 7th …..
Or you might be late to worship & Faith Formation on Sunday morning !!
A Word from Pastor Chris
Our Lenten series this year is “Messy People, Merciful God.” As we worship through Lent we will be concentrating on the book of Judges. After Joshua led the tribes of Israel into the Promised Land he called the people to be faithful to their covenant with God by obeying the commands of the Torah. And if they do this, they will show all the other nations what God is like. Judges begins with the death of Joshua and tells the story of Israel’s failure to obey the Torah.
The Israelites had a hard time keeping their promise to God. They were easily pulled away to worship other gods, but God keeps coming back to them. When they cry for mercy God raises up a new judge. And for a time the Israelites obey. But each new judge becomes increasingly flawed and sinful. In Judges we see a messy people and a merciful God. In worship, during our time of confession, everyone is invited to come forward and participate in our “Messy People, Merciful God” activity. This will be different and a lot of fun! Your participation is always an invitation, never a demand. March 1 “The Cycle Begins” Judges 2:1-5, 16-23; 3:1-5 Communion March 8 “Expect the Unexpected: Deborah” Judges 4 March 15 “The Dangers of Success: Gideon” Judges 7 March 22 “Dark Times: Jephthah” Judges 11 March 29 “A Shadow in the Darkness: Samson” Judges 16 April 5 “The Need for a King” Judges 21:24-25 Palm Sunday & Communion
A Hot, Pot-Luck “Mess” for March
Covenant Connections will again switch to a modified pot-luck meal for Lent. Jack
and Kevin will prepare an entrée, salad and beverages. Diners are asked to bring an
appetizer, side dish, or dessert to share with 50. No dinner fee will be charged, but a
basket will be provided for suggested donations of $3 per person. Sometimes we end
up with 5 potato dishes, other times 10 desserts. That’s Pot LUCK! And that isn’t the
“mess” referred to by this article’s title. The “mess” is us. Messy People. Broken peo-
ple. And a Merciful God. We will explore this Lenten theme with bible readings,
hymn, prayer and a special activity each week after dinner. ** Remember: on March
11 and 18 we will meet in the Fidelis room on the second floor while the shelter re-
sides in Knox Hall.
“Prayers & Potato Soup” Thanks It took a team of 25+ congregation members and friends to help create the February 9 worship service and soup
lunch at the Rotary Pavilion at Presque Isle. From the praise band to the kitchen crew to the fire builders and
snow shovelers to the van loaders/unloaders (5 trips!) to the staff…thank you, all! Over 140 turned out to the
worship service for which God provided a lovely winter wonderland setting. Special thanks to Rebecca
Stoczynski and the Worship/Music and Hospitality/Membership committees for their leadership. Watch for
another off-site service one Sunday during the summer!

THE BIG EVENT 2020: “WHERE’S THE LIGHT ?”
Sunday Suppers ~ March 2020
Sunday Supper will be served by the following congregations in March. If you know someone from these con-gregations, please thank them for being partners in ministry with FPCC.
March 1: Asbury United Methodist Church
March 8: Our Lady of Peace Church
March 15: Wayside Presbyterian Church
March 22: New Hope Presbyterian Church
March 29: The Gannon Gammas
As of this writing, Easter Sunday Supper, April 12th, is “up in the air.” Pat will be out of town as will a few others who are familiar with Sunday Supper. There is a need for someone from this congregation to step forward and help with minimal cooking, heating up vegetables, and organizing volunteers once they arrive on that day. Please contact Pat Tracy at 814-864-6118 or [email protected]. If someone will take the lead, then additional volunteers will be needed to serve the food. We will also be asking our regular guests to come and help serve. All food will be purchased so no one is being asked to prepare and bring anything on Easter Sunday. Please watch your Sunday bulletin for additional information if you are available to help on Easter Sunday, and please pray for someone to lead on Easter so that supper can be served.
SOUP-er Fundraiser
16 families or teams prepared soups to sample for the youth group’s “SOUP-er Bowl of Caring” Fundrais-
er in late January. The youth designated Erie’s International Institute as the recipient of the $370 raised.
Fadel Machaal, an interpreter with the Institute, visited Covenant Connections on February 5 to receive
the check and tell about the 100 years of the Institute welcoming refugees to Erie. The winning soup was
a wedding soup prepared by Sue Pease, her daughter Brenna and granddaughters Kate & Ellie. Thanks to
all who prepared and shared soups! Thanks to all who voted with their dollars!

NEW exhibit: Mapping Erie
Gannon students’ final Geographic Information Software (GIS) projects are on display in the
church’s Community Gallery this month. Students in Dr. Chris Magno’s Spatial Justice class
researched and mapped many aspects of the city, from green space locations to solar panel
installation possibilities to food deserts, crime statistics and more. Stop in. Bring a friend.
Learn about Erie and how this technology is helping the City and nonprofits tackle relevant issues.
Cooking for Crowds? Are you involved with Fellowship/Hospitality at church? Covenant Connections? Bereavement?
Sunday Suppers? Our Neighbors’ Place? Campus Ministry? Please plan to attend Penn State

Gannon’s Beyer Hall, 4th floor. International students will be attending prior to their
“International Night”. You will become “Cooking for Crowds” certified and the church will pay.

Global Students ~ Coffee, Cookies!
75 Gannon students (global and domestic) and staff gathered in the
commons area outside of Gannon’s Global Students Office for cof-
fee, tea and heart cookie decorating on February 13. The event was
hosted by the church with Carol Beach and her buddies Cindy and
Janet led church members, staff and students in the cookie project—
yummm! Lorie Fritts, Mary Concoby, Marlene Metzler (and grand-
daughters), Jack Jones, Rachel Kennedy and Seph Kumer shared
snacks and conversation with students on their turf. New church-
student relationships were formed proving “Church” is more than a
building or what happens inside that building.
Fun with Students !
54 Countries Represented at Gannon!
Students from 54 different countries are currently studying at
Gannon. Wow! Your chance to experience some of the global flavor
and music they represent is Saturday, March 28 at 6:00pm. Plan
now to attend Gannon’s “International Night”. A favorite of church
members, this is another great campus ministry opportunity.
Show international students (who express interest in First
Covenant) that you are interested in them. Visit with students at
their “home away from home”: Gannon
It all begins with tasting small samples from participating countries around tables in the GU Rec
Center (West 4th, between Peach & Sass). When everyone has their plates (and bellies) full, cul-
tural presentations (dancing, singing, poetry, playing folk instruments) begin. The night is com-
pletely presented by Gannon’s international students and faculty. 400 attend. Students from
6 countries will be cooking in the church kitchen on March 27 & 28. Tickets are $15.00 and avail-
able at gannontickets.com
Learn something new. Give students the chance to tell you about their food and culture.
Experience a little college life. Show students they are loved! Travel around the world without
leaving Erie…
Gannon TGIF Monthly
Worship & Dinner Gathering
Gannon Campus Ministry has been holding monthly Fri-
day night worship and dinner gatherings at the church.
And the next one is March 13th , from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
These are completely student-led, ecumenical, joyful
events. And you are invited to assist our campus minister
Rachel Kennedy and the students with set-up, dinner
prep, and even join in on the beauty of 50 students
worshiping in the church’s third floor lounge.
Please contact Rachel to offer your
assistance: 412.849.7826
Increased Buiding Use, Neighborhood Relevance, Hospitality…
Three of the four church “pillars” are often met when groups meet at the church. One example is the use of the
church kitchen (second time!) by Gannon’s Black Student Union (BSU). Students baked for a Valentine’s Day
fundraiser. Gannon’s BSU members are no strangers to the church. Past campus minister Kyle Schumacher
began a relationship that has continued to grow. BSU members were Study Space hosts one evening during
December and plan to return in April. A great campus ministry connection.
Other recent examples include 2 Syrian wedding-related Knox Hall rentals and a 1-yr. birthday party rental of the
3rd floor youth lounge in January/February, another 1-yr. birthday rental of the Fidelis room in March, an “Our
West Bayfront” community gathering in the Parlor, and many more. In fact, the rental demand seems to be off to
a roaring start in 2020. Thank God for the building entrusted to us. Thank God for the community study that set
these “pillars” or “priorities”. Thank God for a congregation growing in its understanding of “welcome” and
“outreach”. Thank God for a way to be good stewards of space and generate additional income. Thank God.
Make Lunch at the City Mission in March
The church’s student partners from Gannon (ESL students) will be on their Spring Break for the regular first-Thursday-of-the-month lunch. Your help is needed. Prepare and serve lunch with ECM leaders for 150 guests from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 5. Contact Linda Holmes, the church’s City Mission Lunch Coordinator, if you would like to help: 490-9157 or [email protected]
