Texas Test Administrator Online Training – Module 2 Text Narrative SCRIPT Melinda is a student who is in ninth grade and is new to the campus and the district. She is enrolled in Algebra I and will need to participate in the STAAR Algebra I test that is scheduled to be administered in three weeks. Per campus procedures, the campus test coordinator is notified on a daily basis about the registration of all new students, including Melinda. Since Melinda is new to the campus and the district, an answer document for Algebra I will have to be hand-gridded for Melinda.

SCRIPT Mr. McClain monitors first period study hall and will be administering the Algebra I test to his students that are enrolled in that class. Melinda was placed in his first period study hall class when she first enrolled in this school but was recently moved to another first period class. Mr. McClain prepares for the Algebra I test administration a day prior to testing by reviewing his test manual and checking his test session roster against his first period class roster. Melinda is included on his testing roster. Although he is curious as to why he will be testing Melinda since she is no longer in his study hall, he decides to leave it alone thinking that the campus test coordinator is more familiar with the ins and outs of test preparation than he is.

SCRIPT Mr. McClain runs into Melinda in the hall and tells her that she is on his list to test Algebra I with him the following day. Melinda is very shy and does not tell him that her new first period teacher, Ms. Benson, also told her to attend Ms. Benson’s test session. Melinda decides to go to Mr. McClain’s session since she has known him longer.

SCRIPT On Algebra I testing day, Mr. McClain takes attendance using his testing roster and notices that Melinda is present. He does not have an answer document with Melinda's name on it, but he does have a blank document and an extra test booklet, so he gives them to Melinda to use to take the test. Melinda and the class proceed to test.

SCRIPT On the day of testing, Ms. Benson is checking in students against her testing roster as they arrive at her first period classroom to take the STAAR Algebra I assessment.

SCRIPT After the students settle in the classroom, there is one name on the testing roster missing a checkmark—Melinda’s. Ms. Benson looks in her materials bin and finds Melinda’s hand-gridded answer document.

SCRIPT Although she doesn’t know Melinda very well, Ms. Benson is almost certain she had seen Melinda in school that morning.

SCRIPT From past experience, Ms. Benson knows that there is always the potential for an error to occur in the assignment of students, especially new students, to their respective test sessions. Instead of just marking Melinda absent on the roster and bubbling the “A” score code on the answer document, Ms. Benson elects not to take any chances and signals the need for assistance by placing her help sign outside her classroom door.

SCRIPT A monitor observes Ms. Benson’s help sign and notifies Ms. Wage, the campus test coordinator. Ms. Wage comes to the classroom, and Ms. Benson explains that Melinda has not arrived for the assessment. She tells Ms. Wage that she does not think that Melinda is absent.

SCRIPT Ms. Wage later resolves that Melinda had been mistakenly placed on two different testing rosters. Ms. Wage confirms that Melinda was inadvertently placed in Mr. McClain’s test session. Melinda is located in Mr. McClain’s class and allowed to complete the test. The answer document found in Ms. Benson’s bin is marked void.
