Micrurus fulvius tenere• Of the many different species of coral snakes,

this is the habitant of the greater Houston area.

• The Texas Coral Snake’s venom contains powerful neurotoxins which ultimately cease cardiac or respiratory function. For this reason, it should never be domesticated.

Ecology

• Inhabits the states of Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. It is also have said to be found in the northern states of Mexico.

• They prefer to live in wooded, marshy, and loose-soiled areas often under debris, leaf litter, logs, or in burrows in the ground.

• Because they live on such a large range of land, they share their habitat with a very wide variety of both plants and animals that are also habitants in the Southeastern U.S.

• Small birds• Frogs

Prey to:• Bigger snakes

• Owls• Hawks• Eagles• Coyotes

Evolution• Its bright colors are meant to

warn and keep predators away.

• When it is threatened, the coral snake will curl up, using its tail in an attempt to confuse the attacker as to which end of the snake is the actual head.

• Babies are born fully venomous

Fun Facts!• Texas Coral Snake is the

only venomous snake in North America to lay eggs.

• Its venom is also the most potent of all the local venomous snakes.

• Range between 20 and 30 inches in length
