Nonwovens have been one of the fastest growing, most developing and promising sector in

the global textile industry. Nonwovens are unique, high-tech, engineered fabrics made from

fibres, which are used in a wide range of applications and products and has got potential to

cater the needs of special application. Nonwoven can act as base material for numerous

applications in technical textiles like protective clothing, interlinings and garment, shoes,

automobile industry, geotextiles, leather goods and coating substrates, upholstery, furniture,

floor-coverings, building and roofing and civil engineering etc.

India represented 6% of the Asian nonwoven's market (2.6 million tons), according to

estimates from the Asia Nonwoven Fabrics Association (ANFA), which projected this figure for

2016. India presents potential opportunities in the fields, from hygiene to automotive and

filtration. India has a huge and growing domestic market, which is expected to grow to $140

billion in 2020. This huge growth could provide significant opportunities for exporters in India

and potential foreign investors in the country. The nonwovens industry continues to be an

extremely important manufacturing-based field that will continue to grow in both developing

and developed markets, simultaneously. Nonwoven converting sector is another big

opportunity in the field of technical textiles. New entrepreneurs should get into the converting

business as small-scale industry segment, which requires much less investment. This is safe

and cost effective way for the Indian entrepreneurs to develop the market of Nonwovens and

Technical Textiles.

Considering growth potential of this sector, under the scheme of 'Technology Mission on

Technical Textiles' (TMTT) to promote them and Nonwovens in India, Ministry of Textiles has

designated DKTE'S Textile and Engineering Institute as Centre of Excellence (CoE) in

Nonwovens. With a basic objective to develop the nonwoven sector and to compliment

nonwoven industry by providing technical support, testing services, prototype development

facilities, training and other necessary facilities under one roof for the manufacturers of

Nonwovens and Technical Textiles. All necessary facilities have been established and

operational at this centre. DKTE-CoE has a Needle punching line from one of the best

nonwoven machinery manufacturer i.e. Trutzschler Nonwovens, Germany, Thermal bonding

technology and hot calendar from Yamuna Machine works, India. Industry is set to benefit with

these facilities. We appeal to the esteemed entrepreneurs in this industry to avail all the

facilities at this center.

Book Publication

Prof. R.N.Narkhedakar published a book titled “Changes in Yarn Cross-Section Shapes

during Textile Processing”. Yarn cross-section plays an important role in determining the

mechanical, aesthetic and comfort properties of the fabrics made from them. After the

yarn formation, the yarn is processed through different processes. During this, different

forces are acting on the yarn surface due to which the fibers in the yarn get displaced from

their place, which leads to change in the cross-section of yarn. The wet processing of the

textile fabric dominantly affects the yarn cross-sectional shape and area also. In this book

the detailed study of effect of these all processing stages on the yarn cross-section shape

is discussed with the relevant reasoning.

The textile industry is always in search of innovative production-techniques to improve the productivity and quality. However, society requires new techniques, which are environment-friendly. Plasma surface treatments show distinct advantages in this respect because; they are able to modify the surface properties of inert materials without affecting the overall desirable bulk properties. For fabrics, cold plasma treatments require the development of reliable and large scale systems. Now, such systems exist and the use of plasma physics in industrial solutions is rapidly increasing. Three main effects can be obtained on textile surfaces depending on the treatment conditions: the cleaning effect, the increase of micro-roughness-etching and the production of radicals to obtain hydrophilic, hydrophobic or reactive surfaces. Plasma polymerization or grafting, which is the deposition of solid polymeric materials at nano level with desired properties on textile substrates, gives long lasting results. What is plasma?

thSir William Crooks (1879), M. Faraday (1880) suggested concept of 4 state of matter and Irving Langmuir (1926) used the term Plasma; however plasma was not a strange thing. Lightening in rainy season and stars in sky are examples of natural plasma. In the laboratory, application of electromagnetic power to the processing gas generates plasma medium comprising a dynamic mixture of ions, electrons, neutrons, photons, free radicals, molecules and polymeric fragments. The overall system being neutral and at room temperature it allows functionlisation of textile substrate. It is acknowledged to be effective surface engineering tool due to:B Wide range of physical, chemical and thermal properties allowing tailoring of surface with high precisionB Generation at low temperature avoiding destruction of textileB Non-equilibrium nature offering new research areaB Dry and environmental-friendly naturePlasma Reactor

-2 -3Low Pressure (10 to 10 mbar) Plasma is a mature technology and established in electronic industry. It offers high reactive species with uniform glow and the generation is non-thermal. However, batch processing in closed chamber does not meet the requirements of continuous bulk production of textile. Therefore, atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasma (APP) was evolved to fulfill textile needs. Different kinds of APP viz. corona discharge, dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD) are available for textile modification. Use of plasma in textilePlasma technique is being used for textile surface modification to improve functionality such asB Anti-felting/shrink-resistance of woolen fabricsB Hydrophilic enhancement for improving wetting and dyeingB Hydrophobic enhancement of water and oil-repellent textilesB Removing the surface hairiness in yarnB Anti-bacterial fabrics by deposition of silver particles in the presence of plasmaB Room-temperature sterilization of medical textilesB Improved adhesion between textiles and matrix used for coating, composite and laminationB Atmospheric plasma-based graft polymerisation of textiles and nonwovens having different functional properties

on the face and back side of the fabric B Flame-retardant coating using monomer vapor (halogen and/or phosphorus) in combination with nitrogen

and/or siliconB Silicon coating of air-bag fabrics using cross-linked silicon B Scouring of cotton, rayon, polyester fabrics using a non-polymerisable gases (N , O , NH , He) followed by wet 2 2 3

treatment for removing the impuritiesB Durable antistatic properties using PU-resin and plasma processingB Electro-conductivity of textile yarns by surface plasma depositionThis high surface specific technique can be used with negligible amount of water with rapid development, lower energy consumption and simultaneous complex and multifunctional reactions can be achieved

Plasma technology – a lucrative option for value addition in textile products

The Adaptive Relay Valve Drive (ARVD) for Picanol's OMNIplus 800 air-jet weaving machine lowers air consumption and thus reduces energy costs.

Picanol NV, Belgium, provided the following information about its Adaptive Relay Valve Drive, which is featured on its OMNIplus 800 air-jet weaving machine.

Adaptive Relay Valve Drive (ARVD) automatically adapts the closing timing of the relay nozzle valves to the behaviour of the filling yarn. Instead of applying one setting for all the different picks, ARVD applies the best relay valve timing for each individual pick, thus reducing the overall air consumption.

At each insertion cycle, the winding timings from the prewinder are compared with a reference value by the machine's microprocessor. Since the filling insertion speed varies from one pick to another, it is not necessary for the relay nozzles to blow for the same amount of time at each pick. Consequently, the machine adapts the closing timings for the relay nozzle valves automatically. For a fast pick, the relay nozzle valves do not stay open very long. For a slow pick, they stay open longer. This is done from the second relay nozzle valve onwards.

Picanol notes that decreased air consumption reduces energy costs, and reduced blowing on the filling yarn reduces the number of broken picks. Also, Pick Repair Automation has a higher success rate because the type of filling stops changes.

EDANA, INDA Release 2015 Nonwovens Standard Procedures CARY, N.C.-September 17, 2015-EDANA and INDA jointly announced the launch of the 2015 edition of standard procedures for the nonwovens and related industries.

These Nonwovens Standard Procedures help technically define the nonwovens industry, with specifiers for the properties, composition, and specifications of its products. Offering harmonized language for the industry across the USA and Europe, and recognized by many other individual markets, the procedures offer a way for the nonwovens industry to communicate both across the globe, and within the supply chain to ensure that product properties can be consistently described, produced, and tested.

The harmonized methods contained in the Nonwovens Standard Procedures (NWSP) edition include 95 individual test procedures and guidance documents to support applications across the nonwovens and related industries, and are available on both www.inda.org and www.edana.org.

“Nonwovens Standard Procedures is designed to provide a standard series of test methods of the various properties desired in nonwovens and engineered fabrics. It is an indispensable resource for innovators and product developers to communicate with buying influences and ensure their products meet the exact specifications demanded by markets and customers. Additionally, laboratory personnel will benefit with enhanced accessibility to the most comprehensive body of nonwovens test methods available in the industry,” said Dave Rousse, INDA President.

Latest Ring Spinning Developments Germany-based Oerlikon Schlafhorst's ring spinning product portfolio comprises roving frames for cotton spinning and classic and compact ring spinning machines. The roving frame technology includes four independent drive shafts, decentralized spindle drive motors and the Zinser EasySpin intelligent control system. The technology ensures low roving break rates and high speeds, and offers a range of customized automation solutions.

Oerlikon Schlafhorst's Zinser CompACT3 system can customize compact yarn structure from a central setting. The compact vacuum and self-cleaning compact units are independently adjustable for a uniform yarn. Cleaning and maintenance costs are also minimized.

Germany-based Spindelfabrik Suessen GmbH's TwinDisc bearing and numerous other inventions have enabled rotor speeds up to 150,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) and higher. Its top weighting arms - including the HP-GX 3010 to process staple fibers up to 65 millimeters (mm) long and drafts of up to 80, and the HP-GX 4010 for roving machines - are equipped with plate springs, and, Suessen reports, meet the highest demands of high-end spinning mills.

The ACP Quality Package combines Suessen's Active Cradle (AC) with the new PinSpacer to improve the drafting

process in short-staple ring spinning. The section between the front cradle opening and the front roller nipping line now also contributes to the drafting process in the main zone.

Suessen reports the ACP package considerably reduces yarn defect frequency and rare yarn faults, and also reduces the number of clearer cuts. Mass irregularity also is improved. The enhanced drafting process has nearly the same impact on the quality of conventional ring-spun yarns, single EliTe® yarns and EliTwist® yarns.

Suessen's COREflex® for spinning soft core yarns on ring and compact spinning machines features a new design. Working independently from the top weighting arm, the attachment ensures simultaneous, smooth traverse movement of fiber strand and filament regardless of speed. The filament feed roller can be adjusted independently in two planes and does not touch the front top roller.

Japan-based Toyota Industries Corp. claims its RX240 ring spinning frame series is the most versatile available. In addition to the high-performance basic machine, Toyota offers auxiliary devices said to bring unique all-in-one characteristics to the RX series. The EST compact yarn unit allows production of yarn counts from Ne 6 to Ne 300, thanks to the unique inverter-controlled adjustable suction pressure. The EST unit can easily be detached to switch to regular yarn production and vise-versa.

Toyota's proprietary E-draft fancy yarn producing unit features an integrated independent three-roller drive system and fancy-yarn software program, enabling production of all types of fancy yarns.
