KERRANG MAGAZINE

Page 2: Textual research 2

- Kerrang complies with the conventions of most magazines by using 3 colours. The main 2 colours are red and yellow; primary colours. These are bright and catch the readers attention. The third colour is white, which is a contrast to the black clothes that Dave Grohl is wearing in the main image.

- There are a number of small pieces of text scattered around the cover such as ’Win!’ and ‘Exclusive!’ that subtly influence the reader. Including a competition of some sort will most likely make the reader feel as though they are getting something for nothing.

- The list of artists to the right of the cover shows the reader the kind of people who are mentioned inside the magazine and appeals to a wider audience depending on the artists they like.

- The contents page sticks to the same colour scheme as the front cover. This creates consistency.

- The bright colours of the subheadings and page numbers help the reader find what they are looking for easily.

- The note from the editor at the bottom of the page makes it more personal, as the reader will feel as though the editor is talking to them personally.

- As with most magazines, black and white is used for photos of older artists.

- Offers and competitions encourage a reader to buy the magazine.

- Lily Allen is wearing a baggy tartan shirt. This type of clothing is typically associated with punk, which is a contrast to Lilly’s image as she is a pop singer. This could connote that she is trying to be different or change people views of her.

- Her name is in red while the rest of the text is in black. This shows that she is bold and stands out.

- She is positioned on the right of the page which could show a darker side to her personality.
