C hris burden’s early career was all about the intersection of art and danger. The 1970s saw him lying crucified with nails on the roof of
a volkswagen bug. In another piece, he was shot through the arm by an assistant — literally.
“It was a way to make art without making an object,” he says.
For the past four years, Burden has been working with a team of eight on a piece called Metropolis II. It’s a giant model of a city with 1,200 colorful little cars zooming at light-ning speed around it. On Saturday, the loud new installation will open at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
“As a young artist, I tried to figure out what sculpture really was,” Burden says, “and my conclusion was that human action, movement, performance in a certain sense, was the core of sculpture.”Burden has moved on from conceptual work and made lots of different stuff since then. He says this new sculpture of a city “kind of goes back to making an object, but an object that is performative.”

The piece is a 10-foot-tall model of a city. Basically, it fills up a room. There are colored buildings here and there, and dozens of aluminum tracks slop-ing over, under and around them at different levels. An operator steps un-der some tracks, into the middle of the sculpture, and flips a few switches.
Then, the action: 1,200 toy cars slow-ly speed up and then start zooming around on the tracks.
There’s a balcony, so viewers can look down on it from above. The color-ful cars whoosh past so fast that they
make a kind of repetitive pattern. Burden describes the hum of the movement as “white noise ... like a river or a brook or a stream.”
The cars aren’t tethered to anything. They move by a central engine and magnetic pulls, so there’s a possibility of real accidents. The operator in the middle of the piece has to keep a close eye out for problems and can press emergency stops if she has to.
“It’s like the real world. One accident causes more and more, and then, you know, it’s a pileup,” Burden says.
This is the artist’s second major installation for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The first was the now-iconic sculpture Urban Lights, which features rows of antique street lamps looking out on Wilshire Boulevard in front of the museum. Burden feels his more recent works give the museum a little more mass appeal.
“I think all these things help bring maybe a lay public that would not ... be interested in art necessarily,” he says. “I don’t think you need to have an art history background to understand this sculpture.”
There is something just neat about hundreds of little cars zooming around superfast on metal tracks. No art history classes necessary.

A bout 128 million Americans commute to work each day, according to the bureau of labor Statistics. eighty-seven percent of them do so
in some type of automobile, either alone (76 percent) or in a carpool (11 percent). The average commute, one way, is 25.5 minutes. That’s an hour a day simply motoring to and from the office — and that’s an average; 3.5 million people have a one-way commute of more than 90 minutes.
If you’re part of this bumper-to-bumper lunacy, you know how important the car you drive is both in terms of quality of life (comfort, amenities) and financial responsibility (reliability, fuel efficiency). Here are our picks for the 10 best commuter cars. Each fits the commuter mold, but each has slightly different strengths when it comes to taming the road.
chevRoLet voLt | price: $39,145The Volt is not a hybrid, but we understand why people think it is one. A conventional hybrid is a gasoline-powered machine that gets a boost from an electric motor to improve fuel economy. The Volt is an electric car with a gasoline assist. The gas-powered component isn’t part of the drive-train at all, but rather acts as a generator, recharg-ing the Volt’s batteries when necessary. The Volt can drive about 35 miles on an electric charge before the 83-horsepower gasoline engine kicks in. This configuration allows the Volt to roam as far as any other car on the road, something no other electric vehicle can claim. Plus, it is roomy and has all of the right amenities.
fiat 500 | price: $15,500The tiniest roller skate on our list, the Fiat 500, adds a little Italian flair to the morning drive. There are three regular trims — Pop, Sport and Lounge — two convertible offerings and two limited-edition 500s. The all-conquering turbo-charged Abarth performance model will hit the scene in 2012. ScioN iQ | price: $15,995There are all kinds of engineering tricks that ex-plain how the iQ looks small on the outside, yet is relatively big inside. But that’s not why it ap-peals to us in this context; the asymmetrical dash and staggered seating are the standouts here. This arrangement, in which the front passenger sits farther forward in the cabin than the driver, gives three commuters regular, no-compromise room. The iQ’s impressive 37 mpg combined city and highway mileage is the best among the strictly gas-burners on this list.
SuBaRu Legacy | price: $19,995The Legacy is the all-wheel-drive alternative on the list. As part of its 2009 redesign, Subaru’s midsized sedan got a more expansive, ergonomic interior that makes better use of the space. J apanese pitcher Yu Darvish expects to make a smooth transition to the majors next season and the Texas Rangers’ expensive acquisition was
quick to display a subtle sense of humor at his introductory news conference on Friday.
Last month, the Rangers posted a bid in excess of $51 million for exclusive negotiat-ing rights with Darvish and signed him to a reported $60-million, six-year contract on Wednesday as the 30-day window to reach a deal was set to expire.
“I looked at the right-field fence and I thought that was in too close,” Darvish told re-porters of his initial impression of the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, where the confer-ence was held.
“I was asking my general manager if they could move it back. I don’t know where they are on that yet.”

The 25-year-old Darvish has spent his entire seven-season professional career with the Nippon Ham Fighters of Ja-pan’s Nippon Professional Baseball Pacific League.
“I don’t really feel pressure,” Darvish added. “I have no wor-ries. I just look forward to see-ing great pitchers and facing great hitters over here.
“I don’t think I throw as hard as what you all guys say, but I’m confident with a wide variety of my off-speed pitches.”
The strikeout specialist is a two-time Pacific League most valu-able player (MVP), boasts a 96 mph fastball, and completed a 93-38 career record with a 1.99 earned run average in Japan.
“The name of the game is pitching and we picked up a quality pitcher,” Texas manager Ron Washington said.
“It’s special, we brought a special pitcher into the Texas Rangers fold. We haven’t forgot-ten what it takes to succeed. I’m looking forward to getting to Spring Training. I have been enjoying myself this winter, but I’m looking forward to getting there.”
The hard-throwing right-hander helped the Fighters win the 2006 Japan Series and has been the ace of the national team, helping his country to victory at the 2009 World Base-ball Classic and a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The American League champions Rangers have loaded up on Japanese pitching talent with Darvish joining relievers Yoshinori Tateyama and Koji Uehara on the Rangers 40-man roster.
