Ais for Acme

Acme is a ghost town that used to be a coal mine town. There were 300 families living there at one time. The bridge that was across the Tongue River went to the coal mine and the tipple. The tipple was where the coal was crushed and loaded on a train. The swinging bridge went to the trolley station. You can still see parts of this bridge. There used to be a school, theatre, post offi ce, baseball fi eld and many houses. It would have been fun to live there. You can see the Acme Power Plant but you can’t go inside. What dangers would be in the plant?

The Bozeman Trail was started by John Bozeman and John Jacobs as a gold rush trail to Montana. Many people used the trail to get to Fort Reno, Fort Phil Kearny and Fort C.F. Smith. The trail

goes right through Sheridan County. Help the covered wagon travel the Bozeman Trail to

Fort Phil Kearny.

D is for DaytonThe town of Dayton was named after Joseph Dayton Thorn. In 1911 Mrs. Susan Wissler was elected mayor of Dayton; she was the fi rst women mayor in Wyoming and maybe even in the United States of America. There is a bell tower in Dayton that was moved four times. The last move was to the park, where you can see it today. The tower’s bell was used to call fi refi ghters when there was a fi re.

Eaton’s Dude Ranch is located by the eastern slopes of the Bighorn Mountains and is the grand daddy of all dude ranches. A dude ranch is a place where visitors come to stay and work along side the cowboys. When it started,

it cost $25.00 a month to stay at the ranch. Today people pay a lot more. This is one of Eaton’s horses. Can you add the mane, tail, saddle,

stirrups, and a rider? Horses Name: ____________________________

The Sheridan Flour Mill used to be really famous because many people came from different countries to buy this delicious fl our. They also made and sold feed for animals. Today, one part of the Mill is a motel and the grain elevator is empty.

Gis for Ghost

Miss Kate is the most famous Sheridan ghost. She supposedly haunts the Sheridan Inn, but she has never hurt anyone. She was a housekeeper at the Inn for many years. Her ashes are even buried in the wall on the third fl oor. Kate straightens things up and some people say they see her rocking chair rocking with no one in it.

Look in the picture and see if you can fi nd: a funny face, a book in hands, Sheridan Inn, and fi ve ghosts.

H is for Helen Brinton who lived with her brother, Bradford Brinton, at what is now called Bradford Brinton Memorial. The house was built in 1892. Now the Bradford Brinton is a museum and an art gallery. I would go there because inside this old house you can fi nd

a special reading alcove, old farm toys, a letter from Abraham Lincoln, a grand piano, 5,000 books, a time line frieze,

buzzers to call the maid, silver saddles with matching bridles, a cowboy hat ashtray, and silver horses.

I is for Iron Works

The Sheridan Iron Works was a company that made things from metal. They had the fi rst and biggest neon sign in Sheridan. Their slogan was: “If it’s made of metal, we can make it or repair it.” They made tanks, farm supplies, sewer tops, grenade casings, and clutch plates for army trucks.Circle the things that are made of iron.

Jis for John D. LoucksIn 1882 the founder of Sheridan, Mr. John D. Loucks, bought the Mandel cabin for $50. One half of the cabin was used for a store and the other half was his home. You can still see this cabin at Whitney Commons, which is by the Sheridan Library.

14

K is for Kendrick Park

Did you know that Kendrick Park was named after John B. Kendrick? At one point, Kendrick Park had a little zoo. In front of the park are two statues of Lion-Dogs. They weigh over 600 pounds each! The Lion-Dogs are from China and they were used to guard the gates of shrines and temples. Look carefully to see that they are not exactly alike. Can you fi nd six differences between them?

15

You may notice the Little Blue School House is now white. One time two men went to get paint, but they went to the saloon on the way. They spent some of their money

there so they got cheaper bluish-grayish paint. Now the Little Blue School is a museum that is by

Tongue River Elementary School in Ranchester.

Monarch is a ghost town. When the coal mines of Monarch closed people had a week to move out. If you drive north on Interstate 90 you can still see the Monarch water tower near the Acme exit. It looks like an old fashion rocket ship. The St. Thomas

Church is still there too. At one time there were at least 1,000 people living in Monarch. The interurban trolley ended in

Monarch. The old cement pad of the trolley building can be seen from the Interstate.

This neat old building is now the home of the Beaver Creek Saloon. The saloon was once City Hall and the town jail. This building has two fl oors in it. When it was fi rst built it was a fi re station. The fi remen used horses for pulling the fi re wagon out through the big doors. You can still see a lot of Sheridan’s neat old buildings on Main Street.

The Cady Opera House was built in 1893. A fi re destroyed the third fl oor of the building in 1906. When the fi re happened, the show playing was called The Runaway Match. After the third fl oor caught fi re, it was removed and the building was never an opera house again. The

fi rst fl oor of the Cady Opera House is now a restaurant called Sanford’s.

See if you can draw the other half of the Cady Opera House. It is a mirror image of this half.

Sheridan Pressed Bricks were made by the Sheridan Pressed Brick and Tile Company. The fi rst SPB bricks were made out of clay that was dug from hillsides east of Sheridan and then dried in the sun. The company later installed fi ve kilns and could produce two million bricks per year. Many local buildings were made from SPB bricks. Q is forQuiet

The Connor Battlefi eld is very quiet now, but once it was not. In 1864 there was a great battle between the Arapahoe Indians and American soldiers. 1,000 mothers and children were killed. If you are quiet in the Connor Battlefi eld Park in Ranchester, you may see some of our local animals. All the letters you need to spell the word “INDIAN” are hidden somewhere in the picture. Ris for Railroad

Wood for railroad ties came from high on the mountains. Tie hacks would cut down trees and trim off all of the branches. Then they would fl oat the logs down a wooden fl ume that was fi lled with running water. The tie hacks would stay up on the mountains in logging camps. Sometimes when they got time off they would ride the logs down to Dayton. It would be a fast ride down. Would you like to go for a ride?Follow the maze to the sawmill.

The Sheridan Inn’s grand opening was held on June 23, 1893. The Sheridan Inn is a well-known building and is a National Landmark. It used to be one dollar per night to stay there but

closed in 1965. Buffalo Bill is a famous part of the Inn’s history. He never actually owned the Sheridan Inn, but he

stayed there whenever he was in town.

The trolley was a bus that ran by electricity. It was green and white, with yellow stripes. They used to take men to the mines to work and also took the kids from the mining towns to high school in Sheridan. To go to Acme it cost 30 cents, Monarch 35 cents and to go to school it cost

4 cents. The trolley speed limit was about 20 miles per hour. You can take a ride on the new trolley and see some of Sheridan’s

historic spots.

U is for Underground Coal Miner

The miners used a black powder bomb to break the coal down. Then the larger pieces were smashed by picks. They put the coal in mining cars that were pulled by horses. Once out of the ground the cars were pulled by an electric chain to the top of the tipple. Here the car was dumped and the coal was separated by the size of the pieces. The best coal was shipped by railroad to customers.

V.A. stands for Veteran’s Administration. The V.A. is on the grounds of Fort Mackenzie. The government started to think about building Fort Mackenzie in 1898. When the fi rst

cavalry arrived a year later in June, 1899, the Fort was only a few wooden buildings. The Fort grew over the

years and there are many brick buildings that you can still see today.

There are many habitat zones in Sheridan County. Western Sheridan County is the Mountain/Forest zone where you might fi nd elk, or a moose by a stream. In the trees you might fi nd a mountain lion and look up to see a Red Headed Woodpecker. On the edge of the mountains are

the Foothills. Look for a bald eagle in the cottonwoods or a turkey in the grass. Eastern Sheridan County is Sagebrush Grasslands

where there are antelope, hawks, deer and prairie dogs. Draw each animal in the right habitat zone.
