Dear TABC Members,

Congratulations to all the State playoff teams and State Champions. It’s a fantastic feeling when your hard work cul-minates in the achievement of your goals. The State Tournaments were very competitive and enjoyable to watch. That is a compliment to both you and your kids. As this basketball season has come to a close, I want to talk about sportsmanship. As an experienced coach, I have seen many changes over my 35 yrs. Sportsmanship and empathy have decreased and the UIL has been forced to empha-size it in their coaches training programs. In my opinion, beating an opponent as badly as possible is just not good sportsmanship. I have heard coaches say, “If you don’t like getting beat bad, train your kids better!” In 35 yrs., I have been on both sides of this dilemma. I see a big distinction between college (recruiting) and high school (lives within boundaries) programs. In high school, you either have talent to work with or you don’t. People, Places and Things Carlesa Dixon of Humble Summer Creek HS (21-6A) had a unique accomplishment this sea-son. She coached her team to a third consecutive regional tournament at three different schools. Her 2016 Dallas Lincoln team was a regional finalist, in 2017 her John Tyler team was a regional semi-finalist for the first time in school history and this past season she guided Summer Creek to their first regional appearance by making the regional final. A long time TABC member Carlesa led her 2013 Dallas Lincoln team to the 4A state championship game bowing to Georgetown 65-61. Keep up the good work Carlesa. Humble boys have made the playoffs for the past 25 years in a row. The streak started when Phil Eaton, now the principal at Magnolia, was coach and continued with Troy Kite, who is now the Hum-ble ISD Athletic Director. David Martinez, who is now head boys coach at Atascocita, kept it going and for the past 6 years Lair Crawford has led the Wildcats. Good job men. Any coaches with simi-lar streaks please let us hear from you. The McDonald's boys High School All-America teams include Quentin Grimes from College Park HS in The Woodlands (Clifton McNeely). In the girls McDonalds's game there were seven Texas girls selected including Sedona Prince of Liberty Hill (Chris Lange), Madison Williams of FW Trinity Val-ley (Tawana Flowers), Charli Collier of Barbers Hill (Tri Danley), Queen Egbo of FB Travis (Tanisha Ellison), Zarielle Green of Duncanville (Cathy Self-Morgan), Catherine Reese of Cy-Woods (Laquisha Dickerson) and NaLyssa Smith of San Antonio East Central (Ian Ward). The McCamey boys of Coach Eddie Walker were picked to finish last in district 6-2A but all that changed when Trajan Johnson moved in from East Texas. He averaged 23 points per game, made 103 treys, had 102 assists and 82 steals. Trajan led his team to the district championship and a berth in the regional tournament for the first time in school history. They lost to the state champs. He has a 3.5 GPA and has accepted a scholarship to play at Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire. Congratulations to Trajan and the rest of the Badgers. The girls at Ropes HS in district 6-1A had a good year behind the arc. The Lady Eagles of Coach Mike McCann made 239 three pointers and Maggie Anderson had 129 by herself. Ropes will be watching the Max Preps leader board to see if anyone else in 1A made more. Don't forget to put your stats on Max preps so your individual and team free throw and three point leaders can be eligi-ble for TABC awards in each class. The past 3 years have been good for the Lipan Indians of Coach Brent Gaylor. They have had a record of 108-5 with the 5 losses to the class 1A state champion Avinger and 4 ranked teams from higher classifications. The Indians have a 34-0 district record, 14-1 playoff record and have won 9 regular season tournaments, 3 regional tournaments and 2 state championships. Add to that Amber Branson's girls state finalists in 2012 and 2015 and a state champion in 2016 and you can see that basketball is serious business. Not bad Lipan.

TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 9

If you are looking for some good off season reading material, Ron Mayberry has written a book called Principles of Successful Coaching by an Old School Coach. This is his fifth book about coaching and basketball taken from experiences and lessons he learned from his 53 years in the profession. A long time TABC member Ron was TABC Coach of the Year on the Junior College level three times and a high school finalist once. To order Ron's book go to www.authorhouse.com.

Celina boys had a banner season winning their first district title since 1974. The Bobcats were 9-1 in district and 21-11 overall. With seven of their top 10 players returning the future looks bright for Bobby Stastny's squad.

Mark your calendars for next year’s state tournaments. Girls - Feb. 28, March 1, 2. Boys - March 7, 8, 9. All games for both UIL state tournaments will return to the San Antonio Alamodome. Order tickets now!
