Message from President PowersThe Texas Leadership Society is the distinguished group of individuals

who have included The University of Texas at Austin in their estate

plans and set the example for others. Estate gifts support faculty and

research, provide scholarships and graduate fellowships, and keep

our libraries, laboratories, and facilities up to date.

Long-term planning is probably the most important thing we

do at the university. We’re always thinking ahead. When we build a

building, when we start a program, or when we hire a young faculty

member, we are making a commitment long into the future.

There will be students 10 years from now, 20 years from now, 30

years from now who will be able to come to The University of Texas

and look back and say their lives were transformed. They will be able

to go out and change the world because of the thoughtfulness and the

foresight of a planned gift that someone in our generation made.

Becoming a memberYou are recognized as a member of the Texas Leadership Society when you let us know about your estate gift. You can tell us about your gift in person, by email or letter, or by completing an Estate Intention Letter. By letting us know now that

you have made an estate gift, we can make sure that your gift will be used exactly as you intend.

What your gift can doGiving from individuals and families plays an important role in helping The University of Texas at Austin become the best public research university in the nation. Estate gifts designated to be used for the greatest needs of the university enable the president to address unforeseen needs, take advantage of limited-time opportunities, and access other sources of funding that require matching contributions. Gifts for the greatest needs of the university can be totally expendable when received or in the form of an endowed President’s Discretionary Fund that will provide annual support to be used at the president’s discretion.

An endowed gift is a way to make your support of the university permanent. Your gift is invested — never spent — and each year a distribution, like dividends on a mutual fund account, is made to your chosen program or area.

By selecting the title of your endowment, you can forever link your name, or that of a family member, friend, or organization, to scholarly excellence at the university. There are many endowment opportunities and funding levels available at the university — please contact us for details. Various types of endowments are listed below, but endowments can cover other purposes that may fall outside these general categories.

Discretionary funds can provide additional resources for use by the president of the university, by the dean of a college or school, or by the director of a center or program in consultation with a dean or unit director.

Student scholarships and fellowships

enable UT to attract and recognize the best undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of their financial circumstances. Your assistance allows students to concentrate on their coursework while participating more fully in extracurricular programs that will enhance their personal development.

Program endowments and excellence funds

support excellence in specific or general programs throughout campus. You can choose to support the area in which you earned your degree or another program that interests you.

Book and collection funds

advance scholarship and research at UT, enabling the purchase and maintenance by the university of books, maps, electronic resources, and special collections in the arts and sciences, humanities, and professional schools.

Chairs and professorships

are awarded to deans, department chairs, and outstanding faculty. These endowments are crucial to the university’s efforts to recruit and retain highly qualified teachers, researchers, and administrators.

How you can giveA wide range of giving options is available, allowing you to tailor a gift to your unique needs and interests. You can:

» Name the university as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, life insurance policy, group term insurance plan, bank or brokerage account.

» Name the university as the beneficiary of a will or trust.

» Make a gift that gives you income, contributing cash or other marketable assets during your lifetime to provide you and possibly a survivor with income for the rest of your life and the survivor’s life. Or you can include a gift in your estate plan that will provide lifetime income after your death to one or more survivors. After the passing of the life income beneficiaries, the university will use the remaining assets as you directed.

» Transfer assets to a trust that makes annual gifts to the university for a number of years with the trust assets then passing onto to loved ones at greatly reduced or totally eliminated gift or estate taxes, regardless of the final value that passes to loved ones.

Please use the following language when designating the university as a beneficiary:
