There is a way to

plan the wedding

of your dreams

in one weekend.

The Bridal Extravaganza Show lets you meet and ask questions of wedding professionals ranging from DJs to Photographers, and everything in between. You’ll see fashion shows,

gowns galore, and meet more wedding vendors than you could possibly get to any other way.

You are coming to the show to 1. Gather infor-mation 2. compare prices and services 3. register for prizes 4. see the latest fashions 5. get great new ideas and 6. all this while having a ball with your favorite planning pals.

IF THESE HALLS COULD TALK:

A 30-year, Houston tradition, the Bridal Extrava-

ganza Show draws generation after generation

to its booths. Passed from mother to daughter,

sister to bridesmaid.

the Top20 MUST DO first Show Guide

1. Set your wedding date. 2. FIND AVAILABLE DATES: Some venues

book out more than a year in advance, so you’ll want to find the perfect venue and secure it immediately. If you have not set your wedding date, look for wedding facilities and their available dates.

3. Attend with an open mind. You will be sur-prised what items grab your attention.

4. Bring your checkbook. Vendors often have show discounts if you book at their booth.

...How to prepare for the Bridal Extravaganza Show 5. ASK QUESTIONS! This is your time to learn. It is a great time to get an ear full on products and services.

6. Visit every booth with an open mind. You might not be interested in a photo booth today, but you could change your mind tomorrow. You will have all the information you need.

7. Watch all the fashion shows. Notice how the gowns look, move, fit on the models and envision how they will look on you. Narrow down your options.

8. Plan to spend the entire day at the George R. Brown.

9. Walk up the aisle on one side, then down the other side of the same aisle. This way you will see every vendor in the show.

10. Snap photos of your favorite booths.

11. Bridal show 101: Put an A if you really like the vendor, B if you might be interested, then ignore or discard information from the rest.

12. Bring your calendar so you will have your bridal shower, rehearsal, wedding, and other important dates handy.

13. Create a special e-mail account dedicated to wedding planning.

You can give this to vendors you meet at the show. Many will e-mail special offers to you.

14. Celebrate your status. Wear bride-to-be t-shirts, tiaras, corsages and more.

15. Be sure to say hello to any vendors you have already hired.

16. Don’t be overwhelmed! Have fun with the planning process.

17. Many exhibitors book up quickly on popular wedding dates, so don’t wait long

after the show before you decide to call or utilize their services. Generally speaking, there is a rush of appointments immediately after a bridal show.

18. Attend with a plan. If you know you need a photographer, come to the show and book your photographer.

19. Take time and enjoy yourself. Be sure to taste some cake!

20. Sensible shoes, dress comfortably

YYou said yes!

You are not the world’s first bride. Many before you have dreamed, planned and worried about their wedding day. You can read their stories in the Real Weddings features throughout this issue. These are real brides, recently married and willing to share their advice so you can have a memorable event. Learn from their mistakes, be inspired by their creativity and push the envelope to make your dreams come true. The resounding theme from brides across our great state is,“Don’t sweat the small stuff. ”Truthfully, your guests don’t know what you planned. They are there to celebrate your love and support you on the big day, not critique linens, party favors or when the cake is cut. To them, your wedding is beautiful.

Use this issue to plan your attendance at the largest bridal event in the country.

Kim woke in the early morning hours to watch the sunrise; she had no idea it would be such a special day. From the time dan and Kim met, they made lists of romantic, fun and never done events to experience together. There were quite a few items they wanted to accomplish in 2013, but dan had a secret, special task. he wanted to watch the sunrise with Kim and ask for her hand in marriage. and he did just that on the morning of may 26, 2013 in galveston, tX.

an ancestor of the bride, John henry dillard, died in the battle of the alamo. his remains are interred with those of davy Crockett,

Kim’s Adviceit’s fun to plan your own wedding, but hire a wedding planner at least six weeks in advance

to finish the details. Friends and family members are able to relax and enjoy the event

when everything is running smoothly.

shared folders (like google drive or dropbox) are great to save information. providing access to as many collaborators as you

want (parents, best man, maid of honor, etc.) allows tedious things to be done more quickly. That said, avoid having tOO many collaborators because it increases the chance

of mistakes, like deleting a needed file.

Blessed UnionJessica and adam met at church when they were in High school. They dated for 7 ½ years before he asked for her hand, on stage, while leading the church youth group.

it made sense for christ the redeemer catholic church to play host to their wedding mass and reception. Jessica worked extensively with darryl & co and lg entertainment to get the perfect look for the venue; her mother cried with joy when she saw the transformation of the giant church cafeteria. a family friend, stephanie Ferguson, handled day of details and stationary. design and logos were extra special; her older sister created them, with love.

The first day she shopped with family she found her dress at alfred angelo, the candelight gown from the sapphire collection; complete with chapel train. bridesmaids chose their own dresses (style and color) and shoes were dyed by Jessica’s uncle at his shoe repair shop, darensbourg shoe repair ii. boys selected their favorite

super hero shirts to wear under their tuxedos. she turned to master baking artist Tammy allen for the cakes. Hers: circle and square cakes; his: Houston Texans beer cake.

Her grandmother passed a week before the wedding. Jessica carried her picture and a broach that served as her something blue and something old. “she had the best seat in the house; from heaven with no pain,” says the bride.

They made their get away in a Ferrari from Platinum motor cars. as part of a wedding gift, the groom drove the car all day. They honeymooned in Jamaica and reside in cypress, TX.

– laurette m. Veres

Jessica’s advice: make a list of things you know you don’t

want—it is easier to say what you don’t want, than what you do want

make sure you have a “day of coordinator,” whether it is a family friend or someone you hired, you will have a much more relaxed day knowing someone is taking care of everything for you.

The hardest part of any wedding planning is the guest list. expect aggravated arguments and big decisions about who is on and off the list.

make sure to compose your bridal party with people that are important to you and will be there with you through thick and thin. Keep in mind, these people will end up spending a lot of money to be in your wedding, so don’t forget to show your respects to them and thank them for being by your side.

BRITNEY CURRY WESLEY SAVELLMay 24, 2014&

Young Love, True LoveWes and Britney only exchanged a few friendly smiles and hellos at Cy-Fair High School, but she had caught his eye. In 2005 Wes passed Britney an incredibly sweet introduction note with his phone number. That led to more notes and late night phone calls. The high school sweethearts have been through several phases and achieved milestones together. In 2013 they had a new house built; the night before their final walk throughWes proposed. The love story continues.

Britney’s Advice:Sometimes at your wedding it can be hard to go around to every single one of your guests and talk with them one on one. “Take a moment to thank your guests for coming to celebrate. Wes and I did this right after the toasts and right before our cake cutting so that everyone was there and could hear. It meant a lot to our guests and now that I think about it, it made up for not being able to get around to each and every person.”

the simple wedding cake with a whipped ombre effect topped with fresh peach dahlias and fuchsia stock. Jessie also captured Wes’s wants and hobbies in his groom’s cake. After the wedding, the couple honeymooned at the Buccaneer Hotel in St. Croix.

Chic Vintage VibeMelanie, a medical sales person, and Brett, a real estate professional, met through common friends. however, it was man’s best friend (actually Melanie’s) that sealed the engagement.Brett tied the ring with a pink ribbon around her dog’s neck. when Melanie finally saw the ring, Brett was on one knee ready to propose.

Melanie’s Advice:“Try to enjoy the ride. You will never make everyone happy during the process and you have to accept that. The day goes by extremely fast and in the blink of an eye it’s over. Take in every moment and embrace it all. This is the beginning of a new chapter in your life, you are blessed, make it worth the ride. i have always said to live in the moment and take each day as it comes. stay positive and remember, no matter what happens, good or bad you are one of few that has found love”.

Photography by ChrisWPhoto.com

Melanie found the perfect gown at Brickhouse Bridal in the woodlands. Unfortunately, the dress was a sample of gowns coming out the following year. The dress’s australian designer heard of Melanie’s dilemma, secured the new dress and personally fitted Melanie into her gown.

on august 30, 2013, Melanie and Brett tied the knot at the Bell Tower on 34th, a great fit for their chic-vintage theme. Bavarian Cakery created their white, traditional cake with fruit puree and amaretto. a candy bar replaced the groom’s cake with personalized bags and large glasses full of candy. Pictures from the photo booth were autographed by guests and saved for the bride and groom.

Melanie and Brett honeymooned on an eleven-day tour of italy.

Friends First, Marriage Nextemily ann Colbert and mitchell lamar loftis wed in fort worth, texas on march 15, 2014 at Christ Chapel bible Church. a reception followed at ashton depot, which perfectly fit their fort worth style.

The couple first met at texas a & m University. Their initial friendship soon blossomed into romance.

mitch surprised emily with all of their crazy and silly pictures from the beginning of their friendship, all the way through

their dating, and their love story. it wasn’t until the final picture that emily even knew it was a proposal! instead of saying yes, she said, “Thank you.” “i still kick myself for this,” she says. That was not the end of the surprise. after the “Thank you,” emily’s family and friends were waiting at her future in-law’s house to celebrate. The couple saved all of the pictures and sayings to later put in a book for their future children.

The bride wore a fitted, mermaid gown with a beaded sweetheart top from Ventura’s bridal fashions in houston.

“Enjoy the wedding planning process. When you start getting frustrated remember the reason you are planning a wedding is because you are joining your life with the person you love. Compromise when necessary... it is his wedding too. Be true to your own style because the day of your wedding you want to feel you are in every detail. Delegate tasks because no one can do it all. Finally, don’t lose sleep over the details that didn’t go as planned because no one else noticed.”

- Sofia Beltran

Stay calm and enjoy the wedding. If you are having a military wedding, black bridesmaid gowns work perfectly. “I did not choose to have wedding colors. With the military uniforms it would have been too much of a rainbow so my bridesmaids wore black and the groomsmen not in uniform wore black tuxes with cream. The inside decor was white and champagne. Everything flowed nicely!”

- Amber Nelson

“Take advantage of the Bridal Extravaganza and the vendors you meet there. Take as many pamphlets and cards you can get your hands on. This will be very helpful when narrowing down your options.”

- Brittany Howell

1Know what you want, or at least be outspoken about

the things you do and do not like. It will make meeting with florists, photographers, caterers, etc. easier.

2 Have a schedule of everything that needs to be

done and when it needs to be done.

3Don’t wait too long to ask your bridal party to be your

bridal party! I asked almost two months after getting engaged and I think my friends started

wondering if they were going to be asked.

4Even if you don’t use a wedding planner/

coordinator the entire planning process, it is worth it to have someone the day of to coordinate all the vendors. I wasn’t stressed or worried about a thing because I knew we had someone else taking care of it. It made for a really fun day with my bridesmaids, mom, and grandmother as we got our hair and makeup done!!

5Most importantly, have fun while planning. There were

definitely times I let things or people stress me out too much and looking back, I know I shouldn’t have let things get to me. But overall, I had a lot of fun planning...why wouldn’t you? You’re planning such a fun night where you get to marry your best friend and be with all your family and friends so enjoy it.

Navy Blue is the new “it” wedding color. Paired with tones from rich ruby red to pale blush pink, navy can be seen everywhere in any season. Very popular in military weddings, navy blue enhances military uniforms while contrasting well with canary yellow, watermelon pink, and cream, or off shades of white.

When using navy blue as a primary color, make sure to choose lighter accents. Two really dark colors can be confusing to the eye or make your wedding feel dark. You want cheerful, happy guests!

When your dream day is over and guests have gone home, you’ll have powerful memories, and pictures. Jay Pifer from EVOKE Photography and Chris Wineinger from ChrisWPhoto.com share a few important tips on selecting the right wedding photographer.

“What do I look for in a photographer?” There is no simple answer. Certainly cost and availability are good places to start. Then there is style. According to Wineinger, photographers have their own style and shoot every wedding using that style; same photos, different people. “Make sure you look through some of their recent weddings

closely and completely, because your wedding should, and probably will look the same,” he says.

Once you find a photographer with your desired style, get to know them. Pifer recommends you go beyond face-to-face meetings. Spendtime on their blogs and read about them to gain a sense of who

they are as a person and understand their personality. Wineinger cautions, “You will be in close proximity to your photographer for seven or more hours on your wedding day! You need someone who will be a stress reliever, while still motivating you and your wedding party to get the shots needed.”

Many brides make the mistake of choosing their photographer from a website, then are disappointed with the quality of their pictures. Pifer says websites and photo albums showcase a small sampling of the photographer’s best work. “A typical wedding is usually around 1000 images so always ask to see all the images form a recent wedding! Then you will really know the quality of the photographer and what you are paying for.” he says another mistake brides make is accepting referrals

without researching the photographer. “don’t choose based off a recommendation from friends or vendors. What might have been a great fit for your friends might not be the same for you.”

There are lots of important decisions made when planning a wedding. Choosing the right person to capture and preserve your memories is the decision that will be reviewed every time someone looks at your album. do the research and pick the best fit for your wedding.photo: ChrisWPhoto.com

IIt’s one of Ireland’s grandest manors with immense, manicured grounds and world-class service. And it can be all yours for an ultimate destination wedding.

Ballyfin is a little over an hour from Dublin’s airport. During the first part of the drive, tall hedges acting as livestock fences mask views of the Irish countryside. However, driving southwest, the land begins to swell, flats become hills and hills grow into foothills. You and your wedding guests start seeing sheep grazing in lush green valleys and hillsides covered with the bright yellow flowers of oilseed rape, one of Ireland’s cash crops. Rock walls start replacing the hedges, mountains loom in the distance and the bright sunshine adds sparkle to the Emerald Isle.

A tall rock wall surrounds the estate; access is gained by calling the house via intercom. The windy, single paved lane leading to the majestic manor is lined with tall beech trees.

On clear spring days, the sun shines through the trees onto blooming blue bells beneath; the forest floor explodes in purple. Soon the impressive structure comes into view, staff members line the drive eager to greet.

The estate dates back to the 1600s. A very young, very rich landowner commissioned the current home in 1820. Sir Charles Coote and family enjoyed the estate for a hundred years. When Ireland won her independence, the Cootes sold the manor and moved to England; they had always considered

themselves English. The new owners used the property as a school for boys. The education continued here in the out buildings until just a few years ago. Many men on the Ballyfin staff are graduates of the school. The school did not have enough funds to keep up with maintenance and the estate fell into a state of disarray.

The current owners purchased the property in 2002 and began the 9-year arduous task restoring the main house to its original luster. The “within reason” originality (expect can have the entire property, everyone can stay on-

site and the kitchen staff can create unforgettable dining experiences. The grand, State Dining room can comfortably seat 50 for full service dinners; additional sleeping accommodations would have to be arranged. There is a ballroom for crowds up to 100. Outdoor ceremonies are risky. Irish weather goes “soft” every couple of days; the rains are hard to plan around.

The property consists of 600 acres, one square mile, with hiking/biking trails, gardens, streams and a four-acre lake. Touring gardens (on foot, bike,

electricity, running water, heat and a/c, etc.) has been accomplished using a recovered set of floor plans, photos and drawings. They traveled through Europe tracking down furniture and artwork the Cootes took when they left Ireland. Many pieces are back in the house.

The goal is to run Ballyfin as it was run in the early 1800s. Gardeners toil in the rock-walled gardens and orchards to harvest enough crops to sustain guests and staff for the entire year. Maids and maintenance crew work behind the scenes ensuring everything is in tiptop shape. Butlers fuss about opening doors, bringing coffee and generally spoiling the family. Your wedding party is the family, the modern day Cootes; expect leisure and bliss.

Sir Coote originally built the house as a showplace and his desire to impress has been recaptured in every detail of the 35,000 square foot mansion. The 20 bedrooms (all double occupancy but one) can accomodate up to 39 people. Large, glorious sitting rooms feature high, carved ceilings, large chandeliers, exquisite antique furniture and 17th century art; pure opulence. Your wedding weekend can feature receptions, dinners and teas, each in a different room; each room as impressive as the last. They even have a costume department if you want a 1800s themed bash.

Ballyfin is flexible on party size, but their sweet spot is 20-30 people. With that size group, brides

horseback, golf cart or horse and carriage), bird watching and picnicking are part of the daily norm. There are plenty more activities on the property to keep your guests busy: wine tastings, fishing, archery, tennis, and shooting sporting clays. Guests can be golfing in about 20 minutes; touring 16th and 17th century castles in 30-40.

For reasons unknown, Sir Coote had a watchtower erected on the highest point of the grounds. Built to look like 16th century ruins, the ominous structure resembles something from a Steven King book. Guests are attracted to the tower; it’s a popular picnic spot and has been host to several wedding proposals. The easy hike up to the tower goes through tunnels and by waterfalls. Historians believe it was built to entertain guests; nearly 200 years later it is still entertaining. Climbing to the top is a little more taxing, but the reward is sweeping 360-degree views.

Feelings of heartfelt bliss fill the dining room at virtually every meal. The chef sources local meats and seafood, and then combines them with the bounty from the on-site gardens to create fresh, flavorful meals. Spot on preparations, tantalizing sauces and some interesting foams are paired with vino from the cellar and great service for excellent dining.

For a heck of an Irish wedding, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow might be Ballyfin. Distinctive, impressive and memorable.
